View Full Version : 4gb mem sticks running slow?
Was wondering if anyone here has experienced of have heard reports of
4gb memory sticks running slow. Slow as in transfering files onto the memory stick and even games becoming laggy or jerky?
I ask this cause i am experiencing this problem. Copying and deleting files onto the mem stick seems slower than usual. at least slower than my 2gb mem stick. I've also noticed that when i play pro evo soccer 6 and lumines the games become laggy/jerky. Both these games are > 1gb in file size. I have not experienced this issue with games that are smaller in file size....
I recently just bought this 4gb Sony mem stick and have formatted it via the psp menu option and then basically copy and pasted my files from my 2gb stick to this one.
any suggestions / help???

Well, I've heard that the sony sticks are slower performers than the sandisk sticks. I haven't had any problems with my 4gb sandisk pro duo.

i'm experience the same problems as you sek. i recieved my 4gb sony mem stick duo II last week. transferred stuff from my 1gb stick onto it and almost every game i've tried so far is laggy as hell and the transfer rate seems slow. its particularly noticable in games that stream like gta:vcs, and movie sequences like ace combat x/tekken.
any information would be appreciated before i take this piece of **** back

i have a sandisk pro duo 4gb memstick and the games mentionned (pes6 [cso], gta [iso! cso lags, but with a ripkit its pretty small and it's worth it], ace combat x[i think it was cso]) are all working great. i had a 1gig sony memstick before and i didn't mention any slowdowns with the 4gig while copying data etc.
i heard, that sony memsticks are less fast than sandisk (rumors, i also heard that the transparent gaming edition of the sandisk memsticks are slower than the normal pro duos but who knows ) but i also heard of faked (sony) memsticks from ebay etc. which are really crappy so be careful where you buy it.

Hi everyone,
I just had a SONY MEMORY STICK Pro Duo (High Speed) 4GB and i'm having some trouble to launch games, from devhook 0.51 or 271 SEC, when i transfer Iso's or Cso's from my PC to ms0:/ISO folder, i can't see the games on the PSP, it's like i did not copy anything at all, sometimes when i copy only one iso, i can see the game in the psp, but when i try to launch it, i got a black screen or the psp just block. When i try to copy a MOVIE in ms0:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01\ i see a corrupted icon file...
So i do exactly the same manipulation on my 1GB memory stick and every work completely fine, any suggestion ?

For game, you revolve modifing Cpu speed (For Ex 333 Mhz)
For Video playback, or Mp3, heavy and long, I think there is no anything to do.:(

Reason is PSP reads/writes slower on FAT32 but reads/writes faster on FAT16. 2GB is formatted to FAT16 by default and 4GB is formatted to FAT32 by default.
To increase your 4GB MS speed just like your previous 2GB, you need to format it as FAT16. Now, before you flame me saying 2GB is max for FAT16, you need to research more. However, 4GB FAT16 is not compatible with lower Windows versions (Win95/98/Me/MSDos) but is perfectly compatible with PSP and WinNT and WinXP. This is due to Microsoft hardcoded max cluster to 32k on Win95/98/Me/MSDos but they changed it on WinNT/XP to max cluster of 64k.
To format your 4GB to FAT16...
1. Go to Start Menu->Run...

NephilimNX's thing worked. It's cutting minutes off my transfer time on my 4GB, and it still says I have all my space. In-game, it cuts a few seconds off of load times, too. I don't know if it fixes game lag, since I never had lag in the first place.
To check the memory pro duo format, go into USB mode with the pro duo in and go into My Computer. On the list of drives, click the one connected to your memory pro duo, and on the left side, under details, it will say "File System", and that's it.
Thanks for the tip, NephilimNX.

Exactly! I had the same problems with my High Speed 2GB Sony and 4GB Ultra II Sandisk.
But I formatted my Sticks by using the function offered directly in my PSP menu.
So I think you should be good to go if you format your Sticks with your PSPs and delete all the unnessecary folders.

So yesterday i found out something interesting in another forum, i think it's psp-hack, "if you want to check if your MS is a fake, go to the memory stick on your psp, push TRIANGLE>information> and if it's write "SUPPORTED" next to Magic Gate, that means it's not a fake, and if it's "UNKNOWN" it's a fake"
So i checked with my MS and this seems to work, unfortunately for me my 4GB is "Unknown" ... :(

Despite the FAT format really sorting the stick out in terms of speed (it was unuseable)... the stick now randomly corrupts files and folders...

Yes but PSP *always* formats your 4GB to FAT32 for the reason of compatibility to Win9x. But if you are using WinXP, then I recommend formatting it to FAT. The increased speed is worth a try.

Win9x (Win95/98/Me) can't read all storage that is 4GB and FAT16. Microsoft hardcoded the OS' max cluster to 32k. WinNT/XP changed max clusters from 32K to 64K that's why it can read 4GB/FAT16 properly. Unless your not using your MS pro duo on Win9x, I suggest formatting it to 4GB/FAT16 so PSP can read/write faster on it.

i've been following this thread for a few days now and yesterday i formatted my 4gb Pro Duo to FAT16 as suggested and it did seem a bit faster copying ISOs and also GTA wasn't laggy anymore.
my 4gb pro duo is a not a high speed version and i bought it for £30 from ebay. the seller was from the UK and says they are genuine but on my PSP it says magicgate is unsupported.
I would like to know if anyone has seen a 'high speed' 4gb pro duo made by SONY as i can't see them anywhere and thought only sandisk made high speed ones.
I would also like to know how long it takes people to fill a 4gb stick. It takes me about 30 mins with the PSP plugged into USB2 port.

I can do all the transfer i want ISOs or MOvies whatever, transferring is fast, but i always get corrupted files(movies) or i transfer like 3 ISOs (games) and i can only see one on the PSP, and even the one i'm seeing when i launch it i get a black screen and nothing happen, after that i have to reboot manually
Maybe its yur CFW causing issues!
Maybe, I don't know, i don't think so cause i have a 1GB SONY MS and everything is fine with it

Okay... I formatted my 4GB sandisk II to Fat using what was mentioned in this thread due to the fact that my stick had a couple of symptoms after upgrading to 3.03 OE-B
- Justice league heroes suddenly had lag
-XMB took a couple of seconds just to show the amount of free space
So i'm happy to say that the format solved my problem...
But here's the problem....I also use Mac and I just found out the hard way that OSX won't read fat drives......
Anybody got a solution to this...? Maybe a way to partition the stick??????

I recently bought two "No-Name" 4GB MSDUO-Pro's cheap from internet here in Germany. They both work OK, though a lot slower than my previous "Sony" HighSpeed 2GB DUO-Pro's. I use one in my Sony DSC-H5 camery and one in my PSP.
I formated my 4GB MSDUO-Pro with Fat16 and it didn't have the slightest effect!! It has the exact same write time as Fat32!!! So I don't know what you guys have been doing to make it go faster, maybe I've got a different batch which has the same write speeds for Fat16/32!! No noticeable difference!!
Here is a little comparison I made between my "No-Name" 4GB MS DUO-Pro and my "Sony" HighSpeed 2GB DUO-Pro:
Transfer 1,41GB ISO Datei von PC auf PSP
Sony 2GB = 6 Minuten 34 Sekunde
No-Name 4GB = 16 Minuten 22 Sekunde
Transfer 53MB Datei von PC auf PSP
Sony 2GB = 1 Minuten 29 Sekunde
No-Name 4GB = 3 Minuten 10 Sekunde
So there we have it, the "No-Name" 4GB MS DUO-Pro has a writing speed of around 1.5MB/s which is exactly the same as the SanDisk 4GB MSDUO Gaming Edition!!

There is definitely a large speed difference between 2GB and 4GB DUO cards (see my tests on the last page) 2 GB's are about 2.5x faster than 4GB cards. Which sort of half defeats the object of having bigger capacity cards

I did as NephilimNX suggested and it works great:). I'm a little disappointed that there's still little lag in GTAVS and other "heavy" games, for example: Need for Speed: Carbon:confused:. But still, there is still improvement in alround preformence.
I guess there will be no better solution. It's kinda weird having lag on a console, cause all the games are built specifically for this console, which means all games should run flawlessly on the console.

[PerformanceIndex 2.69]
FAT32:
[PerformanceIndex 2.85]
Not bad for a cheapo no-name card, same as an 4GB Sony DUO.
My year old fake "Sony" 2GB DUO Highspeed:
[PerformanceIndex 7.78]

whats blackspeed? Is it free?
I use nero to tst:
Goto prefs, cache, and hit test drive speed, it then gives out a number in KB/s or Kb/s, I think Kb/s...
That option was made to find out how fast each drive is if u wanna use it for yur Nero cache, but I can test anything for other purposes too!

:( Hey Guys,
I reformatted the stick with FAT 16 using the instructions on this thread, however, when I try to put ISOs on the stick, they won't show up as games. I make the ISO folder in the root and I put CSOs ISOs but neither work. I even tried POPS, but they didn't work either. I have 3.03 OE-C. I got this to work b4, but when I reformatted and recreated the ISO folder, it doesn't work anymore. ANYONE KNOWWHAT ISWRONG?

I think this is a little bug or something...
btw: I have a fake Sony 4gb Memcard (they said it's high speed...lol...) and this are my results:
FAT32: 3.05
FAT16: 3.28

Does it have "high speed" printed on it? Otherwise it's a normal black one!! Look at this picture for a "true" Sony high speed

Thanks guys,
It helped and now my ISOs show up again. I have another question though. How do you get VCS cheatdevice 2.3 to work without DEvhook? Like I said, I have 3.03 OE-C, so I was wondering if I could just place the prx into the seplugins folder. Does anyone know if this would work?

I think the benchmarks show, that sandisks 4gb are faster than the sonys...If I bought a 4gb MS Pro Duo, I would buy me a Sandisk....

Get Sandisk? are they cheaper?
yes (at least at amazon in my country a sandisk 4gb ms pro duo is cheaper than one from sony), and they are faster. (and fake ones are mostly slower [bad for large isos/videos] and break faster)

Lotta fakes claim to be high speed, ironic how they are slower!
Also my MS is MG supported but slow, my 2GB shows up way slower than the samples in Black Speed, my brothers 512MB either comes close, equals and for one of the tests beats the sample for the 1GB!

if i format my fake 4gb ms to fat, no transferd data show up in psp xmb :( ideas? also format says 64kb cluster isnt safe, cant change that!
edit:
okay, if i try changing the cluster size to 16 or 32kb it will format only to
fat32! so i think the 64kb for fat is the right thing, it must be some other
error

Do you have set the right folder-structure?
You have to create a PSP\GAME and a PSP\GAME150 folder, in order to see your isos...imho a little bug or something...

Format your MS-DUO (preferably FAT16) and it'll be as good as new again!!!

hardly ever is there real damage, just data loss, and I think Sony has a free things to recover data, but if u have ISOs and homebrews, then giving Sony ur MS may not be the best idea, when my USB hard drive F@#$ed up I took it to staples and for $60 they recovered most of my data and didnt care dat I had warez!!
