Hello everybody, my first post :)
I was kinda wondering if everyone here using the XFPS could share their experiences with the different mouses they've been using?
I'm expecting my order to arrive tomorrow, and I have 3 mouses ready for testing (intellimouse explorer 3, the fatality one, and a laptop mini targun)
As far as I've read here at the forums the best mouse is the Targun USB optical ((Model # AMU10USZ)? This mouse is only for sale in the US.
Targun is realeasing a new mouse soon called AMU30EUZ, I was wondering if this could be the same as it is 800dpi. There are oslo several Targun mini mouses out there, are they any good?
Im planning on buying 5+ mouses and try them all to see which one works the best, here where I live you can return them and get your money back if you don't like them.
It would be nice to find the best mouse for this "primitive" thing, no offense =) :D
I'm really happy about this product, as much as I suck with a controller, I've thought giving up gaming just for this matter. Im left-handed and it is so hard for me to aim with the controller:/
Cheers =)

I've tried the following listed in order of working best:
1. Targus amu0301eu
2. Old logitech optical mouse
3. Microsoft Basic optical
4. Cheap no brand gaming lazer mouse - didnt work at all
they all had the issue where small mouse movements resulted in no in game movement at all.
Also my saitek eclipse keyboard didnt work via usb, having to use a ps2 keyboard. Also no ps2 mice worked for me.

This is what I have working well.
1)Logitech G5 931376-0403 6 Button 1x Wheel USB Wired Laser Mouse
2) A 3 year old white USB Microsoft optical mouse s/n 3902c693 that I had in my unused PC stuff box
3) Any Keyboard you have laying around will worked just fine.
What I could NOT get to work with the XFPS 360
1) Any Ball mouse
2) I also could not get any PS/2 mouse that "I had" to work with this.
3) Your run of the mil cheap-ass Logitech usb mouse. The sensitivity was just to low. It was a pain in the a$$ to aim.........Just to much lag.

@Fluffdaddy:
your Logi G5 really runs???
i tested these mice with GOW and halo2:
- Logitech G5 no, not playable
- Razer Diamondback no, not playable
- Logitech MX700 no, not playable
- Razer Boomslang (Ball)via USB yes, problem with short mousemovements
- MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 yes, problem with short mousemovements
- Dell Intellimouse 1.3A PS2(Ball) yes, problem with short mousemovements
- MS Intellimouse 1.1A PS2 no response at all
-MS Intelli Explorer USB (version 1.0 ?) yes, problem with short mousemovements
i think the problem is the deadzone of the 360 controller:
.....
i couldn't play nfs mw and nfs carbon with the 360 controller on PC, because there is no possibilty to drive straight forward without a special driver for the controller.

After unplugging and replugging the adapter several time with my MX510 plugged in, it does work, on occasion, but there is a major problem with small mouse movements, making sniping impossible, it actually makes me 100 times worse when playing FPS with this thing...

i test some other mice:
(in windows you can test it with xbcd setup util)
- HP (Logitech) UV96 yes
- Fujitsu Siemens (Logitech) UV69A yes
- Logitech MX518 no, same as G5
- MS IntelliMouse Optical 1.1A USB yes
- IBM MO28UOL yes
- Logitech Mouseman Wheel M-BA47 yes
hope that there will be a firmware update :
install with pc usb port in windows;

I'm assuming all of these have problems with small movement?
I know that its generally a given, due to the Deazone on the sticks, but I'm hoping there is a mouse out there that works well with this adapter.

Looks like there's no hope for it then. Props for all the testing you've done though! :D

From Radio Shack: Item: 2920873
Description: Microsoft® Intellimouse® Explorer Wired Mouse w/Tilt Wheel
Quantity: 1 @ $39.99
Works VERY well with the XFPS. And, it has 5 programmable buttons. The tilt scroll wheel left and right movment is not recognized but the scroll wheel press is.
I plan to mod the Smartjoy tomorrow using RayJay's awesome tips from this board. This mouse doesn't yet work with the Smartjoy option, but it will tomorrow!

Update, with the Smartjoy modified I have a wireless keyboard and mouse working very well. See Post 221 here: http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=40681&page=15
This mod will allow the use of most mice, since the real issue before wasn't all compatibility related as much as it was the lack of power. Some of the higher resolution laser mice may still be funky, but most of the optical mice work great. For this device, anything over 1000dpi resolution is overkill.
The control you get with the Smartjoy connected is superior to the standard XFPS config. There is only the slightest amount of lag, but truthfully, it isn't any worse than the standard xbox controller in my hands. As a PC gamer transitioning to the XBOX 360, this config is excellent.
And for the critics, the cost to maintain a PC that plays the games of today, compared to the steps it takes to get this working on a fixed cost system that plays games stunningly on a widescreen HD monitor, there really isn't much of a debate.

Plz explain what is good and bad on your test,not just say:yes or No or Working and Not working,more precision plz!!!!
Sting_NC_DSL you say the microsoft intellimouse at 39.99 work very well...thats mean?Perfect like a PC game?
Thanks to all.

It's about as close to perfect as you are going to get, but that statement comes with useage of a modded Smartjoy Frag. It really does work well.
If you don't need all the buttons, see if the MS Explorer 3000 feels OK to you. It works exactly like the one I mentioned, except it isn't as ergonomic and doesn't have as many buttons. I think it was $29, but I returned it after this new mouse came in. For only $10 more, the Microsoft® Intellimouse® Explorer Wired Mouse w/Tilt Wheel is a great investment.

Sometime in the next week, when all this crap arrives.
I'll be testing the MX510 USB Logitech in conjunction with a Dell QuietKey PS2 Keyboard. Using the XFPS 360 standard along with the Smart Joy Frag (voltage mod assuming I can find the directions to do it) Otherwise it will be the USB mod.

It appears that many newcomers are taking on this SJF+XFPS Combo. It also means many are going to ask the same questions over and over. How do you do this and how do you do that…and yada, yada. I think some guides will be in order, so here one that would help.
For those of, like me, that doesn’t think too greatly of modding the SJF. Whether you feel you paid too much, like to sell it later, or still uses it on the PS2 (like myself). You can always mod the USB cords instead. Granted, modding the SJF is much easier and faster, but I’m not willing to dedicate the SJF for only the XFPS. I believe some might feel the same way. This sharp idea was brought up by lui56.
The USB mod or USB Power-feed adapter
The USB mod is basically a power-feed adapter that you can make. When you connect a USB-to-PS/2 converter, the data will flow through. Unfortunately, most PS/2 outputs don’t supply sufficient power for a USB component. Therefore, we must find a way feed power to these USB components so they would work properly. That’s where this mod comes in. This mod is really quite simple. You will need to have a small understanding on using solder, flux, and heat-shrink tubing. You can always Google what you don’t understand and how things work. Google is your friend.
What you need:
1. 2 USB extenders
2. Soldering gun
3. Solder with flux
4. Heat-shrink tubing
5. Scissors
6. Lighter
7. Ruler
Note: feel free to take whatever shortcuts you like, after all it’s your adapter. Just be sure to make all the connections solid and nothing will unravel or come apart. That’s the main reason for using solder and heat-shrink tubes.
I’ll be using these 2 USB extenders that I got from the dollar store.
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd221/luis2626_photos/IMG00.jpg
Before you start slicing and dicing wires, make sure that one male-end USB cord is 3 inches longer than the other male-end USB. As for the female USB, it doesn’t matter. Just make sure you don’t make it too long like I did (oops).
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd221/luis2626_photos/IMG01.jpg
Now that you have the ideal length for the male-end USB cords, splice open so all the wires at the ends are exposed. Since you got 2 identical USB extenders, the ends should look identical. Almost all the USB cords use the same colors and the 2 thicker wires are usually the Red and Black.
1=Red=5volt
2=White= Data(-)
3=Green=Data(+)
4=Black=Ground
The longest male-end USB cord (the top one) will only need these 2 wires. Cut off the rest.
The shortest male-end USB cord (the middle one) will only need these2 wires. Cut off the rest.
The female-end USB cord keeps all four wires.
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd221/luis2626_photos/IMG02.jpg
Now prepare your wires for soldering. Twist the ends. Put some flux on the ends of the wire. With the soldering gun and solder, coat the wire ends of all the wires.
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd221/luis2626_photos/IMG03.jpg
Once the wires are coated with the solder you can clip them if you made them too long. Next, prepare the heat-shrink tubes. Make sure they are long enough to cover the exposed wires and areas that you want protected.
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd221/luis2626_photos/IMG04.jpg
Put the heat-shrink tubes on all the proper locations before soldering.
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd221/luis2626_photos/IMG05.jpg
Now solder together the remaining wires to the female-end USB
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd221/luis2626_photos/IMG06.jpg
Slip over the heat-shrink tubes and start shrinking them one by one till all are done. You don’t really need a heat-gun for the heat-shrink. You can use a lighter as long as you don’t keep it on spot too long. If you do, you melt right through.
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd221/luis2626_photos/IMG07.jpg
Before shrinking the heat-shrink tubing, you should have both male-end USBs facing the correct positions as if they were connected to the SJF+XFPS combo, if not you’ll find yourself having to twist the wires because they were in the wrong position to begin with.
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd221/luis2626_photos/IMG10.jpg
Let it cool a bit and you’re done. Happy gaming!:p

I tried this setup but couldn't get the G5 mouse to work. I did use a couple msft optical mice and it worked fairly well.
any ideas why the G5 laser wouldn't work ? I read that it pushes too much data for the ps/2 smartjoy port and it's only for usb. not sure but it would not light up.
anyways, I may try some other mice with this setup.. thanks again for posting these instructions. It's nice to have options...

I use an old hp ball mouse, old school but it works like a dream.Im pretty good(as in used to using-im not gonna brag about my lack of skill) with a controller, so im still becoming accustomed to keyboard and mouse, but it took me less than 5 mins before the advantages became clear. I use the controller in my left hand, and mouse in my right, the keyboard is only used when im fiddling with my sjf.

Hey all...
I'm selling the smartjoy frag, ps2 version on ebay... I have 100% feedback so no worries.
Item number: 290185752165
I ended up with two of these. Also this one has been modded. I removed the reducer? and soldered the posts as seen on this site.
this allows you to use more mice that require more power.
I highly recommend this for the xfps 360 setup. I've been averaging +20 or so on Halo 3 since I set this up.

I know that this is an old thread but I dont have enough posts to creat a new topico so...
I just bought the XFPS, and it turns out that i have 3 mouses and only 1 works. This one that works is really slow and the sensitivity is odd.
So i was wondering, from all this mouses wich one works the best? cause im going to buy it since i really like playing computer games and i suck with the joystic.
Thanks :D
