This guide explains what firmwares you can downgrade and how to tutorials to downgrade them.
You need a certain firmware that is on the PSP to run the back-up games off the memory stick. Currently there are numerous ways to use back-up games on the PSP via memory stick. You need a 1.5 firmware PSP to run games that are downloaded. I will explain what firmwares you can downgrade to 1.5 and various ways to check if you have the correct firmware.
HOW TO SEE WHAT FIRMWARE YOU HAVE:
Look at the sticker on the box when you are buying your PSP:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f100/NeilR_QJ/psp_version.jpg
no letter = 1.0 (Japanese Release) 1.5 (North-American release) confirmed
A = 1.5 confirmed
B = 1.51 confirmed
C = 1.52 confirmed
D = 1.52 confirmed
E = 1.52 confirmed
F = 2.0 confirmed
G = 2.01 confirmed
H = 2.50 confirmed
I = 2.60 confirmed
J = 2.70 unconfirmed
K =2.71 confirmed
L = 3.00 confirmed
If you find a "A" on the box, which is unlikely, buy it as you would not need to downgrade it. If you do not find a "A" then you would need to downgrade your PSP so you can play booted games.

WHAT FIRMWARES YOU CAN DOWNGRADE AND HOW TO TUTORIALS:
Guide from firmware 2.00 to 1.50 :
Step 1: Download the downgrader from here : http://www.psp-hacks.com/downloads/MPHDowngrader.zip
Then make sure you get a copy of the original 1.5 firmware upgrader. I found my copy here.
Step 2: Connect your PSP to your computer via USB. On your memory stick, create a folder called UPDATE inside /PSP/GAME/ and place the EBOOT.PBP file from the 1.50 update inside this UPDATE folder.
Step 3: Unzip MPHDowngrader.zip. Drop overflow.tif into your /PSP/PHOTO/ folder. Put both h.bin and index.dat in the root of your Memory Stick.
Step 4: Disconnect your PSP from your computer and plug in the AC adapter.
Step 5: Navigate to Photo then Memory Stick via the PSP's menu system and start scrolling down through your photos until you reach the overflow.tif picture.
You'll know you've hit it when everything freezes and you get a black screen with a bunch of white text output.
If your PSP freezes without going to this black text screen, then hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the PSP shuts down, then hit the power button again to start it back up. Repeat this step until you get that black screen.
Step 6: Don't panic. Hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the PSP powers off. Hit the power button again. Your PSP will start up, and if you navigate to your System Information, you'll discover that your PSP thinks it is running version 1.0 of the firmware. It isn't and you cannot run homebrew (yet).
Step 7: Navigate to Game-->Memory Stick, hit the X button, and navigate to the 1.5 updater. Make sure you have your PSP plugged in or the upgrade won't work. Click the X button and update like you normally would. At the end of the upgrade you will receive an error saying that the upgrade failed and to contact Sony. Don't panic. Ignore this and again force your PSP to power off and reboot.
Step 8: After the PSP reboots you will receive an error screen that is scary and confusing because it is in multiple languages. Don't panic. Find the language you can understand and read the corresponding line. It notes that your preferences are fragged and that you need only hit the O button to restore some default-ish settings. Hit the O button.
Step 9: The PSP will start back up and you will go through the initial setup like the day when you first bought your PSP. Do so and then go to the system info pane again, where you will see that you are rocking version 1.5. Run homebrew at will.

YOU PERFORM THIS DOWNGRADE AT YOUR OWN RISK - YOU UNDERSTAND
THAT IT MIGHT BREAK ("brick") YOUR PSP.
This downgrade will allow you to update your PSP's firmware from 2.5 or 2.6
back to 1.5. Why do you want to do this? Simple - firmware 1.5 allows you
to run homebrew directly from the memory stick.
YOU PERFORM THIS DOWNGRADE AT YOUR OWN RISK - YOU UNDERSTAND
THAT IT MIGHT BREAK ("brick") YOUR PSP.
Things you'll need:
1. Downgrade File Package: http://www.sendmefile.com/00424397
2. The current firmware version of your PSP
3. A copy of GTA:Liberty City (see below)
4. Your PSP, a NON TA-082 version
5. Your PSP's power cable
6. This pack
7. About 15-30 mins, depending on how handy you are with this kinda stuff.
Item 1 (firmware version) can be found by using your PSP's menus and
checking the PSP system information. You must have firmware 2.5 or 2.6.
Item 2 is needed to begin the downgrade process. We use an option in
GTA:LCS to start the downgrader. You only need GTA:LCS once for a few
minutes, so if you don't have a copy you can rent one from your local
video store.
Item 3 is essential. A JPG is included in this archive. Make sure your
PSP is NOT a TA-082. If it is this downgrade WILL NOT WORK - running it
WILL break your PSP.
Item 4 is essential - if your PSP runs out of battery during the downgrade
you'll probably break it forever. Keep it plugged into the mains.
Item 5 is, well, doh. This pack should contain the following things:
- This readme
- A JPG showing a TA-082 version PSP
- A folder called DOWNDATER EBOOT, inside which is EBOOT.PSP
- A folder called DOWNDATER, inside which is:
- inputfl.bin and outputfl.bin
- A folder called DUMP (211 files, 10 folders inside)
- A folder called PRX (7 files inside)
- An executable called eloader097.exe
- A folder called 2.6 EBOOT UPDATE, inside which is EBOOT.PSP
Please make sure you have all of the following before continuing.
THE DOWNGRADE PROCESS
---------------------
YOU PERFORM THIS DOWNGRADE AT YOUR OWN RISK - YOU UNDERSTAND
THAT IT MIGHT BREAK ("brick") YOUR PSP.
Part 1 - Set up the ELoader
1. If you do not already have the ELoader installed, we must install
this first (if you currently use homebrew you already have it).
Simply connect your PSP to your PC then run the eloader097.exe
setup. This will walk you through the setup, it's very simple.
2. Once the ELoader has been installed, confirm it works. Reset your
PSP and boot your GTA:LCS game. Go through the menus and go to
the "Load Game" option. You should see a "Superbock Eloader"
entry in your saved games list. Select it and wait. After a
minute or so the ELoader will appear. Do not continue until
you can see this Eloader (it's obvious what it is).
3. We only need to check that the ELoader is working, so that's it.
Reset your PSP and connect it to your PC again. If your PSP
has firmware 2.6, skip down to "Begin the downgrade". If your
PSP has firmware 2.5, continue reading. If your PSP has any
other firmware, STOP RIGHT NOW - THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT UPDATE
FOR YOU.
Part 2 - Update your firmware
4. Strangely it's better to go forwards before going backwards.
We need to update the firmware from 2.5 to 2.6. To do this
copy the "2.6 EBOOT Update" folder into your PSP's memory
stick, in the PSP/GAME/ folder. Eg: if your PSP has been
assigned G: by Windows, copy "2.6 EBOOT Update" to
"G:\PSP\GAME\2.6 EBOOT Update".
5. Disconnect your PSP.
6. Load GTA:LCS and enter the ELoader exactly as in step 2.
7. Select "2.6 EBoot Update" from the list. Let the update run,
this will upgrade your firmware to 2.6.
8. When it's complete, reset your PSP and check your firmware
has upgraded by using the PSP system menus.
Part 3 - Begin The Downgrade
YOU PERFORM THIS DOWNGRADE AT YOUR OWN RISK - YOU UNDERSTAND
THAT IT MIGHT BREAK ("brick") YOUR PSP.
9. Copy the "DOWNDATER EBOOT" folder to the memory stick in
the PSP/GAME folder. Eg: if your PSP has been assigned G:
by Windows, copy "DOWNDATER EBOOT" to
"G:\PSP\GAME\DOWNDATER EBOOT".
10.Copy the "DOWNDATER" folder to the root of the memory
stick. Eg: if your PSP has been assigned G: by Windows,
copy "DOWNDATER" to "G:\DOWNDATER"
*****MAKE SURE YOUR PSP IS CONNECTED TO THE MAINS******
*****LOSS OF POWER NOW WILL BREAK YOUR PSP!!!!!!!******
11.Load GTA:LCS and enter the ELoader exactly as in step 2.
12.Choose the Downdater eboot in the ELoader. When you select it
the update will begin IMMEDIATELY. NOTHING will be shown on
the screen. The memorystick light will flash for a bit.
Expect to wait up to 5 minutes for this to complete!
DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PSP DURING THIS TIME! THE SCREEN WILL BE
BLACK - THIS IS NORMAL.
13.Wait until the memorystick light stops flashing, then wait
a few more minutes.
DO NOT TURN YOUR PSP OFF MANUALLY WHILE THE UPDATE IS IN
PROGRESS. WAIT A MINIMUM OF 10 (TEN) MINUTES BEFORE MANUALLY
TURNING IT OFF. Turning it off in the middle of the ROM update
will corrupt your PSP's firmware and break it. Turning it off
is a LAST RESORT in case the downgrade doesn't auto-reboot your
PSP.
14.If your PSP does not automatically reboot itself, turn it off
completely, remove the GTA:LCS UMD then turn it back on again.
-OR-
14.If your PSP does reboot itself, expect to see a message that says
the UMD cannot be read. Turn the PSP off completely, remove the
UMD, turn the PSP back on (the UMD is fine, the PSP just gets
confused).
15.The process is complete! If everything worked correctly you will
now have a PSP with 1.5 firmware!
Update:
You can avoid all this work by downloading this:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/download.php?id=605
Its a program called "Auto Downgrader.exe"
It will apply all of the Downgrade files (including GTA Loader) in the right place on your PSP. I myself would rather place the files in the places on the PSP myself to secure that it wont go wrong.
Note: Thanks for reading, And best of luck downgrading your PSP to play all you old retro games
---------------------------------------------------~END~-----------------------------------------------------
2.71 to 1.50 (No GTA) :
Similar to the above downgrade but doesn't require you to use GTA.
Preparing your PSP:
First you should copy everything from your memory stick duo including game saves, music, movies, or any other files you want and back them up on your computer. Once completed, on your PSP go to ‘System Settings’ and format your memory stick. Then check to make sure that you have full battery power if possible and now you’re ready to begin the process of downgrading your 2.71 PSP to firmware 1.5.
Programs/Files you will need:
(i) Firmware 2.71 available from here: http://mypsportal.com/Firmware2.71.rar
(ii) Downgrader available from here: http://mypsportal.com/downdater271(2).rar
(iii) Downdater folder from a 1.5 user available here: http://mypsportal.com/DOWNDATER.rar
Downgrading to firmware 1.5
1.
Make sure that you have firmware 2.71 or else this downgrade won’t work. If you currently have 2.7 and below just update to 2.71 by downloading the update file in file (i) and then on your PSP create a folder called UPDATE which should be put in the PSP > GAME > UPDATE. Then inside the UPDATE folder put the EBOOT.PBP file from the (i) download. Start up your PSP and then go to the game menu and launch the update from there. Once you have updated to 2.71 delete the data after you’ve updated and proceed to step two.
2.
Open up the zipped Downgrader file which is (ii). Then click on the MS_ROOT folder an you’ll come in contact with the following files.
PSP
d.bin
LEEME.TXT
README.TXT
Now copy these files to the root of your PSP, the area that is the first screen which comes up when you connect your PSP to your computer via USB mode. If it says that the folder PSP already exists, just hit ok.
3.
Now take the DOWNDATER folder, which should be unzipped by now (iii) and put it in the same place as the root of your PSP.
You should now have the following folders on the root of your PSP.
‘PSP’
‘Downdater’
MP_ROOT – (Not important, but already there most likely)
d.bin (file)
LEEME.TXT (Not important)
README.TXT (Not important)
4.
Now exit out of USB mode and go to the PHOTOS menu on your PSP, it may freeze the first few times and if it does don’t get frazzled, just hold the power button until your PSP fully turns off, then turn it back on and go to PHOTOS again until you see a full bright red screen. Leave the PSP alone and let it do its thing. When it’s done fully downgrading it will automatically shut down, once you start your PSP up you will be on a successfully downgraded 1.5 PSP. Just configure the settings as if you had a new PSP and then reformat your memory stick again via the System Settings menu. After you have done that, simply put your SAVEDATA along with any other files that you copied to your computer back onto your PSP and you’re done!
You can always upgrade to the latest availble downgradable firmware and then downgrade.
Currently you cannot downgrade any firmwares after 2.71...

IF YOU FIND THE DREADED TA-082 MOBO ON YOUR PSP:
http://img331.imageshack.us/img331/2971/pspidentify4kkcp9.jpg
You cannot use the downgraders I mentioned above as it will brick (make it unusable) PSP, but you can use this HENC to emulate 1.50 firmware and then boot backup games from memory stick.

the "Load Game" option.
