With the MAX dock just double tap on the .nds homebrew file in the directory.

do most homebrew games work on it?
I might have miss read the subject but under this Datel thread I assume you have something like the Datel device Max Media Dock.
So just add a compact flash to it or the HDD that comes with it and you are ready to use homebrews. I have the NDS-lite and have had no trouble yet running homebrews.

I've run into quite a few programs where I've had problems.
I'd like to, but haven't been able to run:
DSOrganize
DSLinux
Win2DS
DeSmuME (only because it doesn't have a .nds version)
and others
Any help would be apreciated

Yeah I did. It gave me a "no compression found" message or something along the lines.
