I picked up a 15 pack of Verbatim 8X DVD+R DL and so far out of 8 DVD's, not one of the piece's of chit have burned a readable copy of a 360 Back up. I burned a 7+ Gig movie and my 360 nor my DVD player will play the disk. All burned at 2.0x. I grabbed a blank, last one from my old pack of the exact same media and the Game plays just fine burned at 2.4. WTF  :D
Anyone else out there ever pick up a bad batch of media, I mean something like a whole entire cake with something like 15 blank disks? I ran a test on a burned disk using Nero CD/DVD Speed and stopped it after 30% completion due to the amount of PI Errors and failures.

I wouldn't say Verbatims are bad all all. Verbatims have long been the best when it comes to DL discs, but they don't seem to be as great as they once were. I thought maybe it was just me. They've been giving maybe 1 or 2 DREs for every 10 discs burned lately and they've gotten more expensive on top of that. I stick to Windata now, because they are working just as well if not a little better for me and they are just $1 per disc.

I read somewhere (Jesterrace I believe who is very knowledgeable in matters Media related) that in order to meet demand Verb had utilized a 2nd manufacturer. I believe they come from India. The original (and presumably best) are manufactured in Singapore. It's a possibility that the newer Indian ones are maybe inferior in quality?
Do you have the software to bring up the media code so maybe we can rule this out.
MKM001 are the Singapore originals.

Ya think that means I got some Media made in India. I dunno.
I contacted Verbatim via email and they want me to send them all the bad DVD's so they can test and replace if need be. That's gonna be real nice when they look what I wrote on the DVD. 360 NBA Street Homecourt, 360 Gears Of War, 360 Ghost Recon, etc, etc.... :D
EDIT: MKM01 is 2.5x rated speed MKM02 4x and MKM03 8x

Ya know what guys and gals? Me thinks it's my burner. Even though I modded the firmware to expand the compatibility of different types of media and bit setting and whatever else it can do now, I have not seen anywhere that my burner is compatible with the 8x Verbatims. Even though I burned at 2X.
This in a strange way is good news for me. "How so?", you ask. My 35" Sony TV took a dive a few years back and Wife had no problems approving the purchase of a new tv. Now I have a Mits Diamond series 62" HDTV. Yamaha amp took a crap a short time ago, can you say New Yamaha 7.1 surround, multi HDMI switching and many more new features over the old one. Now I'll be getting a new dvd burner, cause my old one does not work any more. LOL Not to say she wears the pants around here, It's just my way to avoid the arguing.

An update for the folks that might be interested.
Just installed a Pioneer 112D w/ 1.15 FW and burned some games on those problematic discs and they work just fine.
Should have known the issue was with my old Sony DRU700a and not the media.

Years ago I had a Sony DRU-510A and boy did I have problems with media.
If I am not mistaken back then Sony's were just rebadged Lite-Ons.
I have since that model bought pioneer burners and have had no problems at all,
I own 5 pioneer burners now (all different models) and all burn xbox360 backups perfectly (even the old 108 I have)

OK, I use the same discs, Verbatim+ DL MKM 003. You should pop your disc in and run Nero's CD-DVD Speed program, then go to Quality test, and run that. I use an NEC ND-3550A, and here are what I get at some different speeds:
Burned 8x: Avg PI Errors 162.7 Max 956 Avg PI Failures .57 Max 9
Burned 2.4x: Avg PI Errors 41.35 Max 120 Avg PI Failures .24 Max 11
Burned 4x: Avg PI Errors 40.36 Max 197 Avg PI Failures .15 Max 31
I've also noted that 2x and 1x generate an unreadable disc, but I don't have the stats for the DVD because it was a while ago. They are definitely best burned at 4x. Some media is not meant to be burned at very low speeds, especially higher speed rated discs. Burners use different methods to burn at different speeds, and some methods may be less compatible than others.
Also, if anybody's got a wii, Verbatim MCC 02RG20 (The "Digital Movie DVD-Rs") are good at 8x, they generate VERY low errors.

Damnit!
Why am I paying US$37 for a cake of 10 disc when Verbatims are made in Singapore?

Just from large amounts of experience with Verbatim media. Any of the DL batches from Singapore should be fine. But you should take care because due to the XBOX360 demand on just such disks there now appears to be a huge number of "Made In India" disks floating about on UK shelves.
Can anyone recommend the next best media (for a hitachi 47 drive) besides Verbatim, and are their any restrictions to types, product numbers to avoid, countries media comes from etc?
Perhaps even PM me where you purchase from.
I know there is a thread for this but I am UK based an alot of the material involved seems to be irrelevant.

I have been buying Verbatim 43562 DVD+R 2.4x D/Layer 10pk (http://tinyurl.com/24xafu) from Amazon for £11.29 and I am in Scotland, 5 spools now, no problems thus far.
Code 43562 are the ones to look for from Singapore.

I've always used the cheapest discs I could buy at my retailer, and I never ever had a problem with any of it.
There were always and still stories floating about that bad discs, and bad burners could damage your laser cause of extra strain and such, and with the 360 they all go on about compatibility, of course some people can't use all the discs, but this is more a Drive and FW fault than it's a laser fault.
I've used the cheapest disc I could buy for the 360 and I have never experienced even one small problem with it, I did however let a friend tell me, that Verbatim' are more sturdy, and can still be read, when the upper layer has almost been deminished.
I so far, my personal opinion, is that all the fuzz, about "how higher the price, the better", Verbatim are by far (in my country) the most expensive discs about, and in my eyes, a disc is still very much a disc.

My 2 cents. I also bought 8x Verbatims and the first two discs were nuked. I burnt them at 2x as everyone and their pets were telling me slower is better. Then I decided to screw it and go 8x, hell the disc says 8x on it, there for a reason right? 6 discs later, I'm golden, everything works a charm. If you have Verbatim 8x I'd recommend using it on the 8x setting, you've got nothing to lose since they're nnot working anyway.
burning 8x discs at 2x ?
my lite on burner doesn't even allow that, lowest i could burn was @ 4x.
hell i didn't think those 8x verbs burned any lower than 4x.
i've only used india and singapore verbs bout 60+ right now without a single coaster yet.
i've also done scans on them almost being perfect.
i think the lesson here is burner and speed, yeah alot of media out there is crap but i like to think anything from verbatim is better than most even the india ones.

In any case, I ordered a 25pk of 8X Datawrite dual layer discs from svp. Worked a charm. Got them for the same price I bought the Verbatims 10pk too! Only £12 or there about.

I dont recommend the Datawrite Titanium "grey top" DVD+R DL's. I had a few issues with the games freezing/DRE with those (especially on Grid).
Now i stick to verbs and have had no issues at all. I always burn at 2.4x and use a Pioneer 112D

I've only used the ones I linked to twice and although I haven't tried those titles out extensively, I've yet to have a problem with them. There was the odd sound speech skipping initially in one of the titles but I put that down to a minor read error.... heck, I got DRE's back when I bought the console over three years ago!
