Seven PS3's Sitting in a Cage - Nobody Wants Them?

Here's an image of seven PS3 consoles sitting pretty in a cage at a Best Buy yesterday. Nobody wanted the sleek little black machines, will somebody fetch the violin?

There's 10 at the Gamestop down the road - nobody's buying them at $600, not even the scalpers anymore.

And nobody's going to get a $600 right after Christmas - unless they got a butt load of gift certificates, I guess.

wii hasn't been sold out in the stores at my city since launch, but if i drive 40 mins to orlando they are nowhere to be found

I was heading to the bookstore yesterday in Des Moines, IA. At the stoplight I see a sign sitting on the corner:
Playstation 3
*New*
Make Offer
(and the phone number)

So far I've been in 2 different Best Buys and a Wal-Mart store in the area. While I already have my PS3 I wanted to see if the stores had any in stock. I've not seen any yet. Though I've not peeked behind any customer service counters to see if they were back there.

I also noticed that in the Best Buy stores there were always 2 or 3 people just staring at the Wii demo reel. While I've not seen a PS3 demo kiosk actually on yet.

Okay... Can the news posters go out and find some useful information? I can't believe they are getting paid for this. It seems like every god damn thing that is put on the main page has to do with "PS3 losing an exclusive" or "I SAW A PS3 IN THE STORE LAWLS." This may be the worst video game news site on the planet for the fact that all of the people who post their findings are in the 10-15 year range and are obviously biased to certain consoles that they can't afford with their 5 dollar a week allowance.

I'm no fanboy and I could care less about which is better or which one sells more copies. Post some useful information that is actually valuable to the people who visit this damn site.

in the uk everyones seems to have resorted to 360s for christmas as wii's were well sold out but i tried to get a 360 few days ago and i struggled finally managed to get one had to drive 10 miles to get it mind worth it though

and plus its flashed now :-)

this is news. i don't know if you'd heard, but there's a console war going on. the pre-eminent leader, sony, has just stumbled and m$ is coming up behind them with a gears of war chainsaw and nintendo is trying to steal the kill by pulling out a wii-mote/nunchuck thing.

basically, sony stepped into the trap microsoft discovered on their first attempt. the best hardware doesn't always mean the best system. screw sales reports and console trackers, the best place to track the momentum and health of a new console is ebay. wiis are still selling on ebay at almost 100% markup, even after the christmas holiday. scalpers are *losing* money on the PS3. the xbox is selling roughly at cost.

sony didn't release great launch titles. scalpers are now returning their consoles to retailers. developers haven't really gone gangbusters over the ps3. they're expensive as hell in an economy that becomes more wintry and debt ridden by the minute.

nobody should sound sony's death knell, but these stumbles, combined with the other manufacturing gaffes uncovered at sony this year points to serious, SERIOUS problems with their company.

p.s. look at how many people visited this forum, obviously people are interested in this type of news.

i would love to find a 60 gb anywhere! that picture HAS to be a small town. or, lol, a best-buy worker that just but them in there when the store is closed for the night, I live in Jacksonville and i have not seen a PS3. i went around north Fla. and only found 20's. i wish.

Depends on the area, there are no PS3s in my area, but the fact of the matter is, in the areas that do have them, they aren't selling as "they should" if you know what i mean ;)!

i kinda like this kinds of news. ive been wanting to know what are people's reactions to the PS3. i took one back to walmart yesterday. it was the 20gb version. going to hold out for when i can get the 60 gb version. i like the machine. i like watching bluray movies on it. thats about it. i didnt buy any games for it tho. will have to wait and see how the games on that thing is going to be.

Exactly. Sony's strategy for this war is " Since we've been successful with the PS1 and the PS2, let's throw whatever the hell we want at consumers and call it the PS3. They're gonna buy simply because of the name." Tsk tsk. A shame for such a company that used to hand over quality and memorable games I enjoyed during my childhood.

No suprises here, with the fanboy rush over all that is left are the normal console buyers. These are people who either can't or won't pay that much for a games console. Parents especially are more likely to buy a cheap PC for the price of a PS3 which is, regardless of the blurb, just for games (until blueray players become dvd player cheap, they will remain an overpriced luxury). Thats why the Wii does so well, forget the wii-mote stuff, it's new and it's cheap, thats what sells it. Same goes for the Xbox 360, even with no nextgen competition it wasn't sold at an OTT rip off price (that in it's self can count alot from a psychological perspective). Even the PS2 is still selling really well, again because it's cheap not to mention it has a great back catalogue of games for it.

Regardless of the fact that the PS3 is a fantastic piece of kit, the attempt by sony to force a movie format into homes (and regardless of the "oh noes u r wrong, blu ray makes games so much better coz sony sed so" fanboy lines, that is what it is there for, just to push a movie format), may have been detrimental to both the PS3 and Blueray this time. Until the ps3 is released at the same price as the 360, i can see alot more stores looking like this.

No wonder so many previously exlusive titles are drifting away from sony, games publishers want to make money and when they see a console that is out of most peoples price range, they know exclusive titles for it are not going to be financially worth while, while it is so expensive.

i live in wainwright... a small town. yet, there is a walmart, and they have like 25 ps3's. i have 3 friends thta went to buy one, ended up buying a 360 instead because its not as expensive and they where able to obtain a few games. they where pleased and so am i with my 360. ps3 is just meh.

I went to a local Gamestop, and they have about 6 in stock. They think

nobody knows they have them in stock so the customers don't ask for PS3 or Wii. They also have 4

Wii gamesystems in stock, but sold out of Zelda!!!!

Who cares how much they cost. It does more than an 360! My buddy has a 360 and he bought one of those stupid HDDVD drives. What a waist of money. No games for it. I think he is going to trade it in. At least Sony said they will use the BluRay for games. I have Resistance, and it took forever to play. Just wait till next year.

The HD-DVD drive is for MOVIES - maybe you and your friend who don't 'care about the cost' should consider the purpose of a console/accessory before you spout off about its value or lack thereoff.

When your friend trades in his HD-DVD drive and loses half the value after what, two-three weeks, remember to check and see if the store you are at has any PS3s. Maybe he can trade up so you can back here and tell us again how great the Blue-Ray games are - oh wait, nevermind....

Lol what rubbish, they may have released the HD-DVD drive to compete with sony, but the fact remains that it is just an option for those that want it, not the "you must pay OTT price as we want you to have our new movie format, I mean games format you sucker, I mean valued sucker, oops I mean valued customer".

Lol again at the Blueray makes it HD wheras DVD doesn't, get a clue. The video hardware makes it hd not the staorage media. Both are hd, damn even the Wii can be hd if need be, the xbox and Ps2 had a few HD games so Blueray, doesn't make anything HD.

Resitance is OK, no Gears of War by any means, NBA I havn't seen, but then sports games usually look good on any system as unlike free roaming titles, they can focus all their graphic detail on 1 area. Face facts PS3 and 360 are graphically equall, as far as games go tho currently the PS3 blows.

DedDoa is totally right. its the system that makes the HD not the media. you can get a game that is next gen and hd on dvd. no games currently is even close to the 9gb limit of dvds yet. i had a PS3 but i returned it because there aren't any good games on it. and i watched a few bluray movies on it and my wife was like "ohh that was hd?? couldnt tell the difference." so i decided to return it till i can get a PS3 at a better price or maybe when they bundle it with something next christmas.

Schaumburg, IL (Largest city outside of Chicago) BestBuy has PS3's in stock. Limited supply of 360's and no Wii's for weeks. Asked a rep about the PS3, said just like the psp sales, people would rather buy a PS2 before a PS3 or psp. DS Lites are out of stock as well. Very hot.
