PRESS RELEASE: Nintendo Announces Wii Information, Worldwide Shipments

Following its overwhelming debut at E3 2006, Nintendo today announced the current fiscal year unit shipment forecast for its new home game system, Wii™. Nintendo also confirmed that the price of the Wii system, which incorporates unique freehand control, will not exceed $250 in America, or ¥25,000 in Japan. The company plans to ship 6 million systems to retailers around the world between its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007.

The projections are part of a full-year financial forecast that sees growth of 18 percent in sales globally, based on anticipated continuing strong demand for the Nintendo DS™ portable game system, as well as a successful launch for Wii.

The company also said it expects to sell 17 million Wii games in the period. Exact launch dates, identification of the launch library of titles and details on the unique Virtual Console aspect of Wii will be announced soon.

These numbers seem very possible to me. I have way more friends getting Wii's than I have friends who have a 360.

the Wii will have more units at hand for retail than ps3 or 360 because its cheaper to mass produce, and wont matter to nintendo as its costs them next to nothing to make the console.

unlike 360 (and i assume ps3 too) they couldnt go blowing billions of console worldwide and hope they all sold, theyres a chance that they might not, this is called "supply and demand" you make retailers deliberately sell out so they begin pre-orders and then you know how many you need to make.

never count your chickens untill your eggs hatch.

Even though the exchange rate at this time estimates the Wii at around £117, I reckon the Wii will be released in the UK for £199 or under. Not too shabby.

I won't have a chance to pick up on the release day from here ( Istanbul ), but I will wait for a good bundle package , I guess here thigns will come a little "salty" at the beggining , but with the last Nintendo admin moves thigns have becoming more near to the price on Europe and USA, sure there is a % over as always.

Microsoft plans on having 5.5 million consoles in the hands of gamers by the end of June. Nintendo will actually have a massive chance of catching up and surpasing Microsoft this time next year. Not only that, they will also make money in the process. Microsoft bought their victory over Nintendo last round, but I have a feeling that instead of battling for 2nd place, they will be going for 1st. (boo PS3 suxors and whatnot).

I need to pre-order, I want this console on launch. My only wish was that SSBB came out on the same day, but I can live with Metroid and Red Steel.
