HOW THE **** DO THEY EXPECT THIS TO COMPETE WITH THE IPHONE AND DS???

NO USB: Silly feature loss removing the memory card to install stuff isn't going to go down well especially with PS3 gamers with a card slot.
NO MS SLOT: It has a Memory Stick Micro slot, 16gb onboard is enough for me let alone my 4gb stick.
NO 2nd Analog stick: Why would they do that on this revision making psp games with two different control schemes will hurt psp development even more and its not going to work with older games.
NO phone features: If you want a phone buy a phone, unless you want to sidetalk the hardware is still too large.
NO touchscreen: Who likes touchscreens anyway? Same as the second stick useless in games unless you leave the userbase out.
NO camera: How many cameras do you need, just get a phone or a camera :D

As for competing with the iphone the new sony phone will do that, it has a touchscreen a good camera and an incoming app store and probably a high enough price. As for the DS there's no competing, its way ahead and most people have one but has a lot of shovelware.

What i don't like is that there's announced way to bring UMD games to this unit and it will arrive in the fall of this year when id expect sony to ditch the PSP and give everyone what they want something new infact and the way it looks like the new unit will be hard to balance and the nub is in the middle.

What i do like is the bluetooth tethering headphones 3g online gaming, they have also promised a new MGS, Gran Turismo (yeah GT) LBP and jak and daxter.

No USB: It's no longer needed, it has bluetooth dumbass. You can connect the PSP to the computer using bluetooth. You can connect it to the PS3 with bluetooth, you can also connect headphones and mics through bluetooth. It all depends on how they set it up. You know they have to have a way to get it connect to the PC to put your pictures, movies, and music on it.
NO MS SLOT: It has a Memory Stick Micro slot. How much more do you need.
NO 2nd Analog stick: I agree they should have put this one in there.
NO phone features: If it did it would be called an Sony Ericsson PSP since they are the ones in charge of Sony's phone division and they refuse to pull games to the phone.
NO touchscreen: Would love to have seen this but you know Sony, they don't conform.
NO camera: **** a camera but they could have added it... eh?

If they added a second stick or a touch screen it'd be a new system and not a redesign. I'll get one if it's possible to run homebrew and ISO's, that way I can rip all my UMD's using my 1002 and play them on the Go!.

Well, I agree to this.
We need 2nd analog stick and L2, R2 buttons to play all playstation games.
I think we also need touch screen so we don't have to slide down all the buttons to control the video and the music.

Yes, and No... While new games can take advantage of new features.. its not like old games need to stop working... they're not removing anything.. but adding

well the 1000 had an IR port, but it never ever did anything ever.. Knowing Sony, the bluetooth is for headsets only.. You won't be able to tether, or do file transfers, or anything actually useful.

NO MS SLOT: It has a Memory Stick Micro slot. How much more do you need.

NO USB, because that way people can not copy files that could hack the Go!
NO UMD, because Sony got burned that way also.
Built in 16GB memory only for PSN and save storage.
Bluetooth, only for headsets and copying save games from the Ps3 to the Go!
Memory Stick Micro is only for music or non Tiff images.

A start to make the Go un-hackable is do not allow people to access the system. Do not allow the storage of any PBP's, PRX's, tiff's etc.

Yes, and No... While new games can take advantage of new features.. its not like old games need to stop working... they're not removing anything.. but adding

Add too much and you start getting "PSP-Go only" games. You can only upgrade so much when you want every game to run on every PSP out there. Adding extra buttons, controls and a touchscreen is making a different console. It'd be a pain in the neck.

Knowing Sony, the bluetooth is for headsets only.. You won't be able to tether, or do file transfers, or anything actually useful.

Wireless communications with the PS3 will be nice, and should be easier to set up than wifi (pair + type in code = done). I honestly don't know what the bluetooth connectivity will be like, but disabling bluetooth pairing & data transfer to/from non-PS3 devices would be a hard sell. These days if it's not got wireless comms, it's not portable. And portability is what the PSP is all about.

Removing a memory stick micro is a risky business too. One slip and the damn thing vanishes into the pile of the carpet, only to be found when you feel something go *snap* underfoot or disintegrate in the hoover. I really doubt they'll make physical removal of the memory stick the only method for file transfers to anything other than a PS3. Sony sell PCs as well ;)

Removing USB connectivity is annoying. It's probably a cost-cutting measure above anything else. Sure USB probably allows stabler and deeper access to the consoles but look at the hacks & custom firmware installers for the PSP. They just run straight from the memory stick. I don't see how preventing data transfer over Bluetooth would help them at all, without removing MS access as well.

>It seems the PSP Go! will cost $250 (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/sony-bringing-psp-go-october-1-for-249-in-north-america/)<

I think Sony might have a big flop to deal with.

Pay $250 for the Go!
Re-pay for PSN downloads of the games you have and like.
Pay for a new memory card. (If more then 16GB is needed)

theBrave
06-03-2009, 05:33 AM
And it uses the M2 memory card format that Sony Ericson said ( http://tr.im/ngql ) they will avoid using in the future (and switch to µSD/TF) due to its lack of success and appearing as a burden to consumers.

But the PSP Go can be used as a clock !

I'll probably go buy one... ONLY because I've read that it's not totally awful, I could stand a smaller/brighter screen, and seeing as how I'v enever used a UMD in 5 years I could go for a smaller unit..

otherwise.. I'm thinking Sony could have done a better job with it

That's not the problem, the bluetooth chip of the PSP Go won't connect to any computer or phone. That's a design decision. That's not like you could use bluetooth to access internet or sync media files or anything else: it's for gamepad and headphones only.

As much fun as this has been to read you guys really need to look at the specs some time (zeus posted them in the new and information part of the fourm)

See the bolded areas below which will tell you that it does have a USB port so connecting to a computer is easy and if nothing else if you can connect to it it can be hacked at some point look at the 3K as the best example.

I would have preferred clam shell over slide though, just for protection really.

I think Sony may have missed the boat with the other features though.. maybe if this was released instead of the 3000 it would have done alot better.

Personally I think they should have upgraded everything (cpu, etc), given it a second analogue, called it a PSP2 & let this old thing die

As the PSP didn't evolve since 2004, all the functionality are now shortcomings:
- the media player is shitty (doesn't support DivX, Xvid, MKV, subs, HD content) compared to all those sub-$100 PMP from china.
- the music player doesn't support sorting by artist/album/genre, we're in 2001 or what ?
- web navigator: we're in 2009 and you don't support ajax ?

And don't let me start about the PSN store: I bought FF7 last week and was still unable to complete the download.

WOW the more I look at that PSP Go the more I want it, mainly the built in 16Gb and the Bluetooth but it looks a hell of alot better than the rubbish 3K, all they did was add on a micrphone which I can't think of a reason outside of homebrew that thats good for, I love the look of the new PSP Go it's unique and I don't care what your all saying except for (so waht you'll have to buy new stuff for it, so what it hasn't got a umd drive [I took my previous PSP's apart to take out the UMD drive I never use them.] that's my opinion sorry it was so long lol)
