i have a hitachi and my xbox just wanted to update but that was a bad thing right? so i hope this new firmware is out soon

update your dashboard, the older firmware has been confirmed to work with the new dashboard.

i.e you'll still be able to play backups online & off

is it normal that i can't connect on xblive until i did the update

yes it is, it won't let allow you to get on live until your updated so everyone has the same version online.

Could it be that they are doing this in two stages?

Stage 1 - release the update and make sure it doesn't trash people's machines like the last update did

Stage 2 - weeks or months later - activate the banning mode.

If the update caused problems today, they couldn't be certain that it was just because of flashed drives as it might affect other too like the last update did. This way, if they leave it a few weeks to turn on, they can be sure.
