View Full Version : 303 OE-B full video resolution for ms0:\VIDEO folder

Reading the readme of the recent update by Dark_AleX, it appears to me that he seems unaware of the "new" video folder (ms0:\VIDEO) that was introduced with firmware 2.8. He only mentions the outdated video format (the one that goes into ms0:\MP_ROOT\101ANV01), which is not interchangeable with the other. :(
The main advantage of the "new" video folder is that it allows PAL-users to convert their DVDs in full 25fps which does not work in the older structure (only 23, 24 and 30). Also you can use standard ISO conform MP4 files that play just fine everywhere else. The other enforces a proprietary modification which makes it incompatible and gives you less options in the choice of encoding software. It would be much easier, if we could just use the ISO standard with full resolution.
Sadly, the old restrictions still apply to the "new" video folder, i tried 368 * 272 and 480 * 272 with no success, while using same other encoding options played fine in 320 * 240 there.
Please, Dark_AleX, if you happen to read this: is it possible to extend the video freedom to the "new" video format as well? Or is your hack related to the encrypted video standard Sony uses in P-TV (figured that because you wrote "decrypted"), making it impossible to apply elsewhere?

I try to use 3gp converter, but when i insert mp4 video file, Psp say "file not supported".
I agree, to support full-res videos in the root video folder would allow us to download them via RSS onto the PSP, whereas the current solution always requires a PC connection or a manual transfer to the memory stick!
Would be great if D.A. could enable that!

if you wanted to download via rss, you can still download it via the webbrowser and place it in the old folder.

Ah, I was just thinking of this too... Which is why I was trying to look into how Dark_Alex unlocked it for the normal MP_ROOT folders.
Was about to make a topic about it but found it here. It would be nice if we knew how to do it so that we could experiment with it ourselves. I have an RSS Channel system set up at home to transfer my files from network to PSP when ever, and it's really great... adding the moving and renaming part after using the system wirelessly seems to make it pointless.

i like watching tv series on my psp and prefer putting them in subfolders to keep a well-structured vief of my video files...
so, is there any way to have subfolders in the mp_root system?

No. That is the main complaint about the built-in video support on the PSP - no subfolders beyond the two that Sony requires (one for MPEG4 files, and one for h.264 files), and no descriptive names.
If you want to do subfolders and descriptive names, you'll need to use a non-Sony video player like PMP Mod/PMP Mod AVC.

thats not true, since firmware 2.81 you can use ms0:/video/ folder and you can choose a filename freely...
but dark_alex did not hack this part of the firmware, so there is still a resolution restriction if you use the video folder...

Yes, but we were talking about full-res videos, which as you say don't work with that.

When I heard Dark_Alex removed the resolution lockout I wondered if it included the ms0:/VIDEO folder. Guess I was wrong. Lets hope the next release will include this because the VIDEO folder is much easier to manage.

i am hoping d_a will release a patch for this soon, i would think it would only be a small patch,
but it might take some time before its completely finnished and working,
i'm confident that dark_alex will release a patch for this, I expect 3.03OE-B2 or 3.03OE-C soon(like in a couple of days or so) ...

A little off the subject,
Although I agree subfolders under the new firmware would be great, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to view anamorphic widescreen using 3.03OE-B. I'm using 3GP Converter to convert my videos to 480 x 272 which rears wonderful video under 2 pass, but my anamorphic widescreen videos are squished just a bit.
Does anyone have a new .ini command or code I can plugin to 3GP? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer with this.

you might try winnydows xvid4psp, i think is has an option to add black borders at the bottom and top, or to cut off the edges of the screen...
maybe that would help you for now, until dark_alex fixes the video folder and resolution "bugs" that are in the 3.03oe-b right now ...

Keep an eye on this thread (http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=44573) as it tracks the latest Transcode.ini file for use with the 3GP Converter. If you look at the current version (always in the first post of the thread), it has many items that correspond to encoding a certain way (resolution, bitrate, # passes, aspect ratio).
