I have a super-annoying analog stick problem: it moves by itself! I'm not saying it physically moves without I push it, but when I am playing Ratchet and Clank, Ratchet moves down-left without me touching the PSP. This also happens to other games, both ingame and menu.
I when I clean the analog controller and the motherboard, this fixes the problem for a while, but it soon comes back.
Any ideas on how to fix this without sending it to Sony?
PS: I already bought a new controller, but the problem continues with both controllers.
Edit: I don't know if it helps, but I have a TA-081.

Wait, what do you mean you bought a new controller? I also notice you said that you cleaned the motherboard, so is it open? If it is, get a Phillips 0 screwdriver (I assume you have one if you opened up your PSP) and unscrew that analog nub from the faceplate. Take compressed air, and a cotton swab VERY LIGHTLY DIPPED in some rubbing alcohol, and try to dust it/clean it, screw it back in and see what happens.

I have a similar problem, mine only really happens in X-Men, but does happen occasionally in other games... I've noticed that some games generally do this for a few minutes and then are fine.
If it always happens, no matter how long you play, you could try taking out the module, and having a fiddle with the nub, then reinstalling it all, this may solve it as it could have lost its sync with its electronics (I had this problem with a PS2 controller ages ago).
Other than that, I would suggest doing exactly whats posted above, so your probably better off doing that :p
Hope I've been of some help :D

What I mean by analog controller is the analog nub. I alredy tried that, It gets fixed for a few days (sometimes hours, depends on how much I play), and then does the same thing again.

What do you mean by "taking out the module, and having a fiddle with the nub"? Take off the whole analog stick-related part from the motherboard, clean it/search for problems and then putting it all back together?

If a company already repaired it, are you saying the problem came back?
And can you remember the company's name? I hope it is not Sony, because they aren't going to touch my PSP.

Open the PSP, then find the nub, take out the whole thing, and have a fiddle with it, don't open it as theres a very high chance that it won't work if you do, just take it out, make sure its sitting on its board correctly, and make sure that the nub is sitting in the centre correctly too, that generally causes a fair few problems.
Hope that clears up my very vague post :p

I think I found the problem: the lack of contact between the nub and the motherboard. It seems that without the analog nub, the default motion is Down-Left. I think that maybe the little rubber with the wires inside of it should be either replaced or tweaked to make contact again... any ideas on how to to that?

I have the same problem, I have tried THREE different analog sticks, and still the problem persists. I have come to the realization that it is PROBABLY the little silicone piece that sits between the motherboard and the analog stick. The only problem is I have only been able to find it for sale ONCE and that was a while ago when I was absolutely broke and couldnt afford the 5 dollars to buy it. Now that i have the money, I can't find the damn thing. I will try it as soon as I can find that piece,, and let you know if it helps.

When I was cleaning a PSP I had this problem, my solution was that the faceplate wasn't on completely tight enough.

Ive tried tightening them as tight as I can possibly get them, but no luck...any other ideas??? Thanks for the help.

OKAY. I had this problem when opening the cover of the PSP.
If at anytime you tried to take off the screen you may have pushed down on the controls and moved them lightly off line. (I also managed to knock my D-pad and couldn't go right:D ) just try re-aligning the joystick connection on the screen holding plate, it should help.:)

I tried everything, no luck so far. I also tried to put a little solder on the analog nub, but no success. On the next Saturday, I'm sending my PSP to an electronics repair service (non-Sony). I hope they figure out the problem.
Thanks for all the replys and help guys!

I have also had the same problem for some time now, and it just discourages me from playing any games. The process for temporarily fixing it gets too tedious. I just take the face plate off, and give a good blow (oh baby) and wipe down the silicone part. If I'm lucky, it works for about a half hour to an hour. Then, low and behold, it rears it's ugly head in the middle of a level. It really sucks when I'm trying to run from the cops in The Warriors and i just start strolling because it gets screwed up.
If I let go of the analog, my character will walk right/right-down. If I hold the analog up, my character just walks slowly (or if I'm on the web, the cursor just moves ultra-slow). Sometimes, it even screws up while I'm using the dpad. If i press down on the dpad, it'll move the analog, but only sometimes.
I just wish I could fix it without sending it anywhere or spending too much money. I mean, it is one from the first wave, so maybe I should just get a new one. I think I'll wait to see what the word is on this "PSP2" to decide what to do for now.

i get exactly the same problem! The analogue stick seems to default to 'down' (sometimes down-right) after a hour or so of replacing it. I've tried 2 different analogue sticks, and it always defaults to the same place. This has lead me to think it may be a problem with the littler rubber contact-y things which join the stick to the main system.
Another suggestion i've heard is that the main shaft which extends down through the analogue stick unit can become warn, so that the up/down slider can become dislodged...
stupid thing. i just bought killzone liberation and this kinda ruins the fun :(

Was any one not surprised at these issues seeing as the contacts are "taped" onto the unit? I shudderd when i saw the acid mod tut on the trig mod. Pay couple hundred bucks for a unit,,, and find out its held together by tape. (even if it is special tape with contacts onit)
Now for something remotely useful...
Check out acidmods.com they sell those retarded "tape-on" contacts. ( atleast they come with the mods.

Have you had a UP installed. To install it you have to remove the protective coating from the tracers on hte motherboard, and if on one of the tracers they went to far, they will have cut the tracer undrneath which controls part of the anolgue stick.
If not then it has damaged itself. How that happens I don't know.

I managed to completely fix mine by taking the analogue stick assembly completely apart then soldering a small blob onto each of the metallic (copper? gold? bleh) pads on the bottom to about 2mm high.
then I filed them each down to about 1mm, as flat as I could. Then screwed it all back together and hey presto, it works fine.
I think the problem was to do with the connection to the mobo via the little crappy rubber thing, not with analogue stick assembly itself.
It's an easy fix. hope it helps.
