Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 8 Mbps, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.

I think this means they are really adding xvid support :)

I don't think so because they said it's mostly used for pirated movies. We gonna see it

Did you read the article? The original quote I posted is from the release notes.

Yea but Mpeg-4 support doesn't mean Xvid/DivX support.

if its not divx/xvid, then it is either quicktime, or some ms ripoff of divx integrated into the wmv format.
It could actually be divx, but we will unfortunatley have to wait and see.

Haha funny that you say that as divx is actually a ripoff of a MS codec from long ago...

well its harder to be considered a rip off when you take a failure and make it something good.

that was kinda of an MS attempt at drm (though different) and was trying to compete with dvd players. wrong place for the thing. now divx is far beyond what MS had invented and no where near what it its invisioned use was.

Are you talking about the failed divx dvd players? That is not the history of divx that I am referring to at all. A simple google search brings up this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divx) from Wikipedia.

Here is a qute from the page:

DivX ;-) 3.11 Alpha and later 3.xx versions refers to a hacked version of the Microsoft MPEG-4 Version 3 video codec (which was actually not MPEG-4 compliant), extracted around 1998 by French hacker Jérome Rota (also known as Gej). The Microsoft codec, which originally required that the compressed output be put in an ASF file, was altered to allow other containers such as AVI. Rota hacked the Microsoft codec because newer versions of the Windows Media Player wouldn't play his video portfolio and résumé that were encoded with it. Instead of re-encoding his portfolio, Rota and German hacker Max Morice [1] decided to reverse engineer the codec, which "took about a week". [2]

actually, im confused now, MS didnt make divx, the divx dvd thing was circuit city I guess. the name divx ws just a joke about that failed format. and the mpeg-4 codec of ms's they hacked wasnt nothing to do with the original divx I guess. its really wierd. anyone can clear that up, please do.

so yeah it was just a hex edited format to start, but now it contains no ms code. crazy stuff. I do remeber the orginal divx players though, so this has always confused me.

either way divx is a success, what ms made was not. and I guess now it is much more advanced than what ms made.

I was definatley wrong in my understanding at first. I wont even try to argue that.

i was reading this page wrong

http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=24098&lastnode_id=0

no wonder ms is so touchy about putting a divx codec on the 360 lol

srry for jumping the gun earlier.

I dont actually know anything about codecs, so im just gonna shut up now.:o

I love that my DVD player can play Divx/Xvid. I burn Data DVDs all the time and play multiple movies from them. It would be nice if the Xbox could stream them from my PC, so I can save some disks (and the planet ;))....

Divx is based upon MPEG-4 Part 2.

H.264 support is also going to be added aswell.

Full features list (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2007/0408-im.htm)

Both only support 2 channel AAC, which means most downloaded videos won't work. Atleast not with audio.

I was going to never update my dash again, but if the 360 is going to do "xvid with ac3" then i will, if not for get it.

The ultimate upgrade

- The console will block the user who attempts to download content onto a storage device that will never have the capacity to store the item without deducting any points associated with the content item.
You gotta love it when you don't have to pay for stuff you can't possibly get. I'm surprised I don't see something else equally funny like "- security updates" in there.

mpeg-4 support is a bit unclear ATM. also is limited 2 channel, 5mbps and so on... PS3 has mpeg-4 support... so it doesn't play xvid/divx only mp4 and i think mov format crap.... really confusing:confused:

if they don't fix the firmware hack by this update they'll never will :D

oh not really interested on the "text" messenger crap ATM... give me web browser  though that keyboard design is nice
