View Full Version : The Spring Update Works Fine With Hacked Drives
fredimaster

Basically if your 360 worked with backups online before the update its gonna work afterwards, there doesn't seem to be any new security at all
(beware though m$ have banned people in the past months after new updates that discover hacked fw, though that is normally a hacked dashboard that allows homebrew, the frive hack is different from that and harder to detect)
i have used the update myself and i have extreme 5.2, tpepsiman has used it with hitachi stealth 2.3 and other friends of mine have also confirmed the newer extreme

Seems alright on mine too, I only went on to see if my Backups worked after downloading the update, but my brother decided that h'ed go on Xbox live haha.
I hope they haven't implemented anything so bans are delayed. :(

I think you guys make mistakes
the new protection will be implemented in newer titles
and of course the update surely take care of it but the protection will
have to be also on the DVD !
and that time maybe it will not boot or maybe will not be able to go online
so i think it's useless to check older titles ...
just my two cents ...

sure but are XBL fans okay to update? Xbox1 Live bans took 24 hrs. So it might be a little premature to say its okay okay today.

this is untrue, the burned games read differently which is what thespecialist said right after c4eva released the first hack. if ms wanted to detect or prevent the games from running there would be a number of ways to do it and supposedly one of the ways was supposed to be implemented in the spring update. if a game was going to be blocked then they would have been, if a new game has new protection then thats just the result of new protection just like ps2 games got new protection which prevented swap magic from working or older modchips from working.

its possible sure but with the huge library out now it would have been in ms best interest to try and protect those releases as well not to just move forward with hopes that the protection will work

I quote a post from another location, It is up to you if you trust it or not.
Your Drive: Samsung ms28
Firmware Your Using: 5.2
Pre-Update Playing: TMNT
Post-Update Playing: TMNT
TMNT will not play after update i did play fine befor update most of my other games work fine tryed TMNT on my other console with same firmware but has bnot been updated works like a charm
PS: message after update when i play game is Dirty disk error
BulletMag

TMNT working fine post update for me ! (i have updated to 5.3 FW too)

05-09-2007, 09:10 AM
^ Perhaps M/S should make their error codes clearer. Instead of Dirty disc error they should try.... Your box had been hacked.... or the more obvious..... you're using cheap Sh!t DVD+D/L In all fairness I think the 2nd option is the most obvious. If M/S were going to block a game, the rather lackluster (to put it politely) TMNT would be the last game they'd protect.

This scene is funny..
A few days ago ppl were asking for proof the new C4E firmware solved the new checks.. Now they ask for proof that you won't be banned within a week..
Everyone here knows the risks, that's why we have ppl like ash2006 doing their own testing so that others know what to expect. Until then any "argumentative demand" asking for proof should be seen as F.U.D., but this isn't something XBOX360 owners need me to tell them about..

ms isn't going to cripple microtransactions for booting pirated games that would make them lose money for games and live content. i dont see live bans happening unless you found a way to cheat online

For M$ to use the new protection, they need to ask from the Live server,
to test the disc while you are playing it only when signed into a Live game,
because of this they may or may not check all the time, and may or may not
have turned on the update on their side (Server upgrade).
Two things are going to happen, one they are going to take down Live for
a few hours to upgrade the server, then you need to worry about today's
update, and second they are only going to use this feature on hot titles
like checking your CRACKDOWN disc when trying to sign into Halo 3 BETA.
(Oh, and Hitachi update finished, tested, releasing within 24 hours or less).

TS-H943 here with 5.3.
No problems whatsoever playing and connecting to Live using
both originals and backups.
MP4 playback is great; it even fluidly plays the x264 One Piece
episodes that were choppy on XBMC.
I don't know if it was there before, but there's a "Reference
Levels" option under the display properties. I can see no
noticable difference while trying the three available options
in the 1920 x 1080 setting using the VGA HD AV cable.
Google didn't help either. Does anyone here know if
it was present in previous updates and what it does exactly?

I'm confused, I'm guessing there is no way around MS checking the discs through Live, or is the new firmware with the added protection supposed to make it harder for them?First you need to understand what the firmware hack is really doing.. In simple and very accurate terms is telling the XBOX360 the disc you have just inserted is a pressed original. It isn't doing anything more than that, that's why you can't run unsigned code with this hack.
Firmware hackers evolved their firmware to a stage in which Microsoft couldn't just check from the drive itself if the firmware was modified and flashing a new firmware through a live update, despite being risky, would just be a temporary fix. So they are playing it smart, instead of goose chasing the drives they are using the unique properties of pressed discs vs burned discs.
A burned disc is in several ways different from a pressed disc. What this new firmwares are doing is emulating those unique differences in order to keep luring Microsoft into thinking a pressed original is on the tray.
Currently we are in the times of "Jitter", that is basically the "noise" carried in data from reading the disc. This can be seen as a fingerprint of the disc.
What the latest C4E firmware does is ensure the "Jitter" levels are reported within the pressed disc range. This is a smart solution that may probably just do the trick, unless Microsoft starts producing their discs with intentional surface defects. When and *IF* something in those lines happens, you can expect a new patch in the same way as SS.

The banhammer doesn't need to take immediate effect. The server could invoke a command after teh read and then initiate the ban.

i don't think they would wait, why wait? at the end of the day, the xbox sales are going to sky rocket with the likes of forza and halo 3 coming out, I think they don't mind the firmware hacks at the moment, as the games aren't really hackable and no unsigned code like trainers etc are being used.
Xbox sales would of gone up a lot on the fact that the xbox is now hackable, which means more money for MS and also they are trying to fight the PS3 and the Wii. MS could take the gamble and block everyone that has custom firmware but that would mean a slump in sales, which in affect could mean PS3 then win or even the Wii.
The other factor to take in account is that the firmware hack is to allow back uped games to work, meaning you have the original, MS don't mind that nor do games companies as it means that people can play their games longer. If back ups are fine, and non back ups aren't how could MS prove that you don't own the original.
Just my thoughts on it anyways, I don't think MS would do it for the sales and the race to for top dog on the console battle.

Glad to read an intelligent and informational post, thanks! I don't think M$ will start to ban. They have too much to lose with almost 10mil consoles sold, and only a smalll fraction have the drive FW modded. Plus this with the Mod, spend a lot on MS points, like me, so why ban a paying customer?

So I was just wondering if for any reason I decided to update to the spring firmware update would I later still be able to hack the firmeware with xtreme53. I know this is probably not that important of a question but it is important to me. Thanks in advance.
The reason I want to know is because i've finally created an xboxlive account mainly so that I can download game demos but it is saying that there are none available. (the ethernet is plugged in and everything) So that is why I was wondering if it would be okay to update right now as I don't have the VIA chipset or the SATA cable to hack the firmware as of yet.
are you sure you arent just looking under new releases? there are none right now :)
GaryOPA, glad to see you posting, had lost hope after we hadnt seen an xtreme5 release. I look forward to reading the release notes :)

people will always copy games MS obviosly know this. So the question they should ask it do we want some money or no money. 6 quid for gears map 40 quid subscription. Thats without xbox live arcade titles and youve got 46 quid a year. People will also buy more than one thing from live. So this could easily shoot up. Better than nothing lol.
edit: oh and as a percentage of people with modded consoles id say its not that large compared to 10 million units out there lol. And ms games per console sold is extremely high.

You should check the network settings in the XBOX360 dash (there is a nice troubleshooter that can help you).
Also XBOX360's return an error code sequence, please post that sequence here. [Most important are Y and Z codes]
If anything it is your network port to blame, a live account fake personal information or a report for cheating from a disgruntled gamer.. Unofficially copying Marketplace or Arcade items amongst other harddrives is also know to cause a ban.. [This isn't the 50%-off content sharing trick officially supported by live, or the 120GB Transfer cable..]

z:0000 - 0000Those are the values of any stock XBOX360, so your console isn't banned from Live or in queue for analysis..
It is a settings fault somewhere along the way, otherwise you wouldn't get everything ok until connecting to Live using the troubleshoot wizard.. [Network port is working]

E65 either means wrong firmware or wrong key. Make the firmware again ensuring the key is present. Did you restore first?

If all else fails and you have an orig.bin then yes you can buy a new drive. Can you get the drive into modeb using slax?

if you would have read the first post you'd know that was the irmware i originally reported as working fine, infact all hacked firmwares that worked before this update still work fine

ok, as far as i can tell, the spring update seems to be all well and good with hitatchi owners, but i'm staying clear until i have the new firmware hack for it. i cannot find any links to this fw. could someone please point me in the right direction? gotta get back on live, so far avoiding the update through paranoia.
thanks.

Asking for or posting links for Firmware is forbidden. You have to find it yourself through the "usual" places. Sorry, but if you found it before, I am sure you can locate one again...

little late to the party, but I upgraded my firmware with C4EVA and it is working fine. I still haven't applied the spring update, gonna wait a bit longer to see if any problems.

Thanks for the kind reply!?! I did read the entire post, and what I wanted to know is whether the MS25 SAMSUNG in particular was ok, bearing in mind that I do not have a clue whether it being MS25/MS28 would make any difference or not! but thats why i put sammy "ms25", not just samsung drive there is no mention in the first post whether its ms28/25

If you get banned from live, is it the gaming side only or would the banning include downloading demos, game patches etc.
my drive aint flashed but plan to do it once the warranty runs out.
