View Full Version : PS3 Sells over a Million Units, Wii Supersizes that and More at 2.5 Ml
Despite all the supply problems, the PS3 seems to have sold over a million units according to VG Charts. The Wii has also done incredibly well in such a short period of time racking up almost 2.5 million units sold!

I just got home from Best Buy and they had at least 40 PS3s stacked up in Customer Service. No Wiis in stock. I'm sure they will sell out but they certainly aren't "flying" off of the shelves. Happy Holidays everyone.

What is the source of these numbers? I visit www.nexgenwars daily and the numbers are quite different. I also read somewhere last week MS$ needed to sell 1.3 million 360s to hit 10 million by the end of 2006.

I too wouldn't trust those numbers, they sound more like the numbers your get from nintendo and sony PR as end of year goals.
Nexgenwars is as accurate and up to the minute as it gets.

Actually isn't MS try to hit 10 million by the end of March? (the end of their business year).

nextgen wars is way off, vg has seemed better, but i wonder if the PS3 has really sold 1 million. even if they have gotten that many out i have been to three different stores the last couple days and they all had PS3's in stock and said they had them for a while and no one was buying them, one store had 4 units and it was just a fred meyers. doesn't seem people are willing to fork over $500-$600 for a console plus cables, extra controllers, games etc.

Probably near a million for PS3s as MotorStorm as been released in Japan and its the best seller in Japan, but all depends on what Sony says in a statement.

haven't you gotten banned or graduated gradeschool yet?
also motorstorm isn't the best selling game in japan from what i read, only the best selling PS3 game, it has sold 8 thousand last reported. so maybe the best selling in a day, but i highly doubt best selling for a week.

Yeah must have got best selling PS3 game mixed up with Japanese Best Seller :D Oopsie! Thanks for the correction hehe!
And Nimbus, its gonna take more than a Shite Firmware and a $600 to own the Computer Game Market.
It might want to.
1. Allow worldwide gamers to play Universal PSone/PS2 games on PS3 via FW Update, this would generate more sales and pull people away from modding.
2. Ship more games, many of the games are on other consoles like XBOX 360 which is the cheaper alternative.
3. Make the console cheaper, makes gamers happier and generates more sales.
4. Get more consoles out for shipping!!! Sony need to stop having them in limited numbers.
5. Give the PS3 many more features via FW Update(s) to give it a cutting edge againest its competition.
6. Keep hold of exclusives like MGS4 and others, otherwise they'll just get the XBOX 360 version hence less sales.
7. Improve the PlayStation Network
8. Give the PSP fricking access to the PlayStation Store without a PLAYSTATION 3, people want PSone games on the PSP but don't have the main requirement!!!
9. Don't delay it in Europe again!! Will make people angry if delay occurs again, will make me angry lol.
10. Look at Number 1, many people want it and UPSCALING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well thats what I think anyway!

1 million is about right if you guys think about it because alot of people bought the ps3 to resell. Now here's another thing, after the ps3 craze they kept on sending out ps3s and MANY people still bought them to try to ebay them thinking it would go for 1000 dollars. After they get jacked and get 10 dollars under what they bought it for they all just went and returned it to walmart or where ever. So the ones they bought and returned still count.
Now people think not alot of people did this but you're wrong. Just go look at cheapassgamer and craigslist and see how many people are asking for 1000 dollars for their ps3s and ending up returning it.

one of my biggest problems with the PS3 besides not liking blu ray because we don't know how the format wars is going to end. according to alot of stuff i have seen evd is coming out next year and is going to be the media of choice to replace dvd. but who knows, is kinda interesting though. back to my point though. sony has always hated prices drops, and based on the percentage of there biggest price drop from day console came out to the day the next gen console came out, the cheapest the PS3 could ever get is $287. thats more expensive than a Wii the day it came out and only $13 cheaper than a 360 core console. so when the PS4 comes out the PS3 could still be $300, thats not cool with me. so something has to give. because i have only gotten a $300 console once, and it wasn't me that bought it, it was a PS2 i got for Christmas. thats the most my parents ever spent on me, ever. every parent i have seen ask about PS3's price was shocked and asked about another console, or just left the store after they heard and got over the shock, and they leave without saying a word. doesn't seem like the PS3 is friendly to casual gamers or parents giving gifts, thus eliminating most of those that had a PS2.

Is the 360 only $300!?!
Flipping hell!!!!
They're planning to sell the PS3 for £425 here (60GB) (I'm hoping to god its £399.99) and thats £145 dearer than the XBOX 360. Then if you add the HD-DVD which is I believe £120, thats near the PS3 Estimated Retail Price for the U.K.
The good thing about 360 is that you have the option and time to upgrade. With Sony's PS3, its more like everything is there which is a good thing for some gamers, but for those with less cash its a bit of a problem. The PS3 hardly needs any extras apart from the extra controllers, Memory Card Adaptor and HDMI cables.
If you say is right about 360 being £300, thats a huge gap compared to the U.K Pricing!!! No wonder its selling **** all in America.
Yeah, I've noticed that with the Mums and Dads while I am at work, I'll mention the 360 or PS3 and they're just interested in the Wii. Sony need to listen to their fans and gaming community if they are going to do well with the PS3.
The PlayStation 2 is still going to be around for a while, funny if that outsells everything thats next gen lol
I'm honestly not that bothered about the PS3s price, I'd be happy at £399.99 for a 60GB PS3, I can understand the Blu Ray being in there but I really didnt fancy importing it after playing my mates Japanese one. I'm actually glad its delayed now, theres not many games which are grabbing my attention on PS3 apart from Formula 1, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, DMC4, MGS4, MotorStorm, Gran Turismo, Tekken 5:DR HD and Armoured Core 4.
It needs that family gaming it has like Buzz, SingStar, Eye-toy related games which ships loads of PS2s on the PS3 and give the console a huge audience like the PS2 did.
My parents have bought me for Birthdays and Christmas' a Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, Nintendo 64 and a Sega Dreamcast. If I asked my mum for a PS3 for my Birthday or as a Xmas Present, she'd tell me to get lost if she looked at the price so daps83777 does make a valid point.

This is true that we still dont have a definitive winner with bluray and HD but i have a feeling bluray will win in the end because for me anyways i see alot more bluray commercials than hd. Bluray promotes movies, the ps3, and the psp which is a tripple whammy. I'm like everyone here I hope someone wins the format war soon because if both thrive we all lose.
EDIT:
Just fyi for everyone the past few weeks it has been relatively easy to find a ps3 especially in my area. Seems like once the ebay craze is over it hasn't been really flying off the shelves that quickly anymore.

problem is there are next to none blu ray players on the market, sure the PS3 has one, but other than that you have very few options. also Blu ray players are way more expensive than hd-dvd players. also people hear the word dvd in hd-dvd and think it is the logical upgrade. and with evd coming out it makes things even more interesting.
but when it comes down to it, people are still upgrading from vhs to dvd, people aren't adopting hd as quickly as people are thinking. even hdtv sales are as impressive as people make you think, the actual adoption rate is fairly small for people that have hdtv's compared to sdtv's. in the USA dvd has just passed vhs as being in more homes, so when people are still adopting dvd why would they want to adopt something new again, they wouldn't.

Your argument is very true in every aspect. This will be very interesting to see where hd and bluray end up. As for cost I think bluray will adapt to hd prices pretty quickly. Just a few months ago or even less bluray burners were 900 dollars I just checked yesterday at frys electronics they're now only 499. AHHAHHAHAA yea "only 499" hahaha.

That is true, but theres also another part to it... Blu-ray players can play DVD's without the need of a combo setup. So as time goes on and bluray players become more available, people arent going to get screwed out of their old collection of dvd's. For now choosing a bluray or hddvd player gives y ou an extra option from your dvd's. Onces one or the other becomes a more apparent victor in the BR/HDDVD war, the adoption rate will be much quicker becuase of readiness, backwards compatibility with dvds, cost, and availability will become better.
Once that happens it just comes down to your dvd player breaking and going to the store and go hmm should i get a 50 dollar dvd player thats going to break in a few months or this one that i can play hd movies on along with my dvds

the problem with your argument is that the hdtv adoption rate isn't that high, and people that don'e have hdtv's aren't going to buy an hd media based player such as hd-dvd or blu ray. so even if every hdtv owner bought into one of them the adoption rate would be incredibly small.

one gamecrazy i went to a few days ago had 4 too, but being 2 days before christmas most people who had one ordered, or waiting to get one prolly gave up and spent the money on other things. the 4 sat there for 24hrs but were gone the next day.
they had almost no systems after those ps3s sold, no gba/ds/dslite/psp/ps2/ps3/wii/gc, but they had 40 new 360s. we were all pretty shocked they diddnt have gbas.
same story goes for the past few times ive been to best buy, no wii/ps3 but tons of 360s.

I remember the guy on that signature was once presidentof Sony, after the Sony failure, PSP going down, Ps3 scandals, low profie, he was slashed from teh backs by his own company  . They said "seat there and be quiet"..sure he couldn't hold and say stupid thigns like making a "gold Ps3" more expenssive and more elite..
Still, about the numbers ( 1 million Ps3 ????), I see Ps3 being reselled , more than going to end user :D While Wii, is catch and play...who wants to return a wii after playing at home with others?;)

The Wii's and the 360's have already been released Worldwide. I don't think this chart is that fair since the Ps3 still hasn't made a European, Australian debut. Expect a big spike in the Ps3's numbers come March.
If you take out the 0.62m from the Wii's "other", it'll have 1.86m compare to 1.01 of the Ps3's. It's still pretty close.

I was just using the numbers that chart gave, and is that chart counting the number of return systems probably not.
Yes, I know that a lot of Ps3's were returned, but I think that number is vastly exaggerated. No, the Ps3's aren't making $1000's profits on Ebay anymore, but it's still all being sold at a profit.

I know what you mean, specially people that are buying from outside the USA region, on coutnries with NTSC system ( South america) , and even europe. But while this price is some elitist, will take a long time to PS3 becoem massive. Maybe 1.5 year

I imagine there will be a spike in sales when the PS3 hits the European and Australian markets, but I somehow doubt it'll be large enough to narrow the gap any considerable amount. A lot of the hype for the PS3 has died down already, and those who can't legally buy PS3s in their own markets yet have already gotten wind of it. That, combined with the PS3 being the only console this launch to not get a simultaneous worldwide release (causing some previous Sony loyalists to feel slightly slighted), might reduce the number of sales which would occur otherwise.
