View Full Version : Sony to slash Cell Chip spending
Reuters indicate that Sony are now strongly producind the Cell 'out of house' with Sony's Nakagawa commenting that there are many more companies today that specialize in chip production. It is also stated that Sony plan to move towards narrower circuitry, introducing a 45nm process for the Cell by the year 2009.
"When we first offered the PS2, there were no semiconductor companies that were able to make chips for the machine, so we did it ourselves. But now, there are companies that specialize in chip production," Nakagawa said.

By 2009 I think the PS3 will have some worthwhile titles.

Sorry for asking such a stupid question, but I've been thinking about this exchange regarding the CPU (Nm thingy?). What'll happen to all of those who have already bought their systems?

nothing you'll be stuck with the old chips, it doesn't make them run faster or anything just cooler and more efficiently. That's why it sucks to be early adopters of new hardware. Not that I wouldn't be an early adopter I always have to have the latest thing but this is one of it's drawbacks.

Oh, I see... thanks for replying :)
Then it's not a big deal waiting until 2009, right? What do you mean with "cooler"? The opportunity of avoiding heatup on the system?
Haven't bought a PS3 yet, but I will in a few months but this is kinda annoying, lol.

Nothing. The old chips still work the big differences are the new chips would be smaller, and run cooler. For Sony the big deal is that it would be cheaper to produce.

but still
a 45nm process is pretty amazing when you think about it
