I previously tried 'the towel fix' for my xbox 360 and it only repaired the console for a couple of hours - however I have now tried a different solution involving a RUBBER (Or Eraser for the US :D ) and its now worked for a couple of days going swell. People are reporting its worked for months. Heres the link I followed to get information on the fix:

I highly recommend it if you have no warranty left. Oh and its invented by a brazilian guy....Thanks Chiaroscuro!

It's working after this small mod. Let's hope it doesn't affect the ram

This worked perfect, had 2 x360 with 3 red lights and tried this, turned on for about 12 minutes to heat it up. Turned it off and back on again and worked on both units. Will repost if i can after i use them for awhile.

i used my girlfriends nail glue not too strong can be removed and the 360 has been working non stop since yesterday and i mean nonstop playing, looks like the rubber trick is the best fix around

I used normal glue...It's working for 3 weeks now, without any freezing or breakdown.

I would suggest replacing the eraser pads.
Reason I say this is because with the pressure being placed on the pad after a while they will tend to keep the size they are at and no longer provide resistance (pressure) due to the heat.
so replacing the pads should give you the pressure back that is being exerted on the ram chips.
(I think I said that wrong but you get what I'm trying to say)
after 3 weeks = no more pressure
new pads = get pressure back
