View Full Version : Nintendo: Wii Hard Drive is just pure speculation and rumor
A Nintendo of Europe spokesperson has stated that recent noise of a Wii hard drive sparked by Japanese gaming mag Gamelabo is just a pure rumour and speculation. Although Nintendo did confirm that there are plans to product a new headset for the DS handheld console to take part in onine voice chats.
The rumours emerged after Japanese gaming magazine Gamelabo claimed that Nintendo Japan executives held a special meeting recently to discuss the new hard drive.
But a Nintendo of Europe spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that any such reports are "pure rumour and speculation".
However, Nintendo has confirmed that there are plans to produce a new headset for the DS handheld. It will allow players to take part in online voice chats and is due to go on sale alongside Pokémon Diamond and Pearl in the US next month, according to website Gamespot.

I find it interesting that Nintendo called it a rumor, but then didn't deny it.

This isn't really surprising. Usually it seems like Nintendo Eur/USA have no idea (or at least pretend they don;t) as to what Nintendo Japan really has planned. I remember even a couple weeks before the launch of DS Lite they were saying a revision of the DS wasn't even in the works.

Honestly after thinking about it, if they allowed demos to run from the SD slot in an update, it would make more sense to run them that way...no point in a expensive HDD...

Nintendo could make more money from this. Seems good enough to me. Even though they aren't nearly as bad as Xbox 360 (Microsoft) with all there different accessories.
i think its a sure thing that there will be an external hdd. where else are you going to save the demos from the demo-channel? on 24 sd-cards?

I don't think Nintendo will make a hard drive for the system. They'll add the functionality, but leave it up to 3rd parties to make peripherals marketed for the Wii. I'd really like that, so I can just buy any USB hard drive and use it. Save me money.

You know how long it would take for a demo to download? I really don't see it as a practical use for delivering demo's. Some VC games take long enough and we're only looking at like 64MB.

Except, when have they ever done that?

SD cards, they moved to standard DVD discs, and they even said a wireless IR bar was a good idea, but they'll leave it up to 3rd party manufacturers. They seem to be concentrating on core products more then selling proprietary 1st party peripherals like they used to.
