3.03OE Custom firmwares run ISO's natively. ISO's in X:/ISO will run from the XMB
Yes with Dark_alex Custom Firmware 3.03 OE-B ;)
EDIT: 2 late :( :)
:)
Maybe I should rephrase my question: is it possible to run a game, extracted from an ISO image of a UMD, from the memory stick without using any custom firmware or devhook-type loader ?
Do I simply copy the files into PSP\GAME or is there more to it :o
Firmware is 3.03, there's no going back ;)

No, sorry.
All SONY firmwares above 1.5 only execute signed code. In order to get around this there must be a known exploit that can be used in order to run unsigned code. 1.51 - 2.80 use the libtiff exploit to then run unsigned code to launch ISO's and other homebrew. There is no known exploit for 2.81 and above so therefore you can only run signed (official) code.
THE FACT THAT YOU CANNOT RUN ANY HOMEBREW ON 2.80+ FW'S IS EXPLAINED IN ALL THE FAQ'S ON THIS AND OTHER SITES. PLEASE READ THEM BEFORE POSTING.
Apologies but this question must have been asked over 100 times on this forum alone now. ;)
Thanks for your reply. I realise that homebrew cannot be used from fw 2.80+, but I didn't know if fw 2.80+ could run an exact copy of a UMD game from the memory card in the same way as it does for game demos.
It seems you have answered my question
