Are you a Nintendo fanboy? Have you been around since the dawn of the Nintendo Handheld era? Own a DS Lite? If you answered yes to all the above, then you may like this creation... (continued)

Resident review Goddess Chrissy decided to show her love when creating a skin for the new Nintendo DS Lite. When trying to decide on what to create to put on her DS Lite, she had a bit of 'Writer's Block' trying to decide what to design. Having owned every iteration of Nintendo's handheld systems, it occured to her that the DS was approximately the same size as an original Gameboy...

At that point, the gerbil wheels started spinning and she came up with the 'Old School' DS Lite design.

To her, it represents a 'return to the roots of portable gaming' while still reaping the benefits of the latest technology.

Whoohoo! That's my baby!

It actually looks alot better in person, just couldn't get a good pic without a glare.

Since Zeus' photoshop skills are weak sauce, here are some more pics of it :p

I flipped the top skin so that the 'power' button matched up with the real one. I like it this way better I think.

Here is a pic of the actual template I created if you want to see it in better detail:

Whole thing was created from scratch in Photoshop, hope you all like it!

That is awesome. I love it.

Would it be possible to actually post somewhere the actual template used so everyone can make their own if they want.

Also what do you print it on so it can be removed from the DSLite without leaving anything behind when eventually removed.

I have only one suggestion and that is on the top piece. You should square off the rounded corner. I know this takes away from the original look of the Gameboy but visually I think it would look better. Just a suggestion.

Thanks

This is cool, I am currently working on a "Classic" version of the DS Lite like the one they did for the GBA SP. I hope to have it finished in a couple of days and I can post some pics.

very nice. Love the outside skin, it looks fantastic and adds personalisation and a layer of protection. But I am not keen on skinning the inside bits though.

Thanks for the comments guys!

I had it professionally printed on a vinal like material. It comes on and off easily without leaving residue and is laminated so the colors don't smear. Stickers tend to leave junk on the system and the colors smear easily without a cover.

My initial design was a carbon copy of a real Original Gameboy, but for legal reasons they couldn't print that, so I had to change it up a little to get it printed. I may go back and do a v2.0 and make a few tweaks here and there.

I was trying to decide what to do with the inside of the unit. I initially went with more colors and fancy designs, but then when I thought about it, I felt the minimalist approach worked best since I was going for a 'retro' feel. My only dissapointment is that I would LOVE to find a place who could actually color the buttons and the joystick to match the colors on the outside. If it looked more like it does in the template then I think it would take it up a notch, but overall I'm very happy with it. I've already fooled several people on initial look, which was the original intention of the design. Hell, even Zeus was confused when I sent him the first pic :p

Yeah .. I would really like the PSD file as well.

I found this here in the US that might work for home printing. (I'm sure its available in other parts of the world as well.)
