It sure looks interesting! I'm curious what they'll get done with this new knowledge.

And it might also be the start to fixing the 'bricked' Wii's out there...

Even it they did manage to dump it they don't say if the flash is encrypted or not.

Yeah i just saw so i deleted my post.
It's a good news if it can show some flaws of the wii firmware and for the understanding of the wii itself.

I hope we can expect cracking the virtual console encryption with the help of this.

nice! i hope this will lead to BIOS replacement mods like viper and qoob, just with more support this time around. ;)

isn't the NAND flash where the firmware etc is installed? it could be very useful

no, nand flash is the 512MB where VC games, and save games are stored..

So far every mod has been attacking the DVD drive. This dump was needed so that people could look to make a real mod chip which could provide much more then what the current chips provide. This might with time provide ways to run unsigned code, copy virtual console games, and in the long term maybe even provide a full OS change.

Long term this could be huge but its going to take time. Although with the system being so close to the Gamecube it might be easier then other consoles.

no, nand flash is the 512MB where VC games, and save games are stored..
If that is indeed true, would it be theoretically possible to create custom flashes that already have VC games loaded onto them?

Would this in any way be a step closer to be un-bricking my dead wii?

My wii died in accidental flipping of the toggle for cyclowiz update and left my wii unbootable. I think the software on there was wiped and if i could re flash it on there maybe it would revive.

HELP!

i'm almost positive it holds the firmware as well. it's the only writable chip on the board. where else would the firmware be kept?

YEa the firmware is in there. Nand flash is the core of the wii.

Wii Homebrews in a near future? Just the time will tell to us, but this will be amazing, N64 emulators can be real using the power of Wii hardware, or better then this, running Linux or other OSs on Wii, nice really nice, at the moment wii can just dream ...

I am trying to unbrick a super paper mario updated PAL wii, still no luck.

Here is some videos of our work...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgQ6qR26Eyk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLLsqV5gKNI

One problem is that our programmer complain about pin#36 on all chips we have tried to read.

Maybe my new programmer is bad...have anyone else tried to read the tsop like this?

ok, well i cant see your videos, windows vistas refuses to let me.
But i think it will be more of a case of just copying the nand from a working to another.
interesting though, anyone know where i can get an adaptor cheap for these chips. and what programmer are you using?

finally watched the videos, what is the hynix chips details, and what package type / pin number, so i can get hold of an adaptor for it.

cheers

hey im fairly new to the whole modding/hacking deal, so i only partially understand this. from what i can gather, someone found a way to connect to the core of the wii (what does nand stand for?) and by doing so is closer to cracking the firmware and opening possibilities to run third party programs or os on the wii. wouldnt that also enable you to put the wii's os on your comp and run it as an emulator? like i said im new and i realize i know nothing, so explaining is appreciated.

well im assuming so, im not all in the know when it comes to this aspect of the wii but making an emulator the basic principal is you need a PC 4x the speed of the console for it to work perfectly and take into mind there are some GC emulators out there but they are hella slow and are not compatible with all games and i think they are only loaded by ISO's so you cant stick the disk in and play like the old PSX emulators. however if the bios has been dumped then dumped then yes it is the 1st step towards an emulator since most emulators like the GBA one on the PSP just runs the GBA bios for perfect emulation. Im interested to see if they can reflash the Wii with modified codes possibly taking away this unique VC code we have so all the downloaded VC games can be played and then once thats done they find away to download custom channels, install different OS (Linux, OSX, XP)

probably ever going to happen but i can still dream:rolleyes:

Nand stands for: Not And (electronic logic gate)

and nand's definition is: a type of flash memory commonly used for mass storage application like digital cameras and MP3 players. NAND is a serial memory cell that has 1 less contact per pair of cells than NOR memory making NAND less expensive to produce. :)
