View Full Version : Just replaced lid on GC and now won't read any discs

I'm just starting out on the modding road. I haven't made any alterations to the software/firmware - I'm still waiting for my Gecko to arrive.
In the meantime I got hold of a replacement lid in order to be able to use full-size discs and have just fitted it, using the melted Bic pen technique to remove the screws.
Now it's back together but when I turn the GC on it doesn't read the genuine games I have - the drive doesn't even bother to start spinning. When I choose Gameplay in the Dash it asks me to insert a Gamecube Disc, but when I do nothing happens either.
Now obviously I turned my GC upside down a few times whilst experimenting with my homemade screwdriver, but it's not like I dropped it or bashed it about, so I can't believe I've bust it.
Has this happened to anybody else? Can anybody advise me as to what to do?
PS I have only replaced the lid - not the entire case, I it's not like I've had all the components scattered about - just took the lid off and put the replacement on - what's going on?

Check the lid-switch is connecting. It may be that the little button/switch thing isn't being pressed in, which means the GC thinks the lid is still open, and won't try to read the disc.
Oh, and to answer your question about discs from the GCOS forum, I only use Riteks. I tried tons of different minis, but none of them worked (well, one type did, but after a day or so, it stopped reading the discs). I eventually go ahold of a tub of Ritek G04 minis, and they worked really good, but were far more expensive than full-sized discs and a pain in the arse to source (twice I had places send me different discs, as they found they couldn't source them after I ordered).
So I switched to full-size Riteks (G05), easy to find (£15 for 100 at a shop down the road from me) and never looked back.

The ever-dependable Creamstick, cheers for that. Off the top of my head I can't say I know which bit is the lid switch, but I guess it must be pretty obvious if you're looking for it. I'll check it out in a minute. The replacement lid fits well enough, and looks ok, but the buttons and springs were nowhere near as good the original ones, so I wouldn't be surprised if the lid-switch feature wasn't quite up to scratch either.
And thanks for the reply about the discs.

Well, life sure as hell ain't easy as a noob.
As a noob you never want to ask more than the absolute essentials, but it can leave you prone to easily avoidable errors.
I'd seen loads of references to replacing the lid. Get a Bic pen, melt it, unscrew the four screws, swap the lids - bish bash bosh.
What I hadn't seen anywhere was that when you are replacing the lid, the new lid should be positioned with the lid open. Because I didn't do this I've snapped off one of the two lid switches, and both of them need to be released in order for the drive to spin, hence my disc read problems.
Fortunately, thanks to Creamstick, I found out that the lid switch existed (having never opened the lid during gameplay I just hadn't been aware it was there) and was able to take a closer look.
Fortunately, just by depressing the metal strip beneath where one of the plastic switches had previously been located, it makes this half of the switch permanently stay in the lid-down position. And with the new lid repositioned with the lid open everything seems to be working A.OK.
Thanks Creamstick.
Now I'm just waiting patiently for my Gecko before the fun can begin :)

No problem! I usually only check in here every so often, as there anren't usually many posts. I try to help people with problems I've encountered myself :)
