View Full Version : Wii are the champions?
Reuters has taken another look at the early success of the Wii but remind us to be a little open minded when it comes to declaring a 'winner' in the console wars. The Xbox has the highest games attachment rate out of all the consoles and Reuters summarise that at this point the Wii has EVERYTHING to LOSE.
Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 is taking strong lead in the number of games sold. The Xbox 360 has six titles in the top 10 for February -- including the No. 1 title -- while Wii has three and PS3 none (PS2 title "Guitar Hero" took the final spot). Additionally, Xbox 360 owners buy far more games than the owners of other consoles at a rate of 5.4 games per 360 owner. That rate falls to 2.3 for the PS3 and 2.8 for the Wii.
That leaves the Wii, for now, with everything to lose.
"Their challenge going forward is to make sure this is not a passing fad by getting a stream of content into the market," Gartenberg says. "The game console purchase driver is still going to be first and foremost games. The secondary stuff is the icing on the cake."

360 has double the userbase, longer console life by like 10x as long, people are busy enjoying what they have. Why don't you try to compare the 5 month span the Wii has had so far to the 360 five month span? Wouldn't that make more sense?

still way too early to declare a winner in this round.
oh, and anyone with half a brain would know that with the 360 being out for much longer than the other two it would have more games per owner. hardly earth-shattering or unexpected news.

Still.. a headstart is a tangible advantage. To say the Wii is still young is certainly valid...but the 360 got where it was without worrying about the same kind of competition. The Wii has more work cut out for it.
I wish Nintendo (and Sony) would follow MS's lead and make dev kits available for users. That is one aspect of MS that I think is ingenious. That's probably a particularly American point of view: harnessing the user community. Id Software was VERY aware of it, Valve is arguably more aware of it (in terms of the revenue it can generate for Valve). Gabe Newell = ex-MS lackey...so I'm sure his influence was felt in the Xbox division..
The Japanese clearly have problems with empowering their communities (look at the Sony PSP homebrew scene).

I think the point this guy's article is trying to make is that games are what make money. The Wii and DS don't sell games, only the 360 and PS2 does. So that means that Nintendo isn't making any money... they are just selling tons of consoles. Thats why Nintendo will probably end up like sega and only make games.

I didn't know it was crap. That's a shame. Somebody needs to take the idea and do it right, then. You'd think the PS3 would be a ripe platform for it, since Sony actually supports Linux on it.

Well actually nintendo do make money on consoles, so they are not gonna stop making consoles anytime soon. Even if the game attach ration isn't that big for nintendo they won't stop making consoles because they are making bucket loads of cash with the wii and ds lite. Sony however are in the opposite postion, they are relying to sales of official accessories and games to rake in profits until manufacturing costs decline to a point wheere the console makes a profit.

They only support it to a limit. Unlike Linux on the PC or Xbox (1), it's headed by a company that doesn't want you doing what they don't want you to. Just like with the PSP, they've made a ton of FW updates just to try and keep people from playing backups and homebrew. They SHOULD be praising the people who hacked it but I guess no company would do that.

Exactly, Nintendo does not sell consoles at a loss like everyone else does that's why Nintendo is constantly one of the most profitable games companies around although they're not always selling the most units. Game sales are a bit of a problem since Nintendo games generally sell well but 3rd party games don't do as well as they should be but that could very well change this round. It's still very early.

i think it is a little early to declare a winner especially when the ps3 and wii have yet to pull out big gunner titles.
BUT i can see how many people would already consider the wii as winner not only with UNREAL recent sales but with the ds also dominating the charts it's hard to overlook at the numbers between those 2.

It is too soon still, the results, can be seen only at the end, or at least in one year!.

I would consider Zelda: twilight princess a "big gunner title"... wouldn't you?

Wii aren't the only ones in love with Nintendo's console... Worldwide sales prove it too.
as of March 27, 2007.... read this!

Your point looks a little contradictory... am I understanding wrong or what?... Wii and DS don't sell games? Just consoles, and they should turn like Sega and sell just games??? WTF..if they don't sell games how could this be usefull then?
Actually people buy games for DS and Wii, and DOWNLOAD tons of games for PS2 :-)... Nintendo Sells a lot of games, believed or not..
Just go and look the charts.

This is bs, this is such an ignorant statement. It's quite obvious you can develop whatever the **** you want on a PC, but have you ever been able to do so legally and supported on a console (and not counting NetYaroze, which while it was nice it was not accessible and very limited)? And it's not a game engine or an editor, it's a framework, but I don't expect you to know the difference. XNA is a incredible opportunity for EVERY video game development enthusiast or hobbyist. The tools are actually free on the PC and you only need to pay to be able to transfer it to the 360, and if you can't even afford to pay for that then you're probably not committed enough to develop anything in the first place. If you put down XNA you're either ignorant or have never cared much about video game development.
