i want to rename network updates to Reboot PSP without having to use the xmb icon hack..?

only if you're on 1.5...
since the topmenu_plugin.rco is fully encrypted since 2.6.
the xmb icon hack uses a modified 2.5 topmenu_plugin.rco.

may i ask why you don't want to use it??

there is no other way currently since the file is encrypted.

the only way is with xflash and a decrypted top_menu.rco from 2.5 flashed to your psp. But your screwed either way since it's the same idea as the icon hack so you'll still lose certain icons on 3.0+ OE. (I would recommend the icon hack since the newest version includes the missing icons now...well sorta.)
