Well on updates it clearly says in the manual how to [properly] proceed with install.
Sorry that you had that data wiped

I could give a **** about what manual says... system update is a FIRMWARE updated within the ps3 chipset... the memory card data is stored individualy on an independent hard drive.. The update should not be able to touch its content what so ever during update. Eck even my ps1 virtua card is fine but not ps2. This is defenitely a bug.

Its not a bug ..its required to flush data of [possible] exploits.
I am sorry for your loss of lots of hours saved

Considering how fast Sony is updating the PS3 firmware, they must have found a lot of room for exploits. It would appear that there was a strong benefit to getting the PS3 at launch after all, for those interested in piracy. I wonder if there'll be restrictions added on to Linux as a result, since it was used to copy PS3 and blu-ray movie game data.
