View Full Version : Wii Dual Layer Discs?

Was just wondering how probable it is that Wii games might go dual layer in a year or so. Is it a concern, or do the games take up such little space that it really wont be an issue?
Further, would the mod chips be able to support dual layer DVD-R's?
I would really like to hear some thoughts. ;)

I don't think that it will happen anytime soon. Look at Zelda TP. It's just about 1GB.
But since the modchips just tell the drive, that the inserted DVD is an original (ok a few other things, but that's the main part) there shouldn't be a problem.

Probably not... more likely to have multiple DVDs

I don't think so. If a game really exceeds the DVD-5-limit they will bring it rather on a DVD-9 than two DVD-5s.

humm, i don't think they will be moving to dvd dual layer, why? well look at the xbox360, they have hidef games running on dual layers, the wii is running 480p maximum and they're on dvd5's. I don't think nintendo will have dual layers, maybe they will have 2 disc games like the gamecube, but i don't think any dual layer games.

The resolution the game runs in wouldn't make that much of a difference (if at all) to the amount of space it takes up on a disc. It's all about making the best use of what you have available through the use of compression, etc.

And the ps3 15gb really means- "We padded it out to make it load faster and our compression guy is passed out in cabo"

this is as foolish as saying the gamecube would require dual layer discs.
wii is nothing more than an updated gamecube. all that changes is the fact that they are not constrained to compressing video. resident evil 4 was 3 GIGS for both discs ... I don't see any wii games exceeding the size of 4 GIGS

I beleive almost any dvd player on consoles/pc's made in past 8-10 years have all have ability to read DL as movie DVD's are DL, to make a drive only read single layer DVD's may cost more $ now as not the standard.
The Wii could be capable, but seeing as no Built in DVD capability looks unlikely.
To speculate, you could try making a GC homebrew disc with content over 6 GB's and see if Wii reads the disc and runs programs.

@cravavr3
What are you talking about. Wii is capeable of reading DL-discs. Nintendo states so in the official specs.
The only thing we are talking about here is if we will really see a DL disc.
And I say defenitely. The latest would be when square comes along with a game that has tons of FMVs in it.

Does anybody know where to find a list of NTSC-US games that run in 480p vs. ones that don't?
I don't think that it will happen anytime soon. Look at Zelda TP. It's just about 1GB.
Not sure what that has to do with anything, it also doesn't even have voice acting or CGI's of any kind.
