Woah $250? Damn that's a good deal I think. You can't find them for that price even used! What's the number? I think I may pick up one of these bad boys, now that Qoob supports it! Just curious though, I shouldn't need anything else besides Qoob and a BBA if I were to get the Panasonic Q? W/ the Qoob and new Bios I should be able to play any region game (NTSC) and DVDs and also my backups? Just like a normal GCN, minus the small cover though. ;)

Yeah, I tried the ones that I made for my Viper( made with Loonycubes multiboot iso creator), and they seem to be working just as good as they do on the Viper(perfectly:) )

I was told you can just put the isos on a disc and they will boot and you don't have to make a multi-image image.
As for the # for panasonic you might try www.panasonic.com ... heh

In the NFO file, it says that you can do that, but that the audio fix doesn't work, and I think it also said something about alignment issues.
You are correct. It did suggest not to do that.
Can you post a link to Loonycubes disc creator?

So would a Panasonic Q allow you to fill up an entire DVD with games since its laser goes all the way to the end of the disc? That would be so cool cuz you could fit like both discs of RE4 and even one or two other games all on one DVD. I'm so glad i choose Qoob over Viper :D .
thanks again man you rock.
now one last dumb question.
do i have to strip the garbage data out before using this or will it do it on the fly?
Xboxmodder999
04-27-2005, 12:07 AM
On the fly:) It will also tell you the size of what the iso is going to be after being wiped.

No as I believe the PQ has two seperate lasers, but hopefully I am wrong.
Remember the PQ is a DVD player so it can read DVD9 discs. That means 9.5 gigs of ISO's if it does read them!

Yeah, I think the Q has 2 lasers, one for the dvd player, and another for GC games. Just like a dvd/cd drive has two lasers, one for the Cd's and one for the DVD's.

The panasonic does have separate lasers so you can't play games with a full-size disc. What's so special about the panasonic that makes everybody wants it even though it's so damn expensive? It just seems like a cube with a dvd player to me.

How well do multigame discs work? The same as if I only had one game on the disc? Or more dres?
From what I have gathered based on my experience there is no more or less DRE's with the multigame discs. It all depends on the media you are using. Buy good media and turn your buffer underrun protection off and make sure you finalize your discs when you burn and you should have very few DRE's.
I created about 5 Multigame Discs last night and none of them gave me any DRE's. I had one that had an issue reading a certain section but eventually it got past it in about 15 seconds or so.
There is no substitute for good media.
crumpster
04-27-2005, 12:56 PM
I agree to use good media. Ritek G04 (ridata branded) work best for my cube/xbox. I burn at 2x and finalize disc and I have *never* experienced a DRE so far.

Hi, I've been reading about qoob chip for a while now and just one quick question... since qoob bios 1.2 is released with panasonic q support is it good idea to get one? i have read that pansonic has two separate lens for games and dvd... does this mean i can only use mini-dvds or big ones as well as long as i dont go over 1.4(?) gb? (like how ppl play with regular cube with their top off)
Also, is it hard to install?(or can i at least find some tutorial for installing chip to panasonic q) I dont know how solder so I would have to go to local electrical shop to solder (i am in korea btw... not many ppl know how to mod gc)
thanx

It's not just media, it is also your burner. The burner that you use can cause more problems then the media.
is there any threads or pages we can read up on of burners that are good or bad for burnin GC games?

kyu81, I was in the same situation as you were about not being able to solder. You know what I did, I went to radioshack and bought a 15-watt soldering iron and some rosin-core solder for around $10 bux total. I went home and got an old video card and some wires and started practicing. After a while you just get the hang of it. Team Xecuter uses the following tutorial on their website. http://www.epemag.com/solderfaq/pictures.htm
You can learn it, its' not that hard. To install the chip its not that bad either. Just take your time . Hope this helps
Btw, you can check out my review to see the soldering points for a ntsc cube.

hey thanx for helping me out i will definitely try that... now i just have to know whether i can use full size dvd(upto 1.4gb) or just mini dvds... (i would assume i could use full size dvd but i am not sure whether full-sized dvd mentioned in prior posts meant full physical size wise or capacity wise)
crumpster
04-27-2005, 01:30 PM
Yes you can use full-sized disc except the GC can only read the first 1.4 GB of the disc. You also need to leave the cover off in order to play full-sized disc. You can buy replacement cases tho that allow full-sized disc to fit.

I'm not exactly sure what burners are bad, but I do know that be best burnerws you can get for GC games(and just about anything else) are the Pioneer 108 and 109, and also the NEC 3520a. Both can be purchased for under $65 shipped on www.newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com)

Games have a bunch of garbage put in them to pad the iso to 1.4GB. Some have a lot of garbage, others don't. Anyways, what the program does is strip the iso of its garbage, allowing you to put more then one game in a 1.4GB iso. When you select the iso with the program, it will tell you what the size will be with the garbage stripped. You will have to just see what will fit. A few examples of small games are Animal crossing(less then 100MB), alien hominid(less then 500MB, crazy taxy, mario party's, etc.

Ahh so that's the junk fills i hear so much about, i way trying to fit rez 4
both disc's on a single dvd, but i suppose there's very little if any junk on them with all the cut scenes. Do you think it worth just burning the iso's in raw format on the Dvd's. I know there are issues at the moment but do you think qoob team will fix this with future bios updates ?.
Thanx>Xboxmodder999
Xboxmodder999
04-27-2005, 02:18 PM
What issues are you talking about? Why would you do that, cube can only read about 2GB(at the very most), of a disc, so you would not be able to play disc 2.
crumpster
04-27-2005, 02:19 PM
RE4 will never fit on 1 dvd because the GC only can read 1.4gb of data. That game has little to no garbage in it. Their is other games that have tons of garbage like luigi's mansion (i think its only 500 mb or so) and (st: rs3 is only 250mb) and mario party 6 is small too.
gargoyle67
04-27-2005, 02:30 PM
Yes i gatherd that , that's why i said little or no junk in my last post about rez 4, from what i can gather there isn't many disc's you can shrink down to fit onto the 1.4 standard format. Seems hardly worth the hassle, unless your using the mini disc format discs, i'm using full size media so it's a lot cheaper on discs.
The issues i was talking about is the warning in the 1.2 nfo about writing full ISO9660-DVDs and the streaming issues.
Thanks.
Xboxmodder999
04-27-2005, 03:15 PM
There are actually a lot of games that you can be srunk down to fit multiple gmaes onto one disc.
And what they were talking about in the NFO is that it's possible to burn the stripped games onto a dvd using iso9660, but that there are some kind of alighnment issues, and also the streaming issures, thats why you just use loonycubes creator.

quick question...how thick/thin solder type should i use?
gargoyle67

Just TIN the end's of the qoob wires and cut wire back if too long, don't melt any solder over the board just tining the wires and the already solderd pins will be enuff. If you put too much on you'll have the nightmare of getting it off the cube board, solder sucker !

crumpster
04-27-2005, 04:25 PM
patelnet, you want .32 in diameter. Make sure you use Rosin-Core solder as well.
gargoyle67: I think you have the term "tinning" confused.
Here's a good how-to link
http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/solder.htm#howto
Melt a little solder on the tip of the iron.
This is called 'tinning' and it will help the heat to flow from the iron's tip to the joint. It only needs to be done when you plug in the iron, and occasionally while soldering if you need to wipe the tip clean on the sponge.

Sorry, but your going to have to put it on a DVDR. The cube can't read those cdr.

about the tinning: the qoob wires are pre-tinned, all i needed to do to attach it to the board was, well, a tiny bit of flux and a smallish amount of heat with a 15W Iron...there was enough solder on there already for all the contact points except the 2 on the chip legs, those needed a tiny bit extra just to "bridge the space" and make em solid.
question: I tried a backup of Mario Sunshine, and with a new game it is freezing right at the beginning where you get the backpack water thingin, just after he sticks it on. Anyone else with this problem who knows the solution?
Nice release though, although without being able to put apps on the MC like ps2/xbox, and the only app I really want on the MC being AReplay or something like that (over 2mbyte so they just dont fit on the qoob pro- any way to compress a DOL, anyone?)
gargoyle67
04-27-2005, 05:13 PM
Ahh i was told putting solder on the wires was called tinning, thanks for the heads up, but i found putting solder just on the ends of the wires and then soldering them onto the joints of the cube board was more than enough, and a small blob for the 5v disc.

You can make multi-game discs when you remove the garbage from the images. Many games add garbage data so that the game fills the whole disc. Many games are under 500MB, a lot are around 100 - 200MB, and some are even around 60MB once the garbage is removed. I have one disc that has 5 games on it:D
Btw...the Panasonic Q can't read game discs past the 1.4GB mark just like a regular cube. The Q has two lasers: one for games and one for movies. The movie laser is the only one that extends to 4.7GB.
Hell, i agree with you mate. All i said it looks cool. I woudnt dare pay that much for that crap.
Ok, I getcha now. I thought you meant it was worth buying because it looks cool. Anyway, I think it looks cool too, I just don't think it's worth all that money. I'd rather get a 1GB flash cart for DS once I get one in July:D :Can't Wait!!!!!:

Installing the chip on the Q is just like a normal Gamecube once you get to the motherboard. Although taking apart and reassembling it is much harder though.
The advantages to having a Q modded over a normal Gamecube is that it could play full size dvds by default, dont need to modify/replace case.
Advantages of having a Q over a normal Gamecube
-Dvd player
-Looks awesome
Worth the money?? Was for me :)
All this 2 laser talk has got me wondering if you guys are correct. Because the Q also reads CDs as well as DVDs and Gamecube DVDs. So since normal DVD/CD combo drives have 2 lasers, are we honestly saying that the Q has 3 lasers total??? I dont think i t does. I've taken my Q apart SEVERAL times, and in particularly, ive taken apart the drive before, and ive never seen multiple lasers. Although it is possible i just overlooked it.
I am ordering the Qoob right now to try it out. But does anyone know if i can take this current bios and somehow get it to work with the viper?? I know viper encrypts theirs files/bios somehow, but has anyone tried figuring it out?

With the PS2 there are 2 different 'modes' for the laser, and you can adjust the power going to the laser diode for cd or dvd separately, but it is just one lens, with the xbox one type of drive is similar to this, with 2 pots, 1 drive plays both cd/dvd with only one adjust and the other is just not a good drive for any media, but it only has one adjustment. All of them only have one lens, actually, I have yet to see a drive with more than one laser in there...
Im willing to bet that the drive in a Q is the same, its just that when its in "gamecube" mode its using some sort of gamecube drive firmware instead of the dvd firmware, which means it will only read the same size of disk as a cube (1.4G approx)...

Hi i have one of these Q.I will mod it on sunday .Now it runs with a viper with 1.4b3 GCOS bios.It plays now alle orginal games jap us and also pal, thanks the gcos bios. Before only us and jap games. The firmware in the drive is ... drive model 08 2001/31 (61)
The cube mobo (motherbord) is just a jap (ntsc bios revision 1.0) And there is a dvd motherbord .And yes ....only ONE LENS.
It reads at the moment svcd (cd and dvd),mp3 (cd and dvd),Dvd and dvd9,and alle games NO backup.Sunday i will swab the viper with the Qoob chip and i will post the results.I think it will read a full 4,7 gamedisk if there is a disk explorer in the new Qoob bios.
So more news one sunday.

No one else has a prob with mario sunshine? Guess it was a bad burn, have to try again :)

let me know how this works for you. if it works, then i am definitely throwing down my money for a qoob, too.
Alright, now with Q support I just ordered my qoob. I took apart two Q's before and fucked them both up trying to put them back together and I would consider myself pretty technically inclined. Can one of the guys who have succesfully done this post some install pics on how to take apart and put back together the Q?

I'm sorry, not trying to be rude, but how the hell do you ruin two Q's just by putting them back together?
I think it will read a full 4,7 gamedisk if there is a disk explorer in the new Qoob bios.
I highy doubt that it will read anymore then a GC laser can, because I think that the firmware for the GC part of it would restrict it from going any farther out. It will show all the data burned to the disc, but when you try to load it, it will not. Th reason being is that it uses the table of conetents to show whats on the disc, but when you try to select it, it cannot go to the area of the disc to read the actual data. It days the same thing with normal gamecubes, you can burn over 3GB of stuff to the disc, and it shows up, but it cannot load.

Ha, nah its alright. Well honestly i dont know. If you have ever taken one apart, they are pretty complex. Its not like they were broken per say but they booted up and there was an error on the LCD. There are tons of ribbon cables inside the unit, its defintly not a clean disassemble like an xbox or even a gamecube. Its actually even more complicated then the ps2 install. Anyway thats where I am now, 2 cubes in my closet that boot with an error and one that I use. I dont wanna mess this one up though.

Hmm, that sucks man. IF there is no physical damage to anything, how much would you sell one for?(PM me to let me know)
Hmm, well they go for about 400, but someone said in a thread that pansonic was selling them for 250, I dont really beleive that. Well how about this, i pretty much trust you. You cover shipping and ill send you one, if you can fix it ill sell it to you for 200. If you cant you can just send it back.

Hmm, I'm more interested in just trying to figure out whats wrong with it, and fixing it, rather then purchasing one. What if you were to send it to me, and I'll try to fix it, and send it back to you wether I fix it or not, as long as you pay for shipping back to you(I'm pretty confident that I can fix it). It will cost you nothing(besides shipping) whether I fix it or not. I'm just interested in working one one of these(I enjoy fixing electronics).
Please reply in a PM, as I don't want to get this thread too cluttered with unrelated stuff.

Does that digital optical out on the Q work while playing games or only for DVD's? I'm really wanting one of these now but I'm trying to justify the cost... But $250 is CHEAP for one of these, i mean look at lik-sang they sell it for $550 US. I can't decided, if the laser can read a full dvd-r and load till the end then I'm in for sure. Anyone test it yet?
*EDIT* I was reading IGNs review and it turns out the optical does indeed only work for dvd movies not games... thats lame.

Hi
Q is still mod with viper and closed.I wil open it again one sunday and instal the Qoob chip and 1.2 bios. There are two separate potentiometers.
Do not adjust the laser. It wil read ritec go4 1.4 dvdr.I am sure i have burn some mp3 one cdr and dvdr 4,7 GB and mp3 one a 1.46Gb Traxdata (Ritec go4 )and it works.Even there is no mod in the Q.So why adjusting the laser ??Do not try cheap dvdr are cdr it is not ok for the laser. The Q reads also movies dvd9 backups... I am sure you backup mario sunshine is a bad media backup..
I hope this helps.
I have also a normal pal gamecube with viper .The laser is not adjust ( 380 ome) and it reads all my backups one a Ritec go4 mini dvd-r traxdata. No DRE
I am a installer from Belguim and i have mod cubes Xboxen and ps2 and pstwo .Just burn always one good media no cheap ones.Tweaking the laser is always bad.If you do adjust it will read most crab media but it will kil the laser after some time.

Me and the rest of the web development team simply got fed up of this very lax attitude by 'simul8or' and after months of arguging decided it was best to simply break away to maxconsole.net because there was no point in arguing anymore with this incredibly stubborn ex admin.
I think thats who they were talking about

Thanks, was just curious about the Q as I dont have one, just regular NTSC GC, I ran the qoob disk check and my burner must have hiccuped on that one, but 9/10 minis that check 100% is pretty decent - I hadnt checked that mario until today, but it does halt at about the same place on the disk check that it does while playing.
I also do xbox and ps2 mods, usually if the ps2 has some probs reading stuff I hook the scope to the eye pattern point and adjust it with some retail games and a couple of burned disks I know to be A1 quality.
As for the GC, unless the POT is extremely HIGH (>275ohm) I dont even consider adjustment, as I know it will shorten the lasers life - just ask the ps2's one that I smoked before I got the scope.

Hey guys just wondering if someone can help me out. I own a panasonic Q modded to play NTSC games. Now here's the problem it wont ready any gamecube discs but will read dvd media such as movies. Ive taken the q apart and there is only one laser form sight (i havent realy had a dig around) the laser ribon looks larger than the standart GC laser which worrys me. If any of you guys can confirm that this is true or confim that a standard GC laser unit could replace the fault Q unit. This has left me with just a posh dvd player and it breaks my heart. So if anyone knows anywhere i can get spare parts or help me re energise my Q id be forever thankfull.

i dont think a GC laser can move far enough.
That said, if you can boot dvd media, maybe you can boot gamecube backups of dvd-r too.
Or you could try to adjust the laser pot setting?
cubehacker
04-29-2005, 04:59 AM
Do you know which to tun and to what value because it might not ber the same as a standard GC.
Hajaz
04-29-2005, 05:31 AM
nope, youll have to open it up and take a look
just make sure you use a multimeter.
that said, i would try booting games of dvdr first.

Ok what about the reading should it be the same as a standard GC.

I was this close -> <- to putting my Q on ebay, when suddernly PANASONIC Q SUPPORT!
OK so were do I get a qoobchip from? I live in the UK so the seller would have to ship there, SX version should do ok, as I dont need any mp3 players etc on the bios.
Someone was talking about the Q having 2 lenses - and I tell them to go to the nearest laptop with a dvdrom drive and eject the drive and count how many lenses there are.
Someone else mentioned about the digital audio out on the back of the Q - it works only for dvds, BUT there is a way to get digital audio from the Digital video out cable, i remember reading about it on the other forum - dextrose or the other dev one, where you needed a chip of some sort. It should work with normal cubes aswell in that case.
As for reading the whole 4.7gb from a dvd, it should be possible, its not like the lense is restricted to 1.4gb. but we will know for sure soon enough.
finally assembling the q is tougher than it sounds. I had a Q where after opening and closing it a few times, the timing was off - when you press the power button there is usually a 2 seconds delay - this was extended to about 8 seconds - it just sat there then switched off after the pause. I couldn't figure it out. I've read about some people getting an error code on the lcd

It's not that the lense would be restricted physically, but that the firmware for the GC part of it might restrict it from reading any more then a normal gamecube.

As we're pretty much in control of the drive firmware and bios, then i think, if its not already implemented, it should be possible to read the entire 4.7gb from the Q. Either way its looking to be a good time for owning a Q right about now

The Q is never going to be able to read past 1.4GB of a game disc because someone would have to crack the firmware and build a new one from scratch. There's virtually no demand for hacking a panasonic Q and thus, no one is going to devote that much time to it. So, if I were a Q owner I wouldn't get my hopes up, and just face reality.

i am willing to try ( got to get my qoob chip first!) but there is a guy who is going to mod his Q this sunday ( if I read his post right), so we will know for sure then.
As for the Q NEVER being able to read more than 1.4gb per disc, and facing reality, I was just about to face reality and ditch my Q as I thought no one would manage to make a bios that works with its custom drive, but lo and behold they did it, how? maybe they devoted some time to it, so lets wait and see.

The panasonic Q has one unique lens but 2 drive controllers, one that works in gamecube mode an can't pass the 1.4GB limit (8cms) and one on dvd player mode that can go up to 4.7GB (12cms) and can read Compact discs. However there should bea way (hardware modding) to use the Q dvd player drive controler while beeing on gamecube mode in order to reach the 4.7 GB but it wont read retail games anymore as it will be unable to read the barcode from the retrail discs, and it wont work with current gamecube drive codes liek the one n qoob bios, and finally doing that kind of hardware mod would be pain in the ass cause I am pretty sure the firmware chips don't use the same voltage, pinouts and communication protocols are they are designeed to work with two diiferents mainboards (yes the Q is composed of a dvd playetr motherboad and a gamecube motherboard)
I hope I helped you.
By the way, did anyone tryied AR + Backups on qoob 1.2 ?

I thought I would personally try and see how much data a normal GC can read. So I burned 2GB of mp3's to a disc, and tested how far the mp3 player could play them. Well I found out that it read to 1.36 GB (1,464,699,094 bytes). Thats just a few MB's more then a fullsize gamecube iso.
I thought that it would be at least somewhat more then that, but I was obviously wrong.
cory149
04-30-2005, 04:20 AM
probably about as far as you can overburn any of the overburnable medias, maybe the mp3 player is hardcoded to a specific size though...I recall reading somewhere that ~2.2 was the max, but I cant see how as the laser does not travel all that far past the normal end of the written part of a disk.
mario sunshine - yep, it was definitely a burn issue, worked out now... gotta remember to defrag before burning more costly/sensitive media.
