Is there any difference in the quality of a burned Mini-DVDR compared to a Full Size DVDR? Do Full Size DVDs work better then Mini's??? Would i get less DREs with Full size DVD-R's.?

Yes. I get much less errors when I use full size DVDs. I use Verbatim x8 full size DVDs on MCC dye and Verbatim mini DVD-Rs x4 on the same dye and I get more errors. I just don't get it ;\.

minis seem more aragent to work than full sized discs, but users are getting strange things from different 8cm dvdr.
for instance I have memorex mini's that don't work at all in my GC, someone I know has 10 or more games on these discs and they all play fine. It's just about testing all the media you can get your hands on unitl you find the right one.
www.blankdiscshop.co.uk do a selection of mini dvd-r now, 4 or 5 different ones for about £6 with that you can burn the same iso to each disc and try them all for a good session...then go from there.
I've been striving to get mini dvd-r becuase I want my GC undremeled and with it's lid back on (constant splliagaes etc in my house) this is why i've been hunting mini dvd-r :)
of course when i finish my hunt i'll post my findings properly :)

I also ordered 25 mini jewel cases for $5.50. Everything should be here Tomorrow. :D
You guys might wanna give these a shot. Or maybe even those Hyundai disks...People have reported good feedback on those as well. ~wun~

im using full size dvdrs to test with a GO4 dye and if the game is playing ok with no disc errors then im burning them to datawrite mini reds, i`m not having any problems with dre or anything, but i must just be luck lol:p

I have all my stuff on Ritek G04 Mini's and they work great. Oddly the only time I get DRE error are when I'm exiting out of a game (which really doesn't matter anyways). Honestly you need to ask yoursel if it's worth it to tear apeart your GC or play with the lid off. Mini can be fairly cheep if you shop around (about $1 a blank).

yeah but only in amercia.
UK retails are the thickest load of mongs ever....I was even going to start a blank media business becuase we STILL can't get any real source of ritek mini dv-r over here.
I'm now using a brand called 'Budget' mini dvd-r and although a few don't work they do a bit and they crash on what seems to be BiOS issues not disc. I even got mario power tennis working on them :D
Although sadly gaems that did work on full size now don't on mini's I am happy to wiat till next week for cobra v.5 :)

I use full size with the lid off. Gamecube is out of the way so won't get damaged.
Want to start using mini's but can't get any decent one's in the UK.

mmm ploppy plop is thinking.......
RED datawrite minis work with no problems on my GC, im getting ISO images each day, i want cheaper media than the red data writes cos im a cheap skate, people seem to think the .5 bios is going to fix things for people,
i know ploppy plop is going to do the following
i'll wait until the .5 bios is out to see if theres anything in there to help with the DRE issue, if so then get a mini dvd-r multi media pack to see if cheaper disks work on my GC.
in the mean time ive 10 data write RED disks full of games that ive got to play, wheres the rush with having to burn them to mini DVD-R?
if theres something i simply cannot wait to play i'll spend £1.10 on a disk that works for it.
you never know a plastic lid that allows you to use full size disks may come out.
cheers!

8.50 with first class delivery, i have been paying 10 quid exactly for 10 datsafe mini's.
Have ordered the 25, will give them a go see how i get on with them, i am also a cheap skate :D
Well not really, it just pi**es me off that mini dvd-r, although half the size are 4x the price.
I have heard you get a good few coasters with these Budget disks though, 1 guy i know had 31 coasters out of 100 discs, thats a lot if you ask me.
How have they been treating you?

lol well he's obviously got a bad batch or something.
I am getting odd results with my budget discs, i'd like to hear how you get on with them. On ps2ownz the dye on two other mini dvd-r worked perfectly apparently. I have played on mine for quite a lot and some games will load perfeclty and others will only load up to the point where it starts to heavily read from the enge of the disc.
I am trying to find out how to pad the 1.35GB files out to 1.45 or so but am having no luck...I was hoping if I can do this then I can confirm that these discs are wicked. However i'm also waiitng on .5 becuase I really hope the DRE errors they'll fix are:
hanging on menu's and on screen text (damn you zelda ;))
Hanging when reaching the edge of the disc
If these errors alll go away i'd be a very happy chappy indeed.
From cheapprices4u.co.uk I ordered a mix of blue and clear cases and 50 mini dvd-r and it all came to £31 inc. £9 courier next day delivery...Although I hate paying that much for delivery it was a fookin bargain and a half :)
(plus i've been printing dvd cases from a template I made and they look wicked all stacked up next to my DVDs :D
edit: to answer ya jimbo, I've had 2 coasters out of about 16 burns and both coasters were becuase I was burning off a network and my housemate decided to reboot hsi pc while I was burning off, the second time the network just got down. Since then I copied them to my PC and burnt them all flawlessly. I've also not had one disc that has totally refused to boot, they've all had a good go and nearly all stopped in the same place - just as the intro's load

Cheers for the reply bud, sounding like it was a good idea to order them after all :D
I have burned off 20 games so far and all 20 play perfectly on the datasafe. Well I say perfectly, mario tennis, golf e.t.c still crashes when the laser goes idle, as does res 4, all 3 games are in totally random places but all are when there is no laser activity for a few minutes (mario tennis being by far the worst).
I have been carefull with what I burn though seeing as these disc cost me a quid each :( couldnt afford to waste any. Every image i burned had been confirmed working with the Viper either in the .NFO or from someone who had burned and played it.
Am also getting a few strange problems myself, mario party 6 for example has been working fine for the last 3 weeks, went to boot it today and it wouldnt boot, after about the 8th try it loaded up, played it for 4 hours and not a single problem, am now wondering if these disc are starting to go dodgy already  although it is the only game that is doing it.
Res 4 crashed 6 times in a row at the same place, just by chance I tried it 1 last time and it went past the same bit without any problems, played it for 2 hours straight and it was fine
The idle issues are deffo a bug that am pretty sure will be fixed in this new BIOS (lets face it, it has taken around a month) and am looking forward to doing more testing with the games that are crashing, especially mario tennis and res 4, also want to see if mario party still acts like a ***** when trying to boot it with the new BIOS.
I am pretty confident my laser is good enough untweaked, can play mario kart all I want and their is never a problem (has been on for over 9 hours 1 day), also the same with the majority of the games I have burned.
Should imagine discs will be here in a day or 2, probably battered to bits knowing royal mail (my own fault for selecting quid delivery haha)
Will let you know how I get on as I still have well over 30 ISO's to burn :D
Cheers mate
EDIT: I check all my burned discs against the .ISO using dvdinfopro, all the games I have burned have came out 100% identical. This is using NERO, all other software I tried got to 99% then had 100's of differences, probably nothing to worry about as it was probably something to do with the lead out, but still, makes you think.
Do I win for longest post ever? ;)

I havn't played long enough to say games play 100% pefectly. Each time I boot the budget dvdr's I get mixed results. For example super smash bros, product no. 03 and mario tennis all booted first time and perfectly witht eh budgets, I could play all three for about 10 or 20 mins without any hassels or DRE. Then when I was testing some more games I had burnt nearly all hung as the game went from publisher info to game intro. I then treid to play mario tennis and it did the same as the other games. With that I got annoyed and stopped testing and went off to do something else. (I live in a shared house so TV use is sometimes limited in the living room (and i'm too lazy to move stuff constantly))
i'm now burning some game sI got overnight, mario party 6, res evil 4, kirby air ride, 1080 and Starfox. I will burn them off and report back :D
I'm burning on a LG GSA-4040B - possibly one of the worst rated dvd writers in the world but I think it's wicked you just gotta keep it sweet ;) (that means nothing, just put A304 firmware on and cross ya fings)
I burn at 2.4x as nero gives me no choice - which makes it easier. I don't like reading about how 4x can actually make a disc image more readable - I find that really wierd...but maybe their burners are even worse than mine...?

MP6 just gets to the games intro and then DRE...booo! :O
It's the same damn place on my games every time,,,it makes me think that if I had to pad all my images out by 100MB or so then i'l have to reburn 20 or so discs now...something i didn't really want to do. Ok these discs are £8.50 for 25 and it is worth experimenting but i'm getting the same results each and every time, I'm not really gaining anything from burning themn anymore.
I might have to get my head down and do some work in preperation for .5 release which will hopefully be with us in 4 -6 days . Then i'll get ready to cry when it's worse than .4 lol

Am burning on a Pioneer 107 and all my games come out perfect when i run checks on them. MP6, starfox e.t.c play perfectly for me, starfox has never failed to load and has never crashed.
I burn at 4x which is the max for the disc i use, the reason they work better at 4x is because that is what they are designed for, the dye is formulated to be burned at higher speeds which is why it gives better results, same as burning 8x disks at 8x in an 8x burner should give the best results for that disc as both the writer and disc are designed for that speed.
Gone are the days of 1x being the most reliable burn

oh well, call me old fashioned but i'm happy to wait 10 mins to burn at 2.4x so i'll just carry on. Good things come to those who wai tI guess
I also have no choice so i'll just do what nero tells me and be happy :) The budget discs are 1-4x but I'm only presented with 2.4 so I guess i'm happy with that

I also tested the speed theory on Mario Tennis & Golf. I first burned them @4x on Ritek 4x mini's. Both games played pretty well except for that 'idle bug'. Then i burned @2x and the dre's were less of an annoyance & got to play more of the games. Every other game i have, is burned @4x and i can play for hours on end w/out any hitches. So im just lead to believe its Mario's fault!! lol j/k :p
I even reburned Mario Party 6 @2x last night which would pull a dre out its a$$ once in a blue and played for 4hrs..No problem.
Im gonna start tryin different boot disks...I've been using RE0,Windwaker & Mario Sunshine b/c i believe them to be games with the largest TOC size. <<dunno if i should believe this theory either? lol

Yeah, I just don't wanna waste $25 if they're not. I just emailed them so hopefully they'll know if they are.
so what are your guys opinions? Should i be using mini-dvdr or buying the FULL SIZE DVD Case mod and use full size DVD-r ?
In the long run which would be better?

Totally down to you. As long as you can get good quality mini's (ritek go4 seem to be best with minis) , then they should work just aswell as the full size , but there more expensive.
So it's really down to you , do you want to:
Pay one off fee for replacment case and use cheaper full size discs.
Keep original case and use slightly more expensive mini's.
Personally I use mini's , for a couple of reasons.
1: I think the replacement case's look horrible , and am happy to pay slighty more for go4 mini's in jewel case's (£2.90 for 3 or something like that) to keep my original , nice looking case.
2: Replacments case's are to expensive here (UK) , most places I seen with them or getting them are £20 ish , to much for half a case. Can get a used cube fo £40 , new for £50 if you shop around or get it in special deal.
So £20 for just a top of a case is to much , I know there limited runs so the price will be more , but still , half a case for £20 , whole cube for £40 .
3: Cube was not designed for full size discs ,I would like to see if full size discs for extended periods of time (year or so) , cause any negative effects.
*Let the bitching commence , I know it will*
so very true. I think i will stick to mini-dvdr. I mean im not going to be 'backing up' every single game. Only good games. Not really worth it for aswell, as i live in Australia, and it will cost $80 AU for just the case, where the GC are $99 AU brand new.
I will get the viper and stick to mini-dvdr!
Thanks again for your response!;)
