View Full Version : Naughty Dog: Uncharted 2 is using nearly PS3's full power

Naughty Dog has commmented that where as Uncharted probably used 30 percent of the PS3's power, Uncharted 2 is nearly using 100 percent of its power!

<blockquote>"On PlayStation 3 for our first game, we were using probably only 30 percent of the power of the Cell, and this time we're getting close to 100 percent of using the power of the PS3," Balestra tells two making of movies.

The movies in question are available online, and we'll continue to bring you more news on Uncharted 2 and Naughy Dog as we get it.

Indeed, the actor playing Nathan Drake has already urged the developer and Sony to make a third game - something which is beginning to look inevitable.</blockquote>

eh we've heard this before from all devs. it's too early in the console(s) life to be maxed out. maybe another year and a half or two years at most, we will see the limits of the current gen consoles.

and i'm all for a third uncharted, 1 was good, 2 is great, almost awesome, so 3 should be awesome.

All Dev hype making themselves look good by maxing the beast out so early..I think no whilst graphically stunning I personally think there is still alot more they can tap from those cores done correctly...

maybe he's right. Maybe they have "used" 100% of the power of the cell. Next they have to learn to use 100% of the power of the cell efficiently.

Use of the hardware and optimized use of the hardware are different things

deja vu, we had this exact news almost a year ago (10 months ago).

http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=134882

discussed in depth back then but I'll copy past something I said in a previous thread. I think ND need to be a little less vague in their statements but most people don't want to hear technical jargon either.

"30% is SPE utilization at any one time it's telling people that their code handed off tasks to 30% of the SPUs at any one time. So some SPUs were idling (ie not 100 hardware utilization). Naughty dog and some other devs spent a great deal of time developing the low-level tool Edge so that the they can farm out jobs to the SPUs more efficiently this doesn't mean the time it takes for an operation that they did farm out can't be reduced so they don't say uncharted 2 is as good as it gets but they did say that the SPUs are now doing something pretty much all of the time."

the analogy is your workforce taking holidays/breaks. Then you get rid of their holidays (you evil b*stard). This still doesn't mean much in terms of productivity. your workforce can be doing something all the time but it doesn't mean they are doing it in the most productive way possible that is where the programming tricks come in.

I'm sure they will find some more (hidden) power for uncharted 3 ;)

not using a multicore and assembly you cant, but I do get your point.

Full power, don't mean perfect games. If you made a game of sh*t, also full power game rest a sh*t.

Next two years developers will be pushing the PS3 to "120% or more of its potential."

Oh how I hate these type of statements. What the hell is it with ND these days? it seems that they have a mic in their face 24/7. That's it I'm tired of reading about them already.

The release of Uncharted 2 kinda has something to do with that. ;)
I'm sick too this is really old news don't know why it was posted again.
Don't see why you should hate the statement though other than its age.

Infinity ward should really read this thread...its a good example of why developers should absolutely not be the PR for their games.
