View Full Version : Hydro Thunder for Playstation1 no sound

Hydro thunder for PS1 emulation has no sound at all. I checked the .cue file and it says:

FILE "HYDROTHUNDER-U.BIN" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE2/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00

I believe the info means that it is not CDDA. So, what could the problem be? I used PSGUI221beta to create the eboot and keys and I am using 310-OE-A firmware. I also tried the use the bin and the cue files with Clone CD to make the 3 files that it creates but no go. I tried different compressions (0 and 9) but no sound either. All my other games work OK. I even got Warhawk to give me music and sound. I luv Hydro Thunder and having this game portable with sound would be awesome. Thanks for any help...

I would guess that it is not cdda audio and it's in a media format pops doesn't currently support. i have a similar thing with the two xcom intros, i'm 99% sure they should have sound but it's been years since i played the psx version so i could be wrong. I've seen similar posts about cutscene video having no sound on one or two games.

Just a guess as i really don't know, i've never played the game either.

Thanks, but the game has no sound at all...not even sound effects, voice or music. Very strange. Thanks again.

Well, I tried to run my .bin and .cue with a PS1 emulator for PC called pSX110 and it worked. The sound worked as well, but there was no in-game music when playing. There was intro music though. I just mounted the image.

Redump your image. Sounds like it has a wrong CUE file that misses the CD-Audio tracks.

From what i can tell there is no cdda and its a file burried in the bin files stored in the cd.

Well, I did try mounting the .bin and .cue with Alcohol 120%. Then I used the latest CloneCD to create the .sub, .img, and the .ccd. I then used PsGUI221beta to create the EBOOT and keys files. After that I put them into my GAME folder using 3.10OE-A firmware and no sound at all.

I tried a different PS1 emulator for PC called 'AdriPSX ILE Edition 1-0-5'. I loaded up the original .bin and .cue files and guess what? There is music and sound effects and voice where there is supposed to be. So the original image must be good? I have been watching ebay for a copy of the original PS1 disk and it goes for $30! Wow, must be a very rare game.

Also, i cannot redump the image because I do not have the original disk.

Thanks for all the help everyone...

This thread woke me up...

Hydro Thunder still is one of my favourite games on the PC, I still take it from the shelve from time to time to have a few rounds. So I was really delighted when I realized a PS1 version exists which can be run on my favourite portable games machine!

So I went looking around and finally bought the game on eBay. I'm waiting delivery now.

What I'd like to know is, what is the best way to create an iso from the disc, that can be converted to PSP format, without loosing (too much) sound? Please someone advice...

Great! It is my fav game too. Use CLONECD to make the image. Make sure to change the format to .ccd. Then, after you did that, use the latest PSX2PSP 0.7.1 gui or use PsGUI221beta to create the eboot. Then you can upload to http://blackcats-games.net for everyone to enjoy. If you need a invite, let me know. I look forward to sound in this game finally.

Ya, I noticed it is not XA either. What format is it and can we get Dark_Alex maybe to support it in the next popstation? <crosses-fingers>

I think you need Sony for this update. If there are more games using the same kind of audio, they surely will improve the emulator

Btw. found some copies of the game on amazon uk (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00004UA4E%3ftag=mobygames-21%26link_code=xm2%26camp=2025%26dev-t=D12JEXH87B4VLK) for £1.50 and on amazon germany (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00005ALWK%3ftag=mobygames0e-21%26link_code=xm2%26camp=2025%26dev-t=D12JEXH87B4VLK) at €9,94.

Not being patient for my original game to arrive, I found and downloaded the game on the net. Converted it using Autopopstation4 and it has no sound. It's a 130 Mb bin/cue file, so I think disc padding has already been removed. Could that be the problem? As soon as I receive my game, I'll dump it unchanged, convert it using the tools you mentioned (and maybe some others too) and give it a go.

Thanks, I can't wait. Does anyone know what format the sound is in? There is 1 .bin file and about 16 .stv files that are from 800KB to 3.5MB in size. Also there is a ICON_~1 file that is 0 bytes in size. I got this info from mounting the .cue using Alcohol 120% and looking at the HYDRO\AUDIO folder.

I think its to do with the .stv files but you need someone who write emulators to answer this.

If I may make a suggestion with regards to getting Hydro Thunder working with sound....

Please try to use cdrwin to rip the original disk to you harddrive. Once you have done that, and have a .bin and a .cue file, use popstation to convert that into your eboot file and see if that works. Please let me know how it goes, I'm DYING to play Hydro Thunder on PSP! If I had the original disk here I'd do it myself, but I don't.

If you're gonna use CUE/BIN then you must use Zinga's GUI as it's the only one that supports CUE files ...

The problem seams to lie with the audio format hydro thunder uses not the extraction method because the bc eumlators seam to play the same source iso's fine.

I remember I read somewhere that "unpadded" iso's sometimes don't convert well. As soon as my original arrives, I'll make an uncompressed, unpadded image and convert that.

Masterchiefx, what's your iso size? Mine is around 130 Mb which means that it's unpadded.

Mine is 135,189KB or about 135MB. I cant wait for you to get your copy to see if this works. I have been eyeing copies on ebay. They always sell for about $25+ shipping. When you get it and if this works, are you then going to upload to a torrent tracker or do you have FTP? If you do, I will set up one and we can swap files. later.

I have the Original disc. I have dumped it with isobuster, clone cd, alcohol 120.
I have tried everything people have suggested with no luck to get the sound to
work. Every file format, every popstation, different rips from diffent sources. I
love this game, but without the sound it is not much fun. I believe the problem lies with sony's emulator. Wait for another update.

Maybe we can convert the sound files on the ISO to a format that is compatible and then rebuild the ISO. Probably have to change the coding in the game to be able to play and use the audio files also....:(

evelsnake, do you have a PAL or NTSC disk? Does the disk work in PC PS1 emulator like ePSXe? Maybe I can have a go at the disk. Where abouts are you? I am in Dallas, TX.

Hello evelsnake,

Xphyle mentioned to try to use cdrwin to dump the disk. I believe you might want to try that. Then use 'PsGUIni300beta' or 'icetea1.1_win' to create your eboot. Icetea is a new one that I like. You can get it here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/icetea/

Well, I cant wait to see how it goes. If you want to send it to me, I can try a few things maybe. If you send it to me, then when i am done, I will send it back. I'm cool. PM me for more info or any questions.

Hello masterchiefx I have a ntsc version of the game. The game works with sound in epsxe. I live in california.

As your not seing the obvious i post it again.
Hydro thunder works with pc emulators because they support the sound system HT uses however the psp doesn't so you cant have hydro thunders sound.
untill we can work out how the convert the sound to proper sould HT is unplayable on the psp.

I thought, generally an emulator works because it emulates the target system's hardware on the host. Then all software should work. Because of speed, sometimes the target's bios is patched to use functions from the host system directly instead of emulating them.

What you're saying implies the pops emulator takes a totally different approach, possibly by translating individual files to something the PSP can handle. That could be done, but it sounds more reasonable the HT sound system uses some forgotten setting/register on the sound chip that isn't emulated yet.

Your close to what im thinking.
What i am actually thinking is that the emulator is missing rutines/file necessory to play hydrothunders audio format.

My game finally arrived today. Allthough I'm afraid the sound will not work on the current emulator versions, I'll give it a few go's and keep you informed (haven't done anything yet).

UPDATE: Sad, sad, sad... I tried 4 different methods (Cdrwin dump + Zinga's GUI, Cdrwin dump + Ice-T 1.3, Clonecd dump + Zinga, Clonecd dump + Ice-T) and still no sound. I guess the only thing we can do is wait for an updated emu from Sony.
