Right now my console is not updated to that summer update released yesterday. But if my xbox breaks for the 6th time on or after this October I will open it up and mod it to play backups, but for now I'm keeping it hack-free. If I update to this new firmware would I still be able to mod it and play back-ups in the future if I chose so? I heard a report on not to update but I think it was just for homebrew not for back-ups.

You are correct, the Summer update only effects the ability to run the soon to be released free60 hack for homebrew. You will still be able to mod/flash the drive with the Summer update to play back ups.
