Some new screens have been releases for Burnout 5 and they look absolutely stunning. A developer says the game features a complete new engine and has the best crashes to ever grace a video game.

Developed primarily for the PS3 - although an Xbox 360 version is also in the pipeline - the fifth Burnout is sporting an entirely new game engine and apparently has "the best crashes ever in a game," according to series developer Criterion's Alex Ward.

"If you don't believe the crash is real, then it's not going to frighten you," Ward recently told MSNBC. "The first crash you see on PlayStation 3 has got to go way beyond everything you've ever seen, beyond anything that we've ever done. Because every time we put our game out, people say, 'It's the best crashes ever in a game.' We've got to go beyond that now. We have to go beyond a game, and we have to go beyond a game car crash. That's what all of our work is focused on right now."

I guess I'm the strange kind of people... for some odd reason the one thing I try not to do when I play a racing game is crash. What next a FPS that's going to give you bonus points for getting shot in the head?

Apparently, you haven't ever played the Burnout series. It's part of the game, crashing others and sometimes you crash accidentally.

Seriously, if you haven't ever played the series, don't try to make "educated" comments.

i agree with the first poster, too often racing games are about crashing about and unrealistic rubbish. when i play a racing game im always trying to take best lines into corners and race in a realistic way.

good to know the crash animations are improving but it doesnt necesserilly make a good racer.

hmmm kinda off topic but what ever happened to the road rash series? thats one game where i didnt mind hitting ppl off bikes with chains in a stupid manner :)

Didn't they say the same about the last burnout game?

Turns out your the prejudgemental one here buddy, I have played the series, I rented the psp version, and I played one on the ps2..... and guess why I stopped playing both.... yeah you probably guessed it, I got to a part were the object of the "race" was to crash into as many cars as possible. It might be a good game for some, but not for me. I'll would rather play GT or GT2 on the ps1 then play either a NFS or a Burnout game... but as I said I could be just weird.

racing games dont always have to be realistic do they? i dont see anyone complaining that they never shot a red turtle shell at someone when they went go karting....

The burnout games are arcade racing games, very easy to get into and the crash modes are great fun and very original. Ive definetly played the burnout series more then GT/Forza and even RR. Not everyone wants to spend hours tweaking their engine in the garage or playing about adding endless decals. I for one dont really understand the garage part of the GT games, so usually just left that part alone.

To return to topic, i think the best crashes ever are guarenteed already, if they dont achieve that with BO5, then BO4 keeps its crown.
I remember putting on one of the BO games for the first time and ducking to avoid a car id just ploughed under :)
