A senior designer of the PS3 has claimed that Sony's Ken Kutaragi insited on use of the Spider-Man style font for the official PS3 logo. Luckily Sony has all the rights required to use the Spider-Man font.

PS3 designer claims that Sony’s Kuturagi ‘insisted’ on it.
Teiyu Goto, one the main creative minds behind the design of the PlayStation 3, has admitted that SCE’s chairman and chief executive Ken Kuturagi was the driving force behind Sony’s use of the Spider-Man movie font for the PS3 logo.

In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, Goto stated: “If you really look at the PS3 contour carefully, it is rounded when viewing the console in profile. Rather than creating a typography with all the risks that entails, it was wiser to use the one from Spider-Man, for which Sony has the rights.

Now it makes sense. It takes an engineer with absolutely no creative abilities (i.e. Ken Kuturagi) to make such a stupid decision.

For those that want to use it in themes etc the font is one of the
MATA (http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/t26/mata/) type family.
Dont know if the skewed version as used by sony is commercialy available though.

Kuturagi - Wow Spiderman is sooo cool. So is Spiderman font. I want PS3 to be sooo cool. I want Playstation 3 system to have Spiderman font on it. You think it's not good idea. Too bad... Sony left me in charge and I know this will definatly make the system sooo cool.

Bahahaha i'm glad I finally know why this ultimately happened.

EDIT: (AFTERMATH) Sony - Kuturagi... Get the hell out.

i like the original ps2 font, this time it's just plastered onto the console, with no thought about it, even the game discs look ugly with the spiderman font on it.

I actually think the Spiderman font was the first thing to turn me off to the PS3, right next to the Banana controller. I used to love the PS2's font and used to use it on most my sigs...what an idiot. I think he chose it so that more children would buy the console.

9 Year old - "Oooo! Mommy! This one has the Spiderman writing!"

Mother - "Uh...Son, that's more then half my paycheck. How about this Wii?"

9 Year old - "But Moooommmyyy....*Starts bawling in the store*"

Security gaurd - "Is everything all right here? Are you alright son, is your mom hurting you?"

9 year old - "Y..."

Mother - "No, everything's fine, we'll just grab the toy and go."

*Apon leaving the store*
Mother - "Hope you're happy Timmy, now we can't eat for a month."

Off topic, anyone think with the browser on the PS3, someone should create a virus scanner, just in case, hell id say 99.9% of PC users get them, whats stopping people getting them on the PS3?????

Rofl. That's just funny as hell, even if I supported the PS3. But the date is kind of off, isn't it? But looking at the picture, I feel like I'm playing "Eye Spy The Asian Guy".

The inability to execute downloaded code, would be my guess.

Plus, the lack of any viruses written to exploit the PS3.

Put very nicely, just like how there aren't many viruses for the Mac. Could be because no one cares to do anything about either but still...it's a good point. If either get really popular you'll see a lot more viruses/***ware for them.

True, but that still requires the ability for the browser to execute downloaded code. It would be possible to make a web browser for Windows that would be virus proof, but it would be relatively feature poor. I dont' know how feature-rich Sony's is, but it doesn't seem to do much other than displaying pages (I haven't used it too much yet, though).

Another possibility would be running a browser within a virtual machine, and then destroying the virtual machine after each session. There are ways. Somehow I doubt sony will be so careful, though. I mean, I don't think anyone is. That's why malware is such a problem.

Stupid idea. It's an absolute cop out and those are bullshit excuses. It's laziness. It doesn't suit the console at all and the logo looks horrible on whatever it's attached to.

sexdwarf: I did not know that. Thank you.

The mac is a proper computer with browser, and it doesn't need a virus scanner, I don't see why the PS3 would need one. The only people that could code something that would effect it would be people with legit devkits, and I'm sure they could do without the lawsuits from Sony.

1979 was created in 1997 by a guy named Alex (http://www.abstractfonts.com/search/1979%20spiderman) as a tribute to the single "1979" by the smashing pumpkins.

The font on the album was originaly Mata (http://www.t26.com/fonts/Mata) by Greg Samata in 1993 for the T26 font foundry.

The only reason I know this is i've worked on Spiderman movie merchandise and had to buy mata whilst others tried to get away with using 1979.

Cool, now that was something I didn't know - still love the font though but can't use it anymore since it would be using the "spiderman" font...
