Here is a perfect example of contrasting gamer tastes across the continents, Ridge Racer for the Xbox 360 was the best selling title in Japan, yet the worst in North America. Call of Dity was the best selling title in North America, yet the worst in Japan. Looks like it's going to be a hard slug for Microsoft, pending Japanese developer suppport.

Namco’s Ridge Racer 6 is the lowest selling Xbox 360 game in America selling only 9,091 units. By comparison the highest selling title, Call of Duty 2, has sold 250,730. Things couldn’t be more different in Japan. While Microsoft’s white box is about as elusive as a certain white whale in the US, they are readily available in Japan. Ridge Racer 6 is also the highest selling game title in Japan selling 29,891 units. Call of Duty 2 isn’t even in the top 3.

This only reiterates how difficult it will be for Microsoft to succeed in the Japanese market. While they have made great inroads in America, establishing themselves as a serious threat to Sony’s console hegemony, they have been unable to duplicate a fraction of that success in Japan.

How can they say call of duty 2 was the worst selling game in Japan? It's not even out yet!

Somebody doesn't know what they're talking about...

WELL THERE'S A SHOCKER!!!!

ridge racer outsells call of duty 2 in japan.

i couldn't begin to imagine why the japanese gamers wouldn't want to harken back to the days of good ol world war 2, where the sights of mushroom clouds and the smell of burning bodies proliferated the senses of their grandmothers and grandfathers...

Actually alot of Japanese people are ashamed of their role in WW2 (as we all should be no country is clean in that regard everyone did things they regret now) so no I think they would actually be offended by playing through their past actions and many other east asian countries would be offended too (see recent Japanese school text book argument with China and China's anti Japan protests etc).

Plus this is more a case of massivley opposing cultures. Having been to Japan and seen their tastes and lifestyle in person its quite easy to see why they would prefer the old school fun arcade games :)

hi, i hav both of these games an i gotta say they are totally different genres, i like them both as they are equally enjoyable but it is easy to see why some countries might prefer different games.

i dont think the chinese will dislike call of duty because it will remind them of WW2...after all it is just a game, and all thats over with now so people shouldnt be put off if its a good game(which it is) the thing i dont understand is the lack of ridge racer sales in the u.s, i mean its a beast of a game. i think this all comes down to different tastes, nothing else.

I meant purely if you were to play as japanese doing the actions they did over the wartime period then they would be a large upcry. Not the current game which is not as offensive (unless you are a nazi then oh well)
