View Full Version : Nintendo Cracking Down on BitTorrents?
A Wii fan blog is running a story which indicates that Nintendo are cracking down on torrents. The news comes after one bit torrent user was sent a warning letter by the ESA after downloading 'Legend of Zelda'. The user claims he did not download this specific file however...
Another newsbit from our pal JoeyBuckets, this time he happens to be directly involved. After downloading what he swears was an old Zelda cartoon from BitTorrent, his ISP was contacted by the ESA with the following letter. In short, be careful what you download and stop downloading illegal games unless you want to lose your internet service and possibly deal with other legal issues. Now that the Virtual Console is out, Nintendo can and will take a hard stance against even older ROM’s if they wish. We highly suggest just getting the Wii system and playing your favorite games legitimately and supporting those that put in the work to bring them to us. We at The Wii Experience do not condone downloading illegal software and the following letter is an example of what your ISP may receive if you do such activities.

Nintendo can go f_u_c_k themselves.
Do the couple of you understand how stupid your comments are?
I guess that today every stupid hillbilly b_a_s_t_a_r_d has access to the internet, but guess what bitches - who the f_u_c_k cares about your "do not use pirated software" opinion!
I will never ever go and buy original games. As long as there is a way to play pirated games, I am going to play pirated games. And if a system or a console appears - thad cannot be cracked for piracy, who gives a s_h_i_t, I will not buy it.
So go ahead, sue me, f_u_c_k_e_r_s!

OK, d_o_u_c_h_e_b_a_g.
I *KNOW* how you use BitTorrent, Peerguardian, etc. None of that stuff is going to matter because BitTorrent is in the crosshairs.
Do you think its a coincidence that everyone who gets sued or caught are using BitTorrent?
There are other ways to get stuff. BETTER ways. You will never be caught, and you can max out a 30M connection like it's no ones business. Do that on BitTorrent, retard.
I doubt you have ever downloaded 30GB in 3 hours on BitTorrent.

Peer Guardian or Protowall are only IP range blockers.
I don't think this makes filesharing much safer, anti-piracy activists can also use a proxy.

What exactly are you trying to claim? That people who buy software are "stupid hillbillies"? Do you even understand how idiotic that association sounds?
I will never ever go and buy original games. As long as there is a way to play pirated games, I am going to play pirated games. And if a system or a console appears - thad cannot be cracked for piracy, who gives a s_h_i_t, I will not buy it.
I can't even begin to express what a completely selfish imbecile you are. Software companies often spend millions on game development and developers bust their ass on the work. You really think they should be working for free, jackass? Are you really so self-centered to think that they should be spending all of this time and money to entertain some little punk like you?
Not only are you contributing to the price increase of games, but if everyone shared your opinion... there would be no games at all. You’re actually trying to encourage everyone to never buy games. Do you realize that is exactly counter-productive for what you want? Clearly you can’t quite grasp the meaning of “consequence”.
I am certainly not going to pretend to be angelic and claim that I never pirate software. However, I buy a lot of games, music, and movies. I buy the titles that I feel deserve to be supported. You just whine, cry, demand, and take.
Scumbag. Maybe you should try getting a real job making more than minimum wage so you can actually afford a $50-60 game. When you’re done with that job, you can mow my lawn for free. ...because I don’t believe in paying for it.
So go ahead, sue me, f_u_c_k_e_r_s!
Sounds like you need discipline from your parents.

calm down, everyone. Let's talk about the news and not each other... People use BitTorrent because it's available and very nearly hassle-free. If it were just as easy to directly download things, they would do that. However, people do get caught, but it's usually only those that download ridiculous amounts of pirated data and/or sell it. The logistics behind catching even 1% of people who download illegally are far beyond the capabilities of law-enforcement. I am not an expert by any means, but for the "casual user", BitTorrent is easy, reliable and safe. Besides, if Nintendo wanted to stop piracy so badly, why didn't they do more than change the password on the "hidden" communications port to lowercase?

They did if that methade works at all the password is defiantly different so far we have yet to see any proof timblic or however its spelt was being quite vague and cagey talking more about what can be done instead of what has been done I don’t know if I believe as far as he actually gotten in real work

eeek, i knew this would eventually happen xD. just like with mpaa, and riaa, as a medium starts to get profitable, the company's are gonna start cracking down.
heh, w/e. i don't mind that they're cracking down...but kinda pisses me off that once they start to make money they can't be happy with it...but want more...and more...and more. kinda the reason why i've stopped buying alot of games...just not worth the money for...few hours of play. online games ftw! bought cs for 20bucks and it's kept me more entertained than zelda:tp (seriously...which...makes me feel sad because i grew up with zelda and the house that mario built).

Normally I would agree. Except when there are are punk children contributing to a thread that clearly need to be put in their place.

I agree. Though, I think brywalker was posting a rhetorical question.

Not exactly. The ESA do not "scale" software piracy. They are extremely aggressive in fighting it.

The ESA is not law-enforcement though. They are a publisher funded organization offered to protect their industry and income. Basically, they are paid to catch pirates independent of the publisher or legal system. While the ESA can not press charges directly, they are very successful in obtaining legal action against offenders. They have taken down many, many sources of illegal software. For the most part, I don't believe in everything they do but no one can argue that they don't fool around.
Honestly, I'm confident that Nintendo has little knowledge of what the ESA is even doing.

I believe that the amount of people with the lack of knowledge to download software get it to work etc are minimal compared to the people that don't, Okay downloading pirated software is a problem for developers but surely this is taken into account before a project has even begun, yeah its wrong, but if it really was such a huge problem can there not be more done to prevent it? you hear about people being busted for distributing pirated software on a mass scale for profit but what about the average joe who downloads for his own use? how much of a problem is this? is it nearly putting developers out of business? will it ever come to the point where developing games is non profitable? I guess only time will tell, but all the time it is made possible it will happen.

of course bittorrent is being targeted, its the next filesharing equivelant of Napster. But thats just it, they've been fighting it, and losing. Everyone thought bittorrent was going to get dealt that lethal blow from Suprnova going down...nope, we just got more (and superior) private trackers. From my 8 years being involved with filesharing all I've seen piracy enforcement do is cause filesharing to evolve another step ahead of what "they" can enforce. Besides, I agree with the poster who said they can't even begin to get 1% of those using the program. I remember at my university you had people switching over from limewire, emule etc..overnight to bittorent..by my senior year everyone was using it, there were college hosted websites with how-to's, faqs, etc on how to get the most from your university lan, how to configure your port forwarding, all that...with the sole intention of filesharing. The fact that you can EASILY find all of your media wants online for free has stopped being "geek" know-how and has become really common knowledge for anyone with a half-decent connection.

Nintendo owns them. They become public after seventy five years... I believe that there was a rumor saying that it was twenty years.
Damn.... I downloaded RedSteel... *hides in closet*
Why do people use bittorrents? Because you can host send large files without taking up server space; it's easier to distribute torrents rather than to host them on a website (like that you'd just be asking to get sued from Nintendo); torrents can be stopped and started whenever and you can continue your download easily; they make the world go 'round.
And of all companies I bet Nintendo gets hurt by piracy the least. It's mostly children that get their parents to buy them Nintendo stuff... and do you think that they know how to pirate stuff? Yeah, it's still effective, and I'm against it, but I do it anyways.
No more torrents for me though. O.o

Well, who gives a f_u_c_k for those "I busted my a_s_s off to make a game so they can download it freely" dumbasses. Why don't they devise a way for games that makes them piracy-proof?
Until then, my lazy, good for nothing ass will keep downloading ( atleast for me ) FREE games, by means of usenet, bittorrent, forum links, rapidshare or whatever. Who cares?
Like I care for those money-hungry corporate idiots that make bad games, and expect ME to pay for THEM? What the hell?

Nothing beats an original, but..sure some backups are ncie to test, sicne not everyonec an get demos.... of soemthing is 20 years old, not even find a hardware to play it. Nintendo rooms should be donated to publicity already, that would boost Ninendo status, and i ams rue they rerally could win even more $$$$ making their distribution legal.

you dumbass, what do you think they're trying to do? why do you think sony created a UMD? why do you think nintendo used ROM's? why do you think games have copy protection on them? because when they made them, there wasnt a way to rip/dump them, its the hackers that make it possible, the corps dont suddenly think "oh, i have an idea, lets make our games pirateable! that way we can lose millions, and the devs too!"

Like I care for those money-hungry corporate idiots that make bad games, and expect ME to pay for THEM? What the hell?
First of all its a BUSINESS, any business is supposed to bring money in young buck...try paying attention in class. If the games are so BAD why are you keeping your computer on all day and night, going through the hassle of learing how to download and use the downloaded files to play the BAD games? No one buys a game if it is bad, so the answer is no, NO ONE es expecting you to pay them for a bad game, you purchase what you want and if you want it.
so I am expected to BUY software in the 21-st century? F_U_C_K NO! Keep them phone lines burnin'!
Not only in the 21 st century but ALWAYS, again its called a business. Doctors will not see you for free, MCdonalds will not feed you for free what makes you think that these companies can spend so much money on advertising, development, testing etc..so they can give you free games. Who pays them? IF THEY DECIDE NOT TO MAKE ANY GAMES ANYMORE, YOU WON'T GET ANY....FREE OR EVEN IF YOU PAY FOR THEM. Do you understand this? If the business isn't there, no one is going to make any new games. Who the hell works for free?
I am just going to download a couple of newly released games... wanna make something of it?
We really don't care how you spend your time Tommy Boy, with that attitude you aint going no where. If the ESA boys come knocking I'll be sure to rat you out in a second just for having so much mouth. Being a rat is against my principles but you just dont come off like that and expose yourself....and as cheap as you are you won't want to pay the fines or bail $$$ so I guess your @ss will stay there....don't talk so much in there and if you drop the soap in the showers... just use water!
