View Full Version : Battle of PS3 & Wii Browsers - Both Too Limited
Victor Godinez of the Dallas Morning News has checked out the just how successful the PS3 and Wii browsers are. Godinez comes to the conclusion that both both are a little but of late night fun BUT are currently just too limited. They are in no state to replace PC browsing but we shouldn't complain as they are FREE currently!
BOTTOM LINE: The PS3 and Wii browsers are kind of fun to play with when you're done gaming and want to goof off for a few minutes before calling it a night. But both browsers are too limited right now to replace anyone's PC. And it's particularly surprising to see Nintendo, the company that claims it only cares about gaming and has no interest in making a multimedia machine, jump into this space. But hey, you can't complain about getting free stuff.

Well considering you can get full firefox capabilities with the PS3 when running linux... so PS3 has 2 browsers (more if you want to download others in linux) and wii has one limited browser... so what?

Would I be correct in guessing that the browsers are part of the kernel, and not a separate app entirely? If so, they may not have had much choice but to make it limited, since only a fraction of the full memory can be devoted to it. It is the kind of thing that can be improved upon with browser updates, at least.

They're free so whos complaining plus they're better than Internet Explorer, I can imagine XBOX 360 having a browser, would be sooo loosey based round IE lol

I don't think anyone'll ever be giving up their computers and web browsing on their consoles... There's just waaay too many features that either *can't* be implimented on a console due to hardware restrictions or *aren't practical* to impliment on a console due to them just not being practical...
I've now been using the Wii browser, and I find it very competent, and kinda fun... Sure, it doesn't match a fullblown Firefox on PC, w/ all the other internet apps that go along w/ a fullfledged PC, but being able to pull up a video on youtube or check a news site w/out turning on the PC is kinda handy & fairly quick...
Now, if only there was support for USB keyboards, specifically a mini-wireless keyboard, you'd be all set, and be able to browse much faster, though the built-in keyboard & word-typeahead feature is very competent...

The ps3 browser is rather limited and slow, but i do use it pretty frequently.
It does actually take a wireless usb kb and mouse, i know because i use them myself. No driver installationr or anything, recognized straiht out of the box. Annoying thing about it is that it only seems to recognize keypresses on a-z, shift, and 0-9. We desperately need a backbutton shortcut , and others, on the keyboard. WIthout it, we still need the sixaxis to get full functionality out of the browser.
