Well it's fixed now by resoldering the point. But what the heck happened? How did this point burn off like that? I looked for shorts, didn't notice anything. The solder points on the other power points seemed to be cracking. Could a woobly connection cause it to burn out like that?

Also, note in the picture below another part that looks like it was taking some heat. Not sure if it was manufactured like that or a result of the PSU power point breaking loose on me.

Thanks for your help.

There was a batch of faulty xboxs early in the xbox lifespan and the problem was just what you descibed - the power (foxconn - I think) connector coming away from the board - I believe there was some talk of a fire hazard (dont know if it was true).Rather than do a product recall Ms chose to send out trip switches (small boxes that cut the power to xbox in case of problems).
They sent out forms to all registered xboxs in the Uk - I never bothered getting on - but my cousin did although he never used it.
The fix was just what you did (resolder it).
If I remember Ms blamed it on the connector itself although I can't see how or why as it would seem to be a manufacturing problem to me.

The issue was the connectors used in the Foxconn power supplies didn't have any mechancial connection to the power supply board besides the two electrical points. So plugging/unplugging/wiggling the cord puts 100% of the physical stress on those soldered joints. Thus, causing joint failure.

No manufacturing problem, no 'faulty' boards. Just poor design.

As for the fires. I dunno. There were claims of fires, but I call BS on all of them. The arcing that would occure inside would be fairly minor and hard-pressed to get outside the unit to any signifigant degree. One that would have pretty much no impact if it was being used propperly. Your xbox shouldn't be sitting on the 2" thick shag carpet, covered in an xbox cozie made of tissuepaper or floating on ping-pong balls in a tub of gasoline which are about the only cases I can see where a blazing house fire could result from this.

I've got 3 of the replacement arc-fault cords from MS too, and also never used them. Never intended to, they are functionaly useless anyways. I only got them because hey, how often can you get something for free from MS?
