View Full Version : PS2 Backups Running On PS3 Video
DC RID3R

Take a look at this video showing a PS2 backup running on regular member, gazza14sr's PS3. This current method is confirmed to be working on Firmware 1.10 PS3 and confirmed not working on Firmware 1.31 or above. Please note that this method involves opening up the console and attaching a 3-way switch to the Blu-Ray drive, which will void the PS3s warranty.

Finally made its way here, thats my vid :)
Yes was done awhile back but made the vid for people who were unsure how it works.
The main reason for doing it is because i can now play my backups as well as PAL and US games on my JAP console :D
By the way, this works on all firmware versions. Its swap magic that doesnt. But you do not need swap magic for this method to work. Just an original PS2 game from the region your PS3 is.

This method already existed and has been published also the news on Maxconsole.

Guess the news is not that it can be done but a video showing it being done?

ok, so it works

Upscaling. :p
Upscaling. :p
almost 80% of the ps2 games don't work on the ps3, it's not worth it to rip open a £400 console just to play ps2 games, my ps2 is chipped with component cables, more than enough, you don't even get rumble on the ps3, completely pointless!

Yep, for the people with a UK console it is pretty crap. You get stung an extra £100ish (+/- abit) and can hardly play any PS2 games on it.
I'll never regret the day I imported one.
Hence the reason why this method is excellent for me because a ntsc machine does not play pal Ps2 games. Where as now it does, as well as backups. :D

Yeah i know it's pointless really but the upscaling part was the only reasonable thing that popped in my head. Not everyone has a HDTV at home so some blokes try to use their consoles on their PC monitor OR the games lag like hell on the TVs so using a progressive signal would past right through that limitation.
But if i had the money for a PS3 almost solely for those things i would rather spend a crapload of money on a Micomsoft VGA box. :p

yes it's cool for you because you have a NTSC machine, so no warranty, however someone doing this with a PAL machine will loose their warranty, anything that goes wrong, bam a very expensive paper weight... i hardly play ps2 games on my ps3 anyway, even when i did they didn't load up due to compatibility so i don't bother, i'm happy with component cables and my modded slim ps2.

why a vga box? what positives does it have against a HDTV? if you can splash out on a VGA box you might as well get a HDTV anyway they are getting cheaper now, and btw gazza14sr i have the same TV as you, i have a 32" :P

Er.. i gave those positives out on my last post.
And i was not trying to rebate what you said before that. Does sarcasm ring any bell? :D

Thats another reason too, my ps2 died. I guess its just personal preferance and what peoples circumstances are to do the mod. Also, when Asda is around, there is no such thing as an expensive paper weight, they take anything back, even a ntsc machine ;)

Hehe I did actually think of a 32" but i would of looked silly in my bedroom and wouldnt of been able to focus on the entire screen properly, ony just can with this one lol. Must say it is a good tv though, not had any problems :)

wow, they must be pretty stupid or you are just lucky they will take anything.

trust me, when you see the 32" size the only thing you will focus on is the screen as it's so huge :P and yes it's a very good tv, the sound from the TV speakers is good also, connections are plenty aswell.

To cut a long story short, I bought another US system, it arrived and was f00ked. Bought a pal system from asda but decided I didnt like it but when i returned it i accidently put the wrong machine in the box. Ooop.

Thats what i mean, I wont be able to sit far enough back to get the whole screen in my view. I'd only see 3/4's of the screen at once lol

Original post could do with updating. It is confirmed working up to 1.80. Not tried 1.81 yet.

Thanks gazza14sr for pointing me to this thread. This is exciting news but Im afraid it's a bit out of my league since I'm not tech savvy enough to try soldering anything on my PS3. I'd be happy to have this done, because I want to play my Japanese import version of OutRun2006 Coast to Coast. That, as well as Samurai Spirits Tenka are the only two import games Im interested in playing. I'm hoping someone comes out with a simple mod-chip that allows all region and backup PS2 games to be installed and then played from the PS3's HD. Now THAT would be a breakthrough!!!

Guys has there been any new developments on a PS3 chip? Anything regarding getting the console to play backups or imports, other than that crazy method shown above?
