A number of Taiwanese game developers/operators have indicated that the PS3 will be unable to surpass the Xbox 360 in terms of global sales until 2008, a point at which it is likely its games library will be compelling enough to gamers.

Viewing that the sales performance of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) has been far short of Sony's original expectations since its launch in November 2006, the PS3 will be unable to surpass the Xbox 360 in terms of global market status until mid-2008 when its games library reaches a sufficient size, and then may reach its peak in 2009, according to Taiwan games developers/operators.

It all depends on Japan, I think. They single handedly kept the first Xbox from being dominantly #2 in the global marketplace last gen (instead they were a very close #2 with Nintendo), and they are also responsible for a huge chunk of sales-driving games.

Quality might make more of a difference than quantity here, at least, in terms of jumpstarting things. If Sony could release some good games right now, I'd have more faith.

This is under the assumption that PS3 will survive until mid-2008.
If it does, that will probably be the time I would consider getting one. It should hopefully have some good games by then.

As you can see many Japanese developers are more than willing to work for the highest bidder, and who in the gaming business can bid more than Ms.

If MS is throwing so much money around why do they still only have less than 400,000 units sold in Japan after a year? Why did the original Xbox get no games that anyone in Japan cared about?

MS may be filthy rich, but it can't afford to just buy out everything and everyone.

Having money isn't an insurance for success, particularly when they lack the "niponic" taste

Invading a new market takes more than 1 year of throwing money around you should be smart enough to figure out how it works.

Why did the original Xbox get no games that anyone in Japan cared about?
Not true.

Well, they've had 5. Where are the results?

Sony did far more against Nintendo and Sega in less time. It came out of nowhere with the PS1 and was very popular within a year. The PS2 crushed the DC practically before it was even released.

Not true.
Well, I don't know if appealing to only 100,000 people over a period of 3 years amounts to much.

Over 300000 units sold in Japan, don't forget they don't have much support from Japanese developers yet so its a pretty good number.

The situation was completely different back then, but you wouldn't know that.

The PS2 crushed the DC practically before it was even released.
Hard to say what DC could have reached since Sega pulled the plug so early.

It accounts to more than nothing.

Seems probable.. But at this rate, I would say it would take at least another year past the assumption date for the PS3 to rival anything close to the install base of the 360. This assumption is forgetting that games like BioShock, Halo 3, Forza 2, and Mass Effect will most definitely help move a few more million 360 consoles. Meanwhile, PS3 doesn't have much up it's sleeve coming out anytime soon that will help move systems.. The earliest game I can imagine to help jumpstart things would be the FF series, MGS, and maybe, the next iteration of Killzone. Hopefully their lineup looks a bit better come 2008-09.

If it cost 200 Euro or 200 dollars in less it would overcome xbox in one month!.

Don't quote this, but I recall hearing it was just for 360 and PS3.. But I could be totally wrong about this.

EDIT: I actually meant PC rather than PS3.. Whoops.

Exactly, the rumors for a multiconsole release were pure speculation. Back when the PS3 was all hype and looked amazing, the rumor could have been remotely possible.

As for games on the Xbox not appealing to the Japanese Market, what about Otogi? Mech Assault also sold well over there, as well as the sequel.
