View Full Version : Recharging with different volts recharger

This is a very very stupid question, but I'm very desperate. I lost the adapter for the PSP recharger (the one that plugs into the wall). I found another one that looks almost exactly like it, not sure if its the same one. It has 7A/125V. Will this work... or will it fry my battery (and burn my house down)?

I'm new on this forum, but I know enough about electronics to help you out
if it fits in the hole, and says 125v/7a....you most certainly will either have a blown fuse or a fire shortly after plugging it in to your psp. Voltage needs to be 5v, amperage is under 2a, so that would definitely fry your charging circuit. This might also be unnecessary to say, but when it comes to lithium technology and charging, DO NOT use anything that's out of spec or questionable to charge any lithium battery (li-ion, li-poly..etc) I'm an avid hobbyist in r/c flying, and we use li-poly batteries for our lightweight electric planes, one would NEVER THINK about charging a battery with any more than 4.3v, that's their rated max voltage...4.2v for li-ion which is what the psp has I think. Most charging circuits in home electronics have a diode of some sort than steps the voltage down off a wall charger from 5v to the needed voltage, not sure if the psp has this, but it does use 5v from the Sony adaptor. Less than 5 minutes at over-voltage and you have a serious fire that has caused several of my online friends to lose their house...over a $20 battery pack, not worth it. Please heed my warnings about the care of lithium tech, properly handled they are never a threat.

LOL, thank you very very much for that detailed post. You couldn't have enforced it any further... I'll just buy a new PSP recharger. How much do they cost these days?

Thanks again for taking your time to prove that I am too facking desperate xD

since you are in the market...I recommend getting a dual usb adaptor. I got one on ebay for $8 shipped, it zips up into a small package has usb and charging ports on one end and normal usb on the other. Like one of the retractable usb cables but has a charger lead for the psp. It doesn't quite charge as fast as the sony charger, but it is safe, usb will never provide much more than 5v, and without a powered hub will not provide more than 500ma, which is 1/4 the max rate of the sony charger, but that still only means a couple hours if you are using the stock sony battery. I use mine with a 12v lighter adaptor in the car to charge on the go, and when transfering files as it doesn't run the battery down with this cable. Cheap and easy replacement, especially considering an official sony is around $25 and a suitable off-brand will not be much less. Hope this helps you out

Cool, do you mean like this one? http://www.joytech.net/1/products/psp/2/32/DataCharge-USB+In-Car-Power-Adapter.htm

actually this is exactly like the one I got, it's more portable to take with you...the cable retracts into the little case...but either of those would work well. If you are in the uk, the one I listed is your cheapest route probably, or there are others selling in us and canada, bout the same price. The data transfer rate would be better with the ebay one you posted, but not as pocketable, if you want that. I wouldn't go the for other one (not ebay one) as I've seen them in stores for that price, and that's kinda high but yeah either would work

I'll buy it then. Thanks! =D

Btw, I also found another plug. Although, it's used for my mom's laptop. It's 3A/125V. It has less A, will that work? >_>

5V/2A MAX, if either are more, it will cause a fire or blown fuse....this is a 125v/3a, both are more...and honestly 5V/2A is exactly what you need, anything less will take longer to charge or not charge fully......

On another note, I just thought about what you had posted....are you missing the whole charger or just the part that plugs into the charger? If you have the box with the plug that goes into the psp itself, and just missing the other half, it is a 7a/125v part....you can plug this into the charger part to the psp if you still have that....not exactly sure if that's what you are asking

I see. Forget it then, I just brought myself a MadCats USB charger for 7.99 CAN. Great price, and I don't have to wait for Ebay. =X

Thanks for the info! Really appreciate it =D

I've been recharging for 3 hours and it only replenished 25%. xD Guess I'll have to leave it overnight... meh. My original took at least 3 hours to recharge. =/
