View Full Version : Massive Chunk of PS3 owners don't care for Blu-ray movies
New research indicates a large section of the PS3 owning population are not interested in using the device as a Blu-ray player and many have not even attempted to watch a single movie.

A large bulk of people who buy a Sony PS3 are not interested in using the Blu ray player and have never tried to watch a Blu ray movie, claims a new research study. This is despite Sony Computer Entertainment bragging about the benefits of their player inside the PS3 console.

I watch Blueray movies on my PS3 but its about 1% of the usage of the unit.
If it didnt have blueray I still would've got it.
It's like a feature thats there and its good but it kinda never gets used.

The only blu-ray I watched was Talladega Nights, and that is only because it came free with the console. I have never even watched a dvd with it, there are much better units that don't require a proprietary remote.

Add me to the list.
I've got 3 BD movies from amazon when they gave me $50 credit and they were having a buy 2 get one free special. And of those three I've only watched one of them, that's in 18 months of having a BD player (the PS3) and being a big movie buff.

The other side of the story...
I dont play PS3 games, maybe a couple of hours every month, but i do see lots and lots of movies in it, not Bluray neccesarily...
You all people saying that doesnt use the Bluray....i got a question, do you have HD trasmissions on the tv?
yeah?, well i dont, doesnt exists in the third world, so if you have a 50" fullhd and a family, believe me you wont play PS3 as much as you think.
You can have thousands in cutting edge gadgets, but no HD tv.....so a Bluray collection is kinda mandatory if you like 1080p kinda of life.
i know...is sad.

It doesn't require a proprietary remote it just needs a bluetooth remote any BT remote will work.

yeah bluray remotes are a dime a dozen who doesnt have one. i think just about every store has one too.
lol
whats funny is how when ps3 came out everyone always said BUT YEAH IT PLAYS BLURAYS.. and just about every person out tehre who got suckered into buying a ps3 at $700 always says how much its worth it cuz it can play blurays... meanwhile, no one fuckign uses the thing for blurays (no smart person does anyways seeing that sony cant make a laser that lasts if the company depended on it)

So you guys own a ps3 but down a hdtv? Or you just use dvd's instead? I'm not getting this. It has a blu-ray player and blu-ray movies are 1080 and like an extra 5 bucks.
Really confuses me this one.

not Bluray remote Bluetooth remote. bluetooth isn't proprietary to Sony it's like saying wireless N is proprietary to DLink just because there are not that many N routers out there and DLink happen to make one.
Have problems with your GPU? maybe you ought to stop playing games on your 360. you want to be smart right?

I was an early adopter so for that first year watching blu-ray movies was almost the only thing to do on it. I have a large collection of movies now.

The Dark Knight on BluRay.
On a 1080p TV or projector must be seen.
Anybody with a 360 or PS3 with a SD tv should be ashamed, a 1080p 32' is less than 500euro now!

I never bought the PS3 for blu-ray movies anyway, in fact i had 2 Modded Nintendo Wii's that i fixed up after buying them cheap as they were mod screw ups, and i traded 1 of them for a PS3 and never looked back.

I think someone in my family might have watched a few BDs.... personally I never have, or DVDs for that matter; however, if I buy a movie I would get a BD at this point. BD isn't as expensive as it once was, blank media aside, so getting a good player and a few movies doesn't mean your family will have to do without food for a week anymore.
I've always been more interested in the PS3 as a games machine, likewise the PS2, and the PS1 (I never listened to an audio cd on it). If it's a gaming console that's what I'll be using it for.

I own 3 bluray disks now..paid for one (it was Disney's Earth and came with both Bluray and DVD, watched the DVD version in the living room), Talledega Nights that came with the system (still unopened) and Watchmen Directors Edition that was thrown in with 4 games I bought off of craigslist. I've been thinking about watching Watchmen to see whats different about the directors cut but havent made the effort yet.

I think onr problem is that bds still cost quite a bit more than their dvd counterparts.
As soon as you can start picking them up for £4-10 adoption will pribably increase.

I am not on that list as have watched more than 100 blu-rays on mine since I have had it. If it didn't have blu-ray I probably would only be now buying a player now you can get them sub £100. But I do watch alot of films.

Out of all the people I know that have a ps3 (which s a lot) I know of only 2 that don't use it for watching blu-rays. One has a dedicated blu ray player and the other only has an sd tv. I have about 20 games and about 80 blu-rays.

in the 3 years i've owned it, i have watched exactly zero bluray movies on my PS3, and yes, it's hooked up @ 1080p and 5.1 surround. i mostly play battlefield: bad company, that game sounds fantastic in 5.1 DTS. i play a lots of other retail games on it too, and i have quite a few PSN games.

dual layer avchd all the way baby,30 cernts for a double layer dvd,29 censt for a case and descent printpaper et voila...
...and buy some blu-rays now and then promotions mostly as they are still way to expensive at the moment...
movies-->main reason for me...
One on my friend bought it only for bluray and his hidef memory stick camcorder . He doesn't play game at all.
I have 20+ bluray movies and just bought the Transformer 2 Bluray last night.
I was watching Matrix reload (Matrix collection with 5 disc for $39.99 bought in costco)

I dont buy them because its just economically impractical at the moment. I have 2 hd tv's in the house..one in the den and one in the living room, the PS3 is in the den and the living room has an upscaling dvd player. All the bedrooms have standard defintion tv's with regular dvd players...why in the world would I buy a movie I can only play in one room of the house? For what its worth I did buy one so far, but it came bundled with a dvd copy...if companies besides disney decide to do that I might just buy more, but until then the other studios get dvd purchases.

I'm so confused here it's not even funny. Do you not watch movies? Do you prefer dvd for some assbackwards reason? Is the Ps3 a shitty blu-ray player?
Seriously all you guys saying add me to the list is making my head hurt. Maybe it's because you don't own a Ps3 and want to jump on the shitwagon, or you own a sd tv so there's no point.
This guy really confuses me though. They are an extra 5 bucks compared to a dvd and the only alternative to the physical purchasing method out there. So you buy dvds? You download rips that are in 1080 and encoded in h.264 and stream them?

See, now that makes sense!
But don't most blu-ray releases come with a standard dvd disc included?
That's what they should do!

So far only Disney does it consistantly (kind of ironic that the studio that is usually the most greedy and pirate paranoid is the most friendly now), Fox and Lionsgate have done it sporatically but I really wish it would take hold as a standard option, I dont mind spending 3-4 bucks more to get both formats, but no way will I buy two copies at regular prices...thats why blu-ray normally looses out.

i usually watch movies once in a movie theater, then never watch that movie again. on the rare occasion that i actually want to watch a movie that i didn't see in a theater, i'll watch the xvid dvdrip. if it was something i didn't even bother to watch in a theater, then the picture quality doesn't really matter to me....

i don't even own a blu ray movie, then again i don't buy anything these days except some dl dvds for my 360 games (also some dvdr's for some movies or whatever else), an the occasional ps3 exclusive.
never was a big movie tech guy, i barely bought dvd's, let alone blu rays which cost upwards of $30.

upwards of $30? are you sure about that? The most expensive one I've seen is $27.99. If you were so inclined, you could go to amazon and get then as cheap as $9.99. Not that I've bought any myself, but price is not the reason.

HMV have new releases from 15-18 quid, 30-50 is for seasons.
lost season 5 is 45, true blood is 37 and clone wars 35.
older movies start at 6.99
why do people still say dvd is so much cheaper? i still see dvds for 25+
I understand now, your all pirates so anything would be expensive

DON'T add me to the list lol.....
Honestly, Bluray is the way to go. Not on old movies u agree, but with all the special effects etc nowadays, blu rays are a must. (If you have HDTV):D
I got my first one free with the console, (Casino Royale) and started to collect from there, i've got 64 Blu rays now, that's counting one for each boxset, but i have about 15 boxsets, so i imagine i get near the 100 mark for individual films.
You can pick up Blurays on ebay really cheap now, and watching something like transformers in HD with 7.1 surround sound is a must. The film ain't great, but the effects are! Watchign Swordfish with the first explosion, (near) full volume, wow, i bet my neighbours love me!!!
If you can afford it, even just rent one from Blockbusters, make sure its a film with special effects though, as its not work it for films what are jsut storyline....
