View Full Version : Sony Files Patent for Wii Remote Type Device
Sony has filed a patent for a Wii remote type device which will allow for on-screen pointing. The patent application even states "A receiver portion including one or more sensor units located in or near the target area." This sounds like a sensor bar!

No, you don't understand. Sony invented this 10 years ago but felt we weren't ready for it, but now they think the world is ready and decided to file the patent. At least that's what they'll say 2 years from now. Well that, and that Nintendo stole their idea, like rumble and analog sticks.

who knows? Maybe sony is going to switch to a more powerful sensory based controller. They've comepletely switched controller types before.
Anyone remember when the PS1 was out and about halfway through its lifespan they switched from normal controllers to dual shock 1's?
They can't be trying to make money off of nintendo's sales (though that would have been genius) because nintendo already patented their sensor bar and wiimote.

In a word: Lame...
Even if they have already patented a similar technology years ago, anyone can plainly see they intended to do nothing with it, until Nintendo suddenly started outdoing them in sales with that type of technology... What can Sony do to combat this, except try to brush the dust off that technology, and try to come up with some niche games to use a similar type of controller, and say "See, we can do that kind of thing too"... My prediction is that by the time Sony tries a stunt like that, and gets it in place and implimented, enough time will have pass that Nintendo will have a new console out to rival the PS3, capitalizing on the cash flow the Wii is constantly generating...

More importantly, I think the idea of "nique style controller" hits it on the head. Right now, the Wiimote and nunchuck comes with the Wii, and save for the virtual console controller, you're done - don't buy anything else.
This for Sony would be like Eyetoy - a nice idea, but because you have to lay down more bones, people are less likely to get it for that 1 or 2 games that require it, unless they make it *really* good like Guitar Hero - but that's if they're lucky.
More than anything else, this is a "defensive" patent - there just in case some numnuts tries to sue Sony, they can whip this out and go "Neener - we already own that!"

If Sony really is making a "Sensor" bar, it won't work like thw Wii. The Wii bar is a transmitter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumble_Pack Hmmm... don't read something about Sony
Also as for the analog Stick http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog_stick The N64 was the first with the control stick, what sony has done with the flight stick is a huge difference. As for the article, Atari was the first so Sony also "stole" that from Atari. but the use of the Analog Stick is complete not the same as for the Flight Stick and for the N64.

N64 was the first to have a fully 3d game, first with rumble and anolog sticks. WTH are you talking about? When did sony invent this ten years ago?

Let me defend havok here...... guys have you ever heard of sarcasm????? or are you being sarcastic on top of havok's obvious sarcasm???
Anywho, good for sony, I would hope that they do something interesting with this, though I really doubt that this will happen during the PS3's life. Actually they better come up with some worth while games on that $600 BD-Music player/Linux box/game console/etc/etc/etc oh and I hear it's also supposed to be a game console :D

typical sony bullshit. Making their own shitty patents (copying everything on the way there) over anything looking to bring money down the drain JUST in case they need it some day. Then, they will be "OH but we HAD the patent since WII launched". And every fanboy then will believe that they actually had the patent even BEFORE the wii.
Then kaz & co will some day announce a "new" and "Exciting" way to play or to put it better a "breakthrough" in gaming, since apart from a remote, it will be elastic as well. So, not only do you get a pointing device as good as sony can build (=bad), you can also be sure you wont break anything in the process of playing.
And all for 999.9999$ including Brown-tard player, separately available for 1879.99$!
There is a sinister plan in overpricing blue ray players vs ps3. This either means they are pricing standalone players too much to favor the black brick in anyones eye, or that the build quality of the ps3 is extremely lower to justify the price. :D

LMFAO I think to avoid any more confusion we should use sarcasm tags like <sarcasm> </sarcasm> or *sarcasm* *sarcasm ends* anyways I think if sony gets anywere with this type of device for the alredy in market PS3 will be quite interesting, that is if they have some nice software for it from third-party not just sony themselves like most of the time

But the specs for it were kept under wraps, I don't know what's the big deal with patents though, I though almost everybody here would agree that even a retarded monkey can make a patent.
