Nintendo Wii Sales Hit 8 Million Worldwide

According to the latest sales figures, Nintendo's Wii console has surpassed eight million sales worldwide. Latest chart stats report that Microsoft's Xbox 360 is just two million ahead, at ten million sold. The PlayStation 3 has reportedly sold three and a half million units. If the Wii continues to sell at this pace, it won't be too long before the system is crowned the best selling next-gen console, which isn't bad going considering it was released nearly a year later than the Xbox 360. What do you guys think? Are you impressed by the Wii sales figures?

All "next gen" means is that the console is part of the "next" generation of consoles. It has nothing to do with the processing power or graphics capability, though internet fanboys seem to think it does. If you really want to be anal, though, since all three "next gen" machines have launched they should now be called "current gen" consoles.

Also, the winner of this console war will be determined SOLEY on sales. Regardless of what you think of the Wii, video games are a business and that is the only deciding factor.

It wins not based on graphics, processing power or price alone. It is because it appeals to a wide variety of gamers.

Females, Children, Senior Citizens, Parents, 18-30 Male players, etc...

XBox360 appeals to the hardcore 18-30 MALE (US and Europe) crowd that enjoys pretty much just violence. Not women, not kids, not parents, not senior citizens. Maybe with the exception of Viva Pinata... but that's only 1 game. This is why Microsoft themselves realize they need to start taking a different approach.

PS3 appeals to not many at the moment because of the lack of games at the moment. Although if the past serves me right, Sony has ALWAYS appealed to a wider variety of gamers as well.

Wii has 'last gen' graphics, the Xbox360 has 'last gen' storage and controllers, the PS3 has 'last gen' video card (and controllers - still no rumble etc.)

actually the 360 has recently broke the 11 million sold marker. I dont think nintendo will surpass the 360 in 07'...but I'm sure it will in 08'.

The 360 has sold slightly over 1 million since the wiis release. That is over 1 million in 6 months! The sales in europe have died and its basically just america its selling now.

The PS3 was the BIGGEST mistake sony have ever made, they built their current standing on appealing to a mass market, reasonably priced, powerful and attractive hardware. they have single handedly given that market to nintendo with the stupidly high priced "bluray player that plays games" ploy.

The last few generations it was cool to own playstation (and not nintendo), they even launched branded clothing with the PS1 which was a very bold move, today it seems more cool to hate sony, im sure the appeal of that PSX beanie hat is non existant this time around ;)

I reciently watched an mtv cribs and some rapper was showing you around his house, when he came to the TV he proudly pointed out his Wii, 5 years ago, without a doubt would have been a playstation.

Sony foolishly ignored Nintendo and focussed on keeping the 'trendy' market that MS were trying to take and its done neither of them any good.The numbers speak for themselves.
Its now upto MS and Sony to fight for the 18 - 30 yr old gamers, shame MS has already attracted 10 million of them before sony even entered the market.

Having said that, i dont think the impact of their mistakes is really showing with the current sales figures, sure the PS3 is way behnd the wii, but thats only becasue the wii is selling such an unusually high amount at this time of the year. The sales of the PS3 are comparable to those of the PS2 and are double the sales of the PS1 at the same point in thier life cycle.

News like this should focus on the incredible sales of the wii, not the difference in numbers between other consoles, its not really fair to say the others are selling badly because they are not at all. Mite stop a few fanboy tears too ;)

why are people so surprised that the system with the least graphical capabilities win? look at the ps1/ps2 era, they were cheaper to dev. for so studios flocked to sony. couple that with easy moddin and you got yourself a winner. plus with wiis wide market(everyone) compared to xbox360/ps3(males 14-30), i wouldnt be surprised if they reached sony-like numbers.

The Wii will easily surpass the 360 (in sales) by the end of 2007. With more than six months left in the year I don't see how anyone could think otherwise. Come Christmas time I see them being in even shorter supply than they are now. Nintendo will have no problem selling every one they make.

Nextgengames is made up. Its based on an algorythm and is completely inaccurate. VGCharts however is pretty close to the real thing. Especially America & Japan sales numbers. They update their charts reflect those presented in the NPD sales data. Europe is sometimes tough to tell along with other areas since data isn't always released from their but the number is still about as close as you can get.

Here is a list of the last 6 generations with the console that had the best sales vs. the most powerful

Atari 2600 vs. Intellivision
ColecoVision vs. Atari 5200
NES vs. Master system
SNES vs. Neo Geo
Playstation vs. N64
PS2 vs. xbox

Trying to make the most powerful console has never worked out. There are just not enough people willing to pay large premiums to get the best.

If the PS3 or the 360 were sold at comparable prices then I don't think too many people would even look at the Wii. its good to see that people are noticing the fact that the 360 sales have slowed right down, this seems to be a point that is constantly ignored. people that think the Wii will not outsell the X360 in this calander year, are kidding themselves.
To be fair, the ps3 sales are also low, and you could put this down to no new games and a traditionally low period in the year (that comment includes X360).

But the Wii is certainly bucking the trend. it seems to be unstoppable at the moment, and everyone will have to admit that Nintendo have certainly found a sweet spot, wether you class it as next-gen or not :eek:

maybe more & more people are now hearing of the dreaded 3rod from the xbox360 & dont want to spend £200 on a console that is only likely to last upto 15month,Mine has got the 3rod it lasted 13month warranty is out of date,so what am i supposed to do go out & buy another only for my new one to last just enough the the warranty to run out,what really annoys me is M$ total denial that it is a problem & there has been no statement s that they have addressed the problems,so all the consoles on the shelves at the moment are manufactured the same way that all the ones that receive the 3rod are,this what puts me off wasting another £200 to put in M$ pockets,I may just try & hold out for the PS3 to lower its price then may jump for one of these instead only thing that bugs me with the PS3 is there is no headset support for online gaming is threre (i may be wrong) Although at £400 its just to expensive for me at the the moment & the Wii doesnt appeal to me ,

No the shipped figure is about 6m at the moment.

I still have to be convinced myslef that the wii will continue to sell the way it is as I see some using it as a stop gap to a ps3 and also alot of non gamers buying as a fad. The line-up of games certainly doesn't inspire sales though seeing the virtual console download figures maybe thats pushing sales as much. Maybe it will continue to grow sales but also just as likely to burn out once ps3 and 360 are more competative on price.

Newsflash --- The reason its sold so many machines is its a gateway for people like yourself that obviously dont have a past in gaming or an interest in technology.
