View Full Version : Wii is a 48 Hour Winner
The Washington times relay belief that the Nintendo Wii has definitely been a success, 48 hours into its launch, thanks largely due to the fact that there was more units available.
American Technology Research analyst P.J. McNealy told USA Today there is a good reason why Nintendo is selling more Wii's than Sony is selling PS3's. Sony had hoped to deliver about 400,000 PS3s to the United States, while Nintendo planned on deliver 1 million Wiis.
"It's only the first 48 hours of a five-year battle, but the first 48 hours was clearly a victory for Nintendo," said McNealy. "They had more boxes."

I'm a nintendo fan but this is like winning a contest by default. Just because the other guys don't have enough consoles, not right to say they beat them... you have to compare on even grounds, and once PS3 starts pumping out more units, then hopefully Nintendo will be able to keep up :)

Again... the Nintendo fanboys will get their Wii's and then it will be done, no more Wii sales. PS3 should easily out sell the PS2 with the world population increasing, gamers increasing and the included BR drive at such a reasonable price. All you get with a Wii is an ancient gamecube and a remote control and for $250 what a joke.

this old pesty argument again ok ill play my part $800 is a lot of money to spend on a toy although I would kind of like a ps3 I am unwilling to pay that much and so are many people
also there tactic of sending out so few to create forced scarcity is immoral and got a handful of innocent people killed along with others badly injured witch they should be held accountable for common sense would tell you there was a good chance of that happening but sony did not care

Five years ago on 11/18/2001, the GameCube launched. In its launch week 700k consoles were sold. News outlets predicted a rosy future (http://news.com.com/Nintendo+reports+record+GameCube+launch/2100-1040_3-276374.html) for the Gamecube.
Now a half decade later on 11/19/2006, a console which is internally just an upclocked GC (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061031-8112.html) is launched. In its launch weekend, it sells 1mil consoles. And a news outlet just predicted a rosy future.
As for the future of the Wii, i'm not a betting man, but you know what they say; the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Yep, how can I pass up the deal of owning a movie player that nobody wants and may not even be around in a couple years time. I definatly would rather have that then great games like Zelda.

It's really starting to stink in here... stop talking out of your ass.
PS3 lost the battle, this is a fact. No one knows if Wii will remain on top in the long run, but the fact is that PS3 lost the launch.

It always does after the isht hits the fan.

That depends on what your definition of "lost" is. If you meant whoever sold the most consoles on launch day "won", then sure, the Wii won the battle. However as I illustrated above, launch stock quantities are mostly a thing for fanboys to banter about, not any real indicator of whether or not a console will fly or flop.

It really isn't possible to determine which console "won" the launch weekend. Both the PS3 and the Wii sold out in approximately 24-48 hours after they were released. The Wii had more units and therefore has more total sales for the launch weekend. Therefore the actual popularity and future sales of the consoles cannot even begin to be judged.
I personally own a Nintendo Wii and I must say that I am very pleased with it. However, as much as I would like to say that the Wii is the outright winner it wouldn't be true.
As far as actual profits it is safe to assume that the Wii made more money than the PS3, but this is mainly due to the Wii's lower price and greater volume. We just have to give it some time to find out the truth.

Exactly, dunno how most of the people or so damn stupid and childish but maybe they should be just happy. There is more competition -> there will be better games and cheaper consoles. The console winning this "competition" is the one with the best games. Whether it costs 250$, 399$ or 599$ it is the games the decide. Too bad if your console lost, shait happens. Get over it but acting like a tard on these forums is one thing people should really get rid of. Now I know how much stupid people there really are.

well for one the numbers someone above posted was the GC sold 700,000 in its first week, well the Wii sold 1 million+ in 2 days, so thats impressive. also the Wii has gotten alot of people excited, i don't know if i have ever seen people this excited over a nintendo console, and the ds has changed people's perceptions and will help the Wii in sales.
also lets say that sony did indeed hit there 400,000 number of units and sold out, sony is supposedly losing $240 on the $600 version and $307 on the $500 version. but for this little experiment lets just go with the $240 to give sony a break. ok, the Wii is estimated to be making nintendo $50 everytime they sell a Wii at the least possibly even more. so lets do the math:
so sony lost $96,000,000 if they sold 400,000 units.
nintendo made $50,000,000 if they sold 1 million units.
so sony lost almost twice as much as nintendo made, I would say that nintendo won the launch.
and if you are going to say the PS3 will make up all its money with game sales, well that hasn't been the case so far. on average there has been barely 1 game sale per PS3 sale. so maybe people have spent so much on the console that they can't afford more than one game. in fact in japan this last week, PS3 was released there last week, the ds games out sold the PS3 games 4 to 1. so yeah i'm pretty sure nintendo won out of the two consoles for the release.

You know, BuffaloBill, there's a filter on the front page of MaxConsole. Maybe instead of making your way into every single Wii newspost to **** all over it, you could just not read them? Seems like everybody'd be happier that way.
Seriously, I don't get it. Good games are good games. Will the Wii have good games? Yes. It already does, according to the vast majority of reviews. Does the XBox 360 have good games? Yep. Will the PS3 have good games? Yes, it will. Resistance is getting very nice reviews, though it isn't my type of game.
Some people are willing to pay $600 for their gaming consoles, and some people aren't. Some people are hardcore RPG or FPS players, and they'll gravitate to the consoles that have those. Me, I want something I can play casually (except when I'm playing Zelda obsessively, that is), and that my wife will occasionally pick up and play with me. So I've got a DS (and love it) and I'll be getting a Wii.
So why exactly does a person's choice of console make them an idiot, whether they're spending $250 or $600 or what types of games they like to play? Please, explain that to me. Go ahead and criticize Sony's arrogant PR department, go ahead and criticize Nintendo for being uncompetitive in the graphics department. But leave your fellow gamers alone. Honestly, it's no wonder the public image of gamers is that of immature, violent adolescents who don't mix well with the rest of society.

You might want to actually try reading the material that you quote. I explicitly say that in the long run, it's impossible to tell where the consoles will stand. However, this thread is about what happened in the last 48 hours. If you are here to argue that Sony is in a much better position because they sold less units in 48 hours then who is the fanboy?
The reason that the number of console sales is a good way to see how the launch went is because people generally defend the purhcases they make. Today I heard several people talking about how much fun the Wii is to play. Any discussion about the PS3? Nope. No one owns one so how could they talk about it?
