Uh oh, look what one over excited gamer and the Wii remote done to a family's 70-inch $4500 TV!

Karlee Mann (14) sat by while her cousin Bryce (also 14) dominated the initial few games of Wii Sports Tennis. When Bryce finally gave in to her protests, the heady mix of frustration, adrenalin, anticipation and family rivalry proved too much. In an instant the remote slipped from her hands, the weak Gen 1 strap failed to catch the escaping projectile, and the Mann’s $4500 TV took a clean bullet to the head. Oops.

Having played with a "GEN 1" strap'd Wii Remote, I can say that more than likely, this person did not 1) have the strap cinched around their wrist correctly or 2) have the strap in place at all.

The other alternative is that the person was actually still holding the controller when they punctured the TV. I've seen my kids get "a little too close" to the TV while playing.

Anyone that has enough force to put a Wii Remote THROUGH the lexan/plexi front of a TV has WAY too much power behind their movements.

Surprised there aren't "Wiisurance" brokers popping up at this point...

And that's why YOU WILL NEVER EVER SEE A Wii (a.k.a The Bane of all LCD / Plasma Screens), anywhere near my House! Damned Kids and there crappy Wii-motes destroying several Thousands of Dollars of Equipment! (Evil Grin @ the Wiitards and there loss of there TV's) :D

No my Living room is a declared Wii-Free-Zone!!

The only real question left is which other System should I pony up for.
I still have doubts about the Failbox 360, being let down by the Original Failbox.
and $0NYs'®™ €600.00(EUR) Wunderkind ~If they ever decide to release it ON TIME!!~ seems like a gigantic waste of Cash right now.

I suppose Microshaft®™ should by all rights have the best position of the Three, but, I personally that Micrshaft®™ has what it takes to hand $0NY®™ there Arse on a Plate to them.
Given that it'll be a cold Day ~Somewhere~ or an Extraordinary Title with Bonus Goodies tied-in (i.e. Blue Dragon), before anyone would even take notice of there Failbox over there.

Seems like I have to live with my Failbox1 a little bit longer.
Not a problem really as I still have yet to finish Ninja Gaiden on it...

i dont know.. are people really that dumb?? By now noone should be letting go of the Wii mote anymore.. Especially after all the stories of disaster.

I have had a wii since launch (as do a bunch of my friends) and none of us even came close to ever doing damage like this.. Dont get me wrong, we have swiped each other a few times while playing 4 player... But nothing major. If you are using soo much force that the Wii mote strap breaks and the thing comes flying out of your hands with enough speed to break your TV... Then you should really re-evaluate your gaming techniques.

what a waste of money, i don't see how people can break the wrist straps so easily. all you have to do is swing controllably.

I will NEVER understand WHY THE HELL they are swinging it hard enough to break TVs. Hell, WITHOUT the wrist strap, if it slipped out of your hand, it would NOT have enough force to do THAT!

It would if you are trying to act out whatever you are doing. Having said that though I really have no sympathy for any of these "wii-accidents." If you have played a wii for longer than 10 secs you realise why nintendo gave you the wrist strap. That little bugger of a controller is slippery. So if you are a bit dense and prefer not to wear your strap or sling it around at mach 1, you kind of deserve the consequences.

This gives me another reason not to buy a crappy "HD" TV. They're made out of some thin crappy plastic that can be punctured? Man that blows. I guarantee that if I threw my Wiimote at my SDTV all that would happen is a bounce back. It's made of really thick glass, not some cheesy plastic. Plus it's got no delay time. Not even 2ms. And it was 20 bones at a garage sale.

Precisely, there shouldn't be any sympathy for these *accidents*... If they are swinging the Wiimote hard enough to do this kind of damage, they are obviously not following the safety guidelines, and are using the Wii in a way it was not intended to be used... Any damage to their property is their fault, and solely their fault, alone...

that pictured TV doesnt look nearly 70". I never even heard of 70" tv's.......biggest i heard are 65". Maybe projector screens can be wall-sized or shrinkable....but a 70" TV? highly doubt it

wow, am i the only one thats really tired of seeing the "disasters" caused by the wiimote? Seriously i personally dont know anyone that plays wii games in a way that would cause this bull. I think that anyone that breaks a tv or a window or anything else should be shot in the forehead. Not only that but anyone that was in the vicinity at the time should be shot in the forehead as well. Why? Because they should've done something about the dumb@$$ playing the wii. Lets clean up our gene pool a little. This is an excellent time.

wii mote breaks something = your fault, BANG

You've got to be playing like a total jackass to throw the Wii remote. Granted, it would be nice if the remotes had rubber grips, but I've never even come close to loosing grip on it. What is wrong with people?

You've got to be kidding me. Yeah, I refuse to buy better technology because it's not built like a tank. Clearly, TVs should be designed to have items thrown at them. My 1980 21" hand-me-down is a real man's TV and totally PWNZ UR HD CR4P!!!111

By the way, this a rear projection display; not a glass CRT. The projectors are at the bottom angled up. That's why it still works with a hole in it and is much cheaper and easier to fix than replacing an equally sized display tube. The screens are hardly "thin" but I guess I've been controlling the urge to throw things at it.

Did they strap a hammer to the wiimote?!

Did they strap a hammer to the wiimote?!

That's a great point.
I use to work as an electronic tech and I know that a remote can't do damage like that. I've destroyed a great many TV and this just isn't possible.
Just like the remote embedded in the TV picture I call fake.

Too true my friend.
If you ask me these are just desperate pleas for attention from people that;
a) Have too much money
b) Have very extensive insurance
