We got a word from a tipster (who frequently tips off Chinese trade paper Digitimes), that Nintendo will be refreshing Wii internal hardware this summer, with 65nm versions of both its CPU and graphics chips, while clock rates would stay the same.

Currently, the IBM PowerPC based CPU is made on a 90nm process and the ATI “Hollywood” GPU is likewise 90nm. Both companies have been making 65nm chips for over a year, while ATI also has 55nm working technology as well.

Furthermore, thanks to the new chips, the Wii is said to be “passively-cooled”, meaning it won’t require any fans.

does that mean we are going to get a mini-wii? heck, much smaller and you'd loose it down the sofa ;)

yes it does.
fist: less noise = a good thing period.

second: no fans = no smoke(if you are a smoker like me and my most of my friends) get sucked thru the slot in drive = less problems with the lence ( im on my second drive 'cause you can't clean the lence forever...)

they should add a rigid hard drive too, at least 4gb...

rigid? all hard drives are made of palettes made of metal...

Wow, no fans = major epic fail. Hope nintendo's ready to dish out a billion bucks like MS did for the rrod.

I see the fan less console as a good idea as the wii fan can be nearly as bad for noise as the 360 one from very little play.

And for the sceptics it was quoted in an article in 2007 that I read that the ps3 could also loose the internal fan by the end of its lifecyle according to 2 engineers who worked on it so can easily see a fanless wii with last gen technology being a reality soon.

So a slimmer smaller Wii? HDMI port? HD support? No? Then it's not news worth reporting. :p

um ... how warm do you think the thing even gets now? graphics are not the strong point and the smaller chips run cooler....

it isnt a 'fail' (which btw is the stupidest fucking internet cliche to be created) .... its business practice.

for some unknown reason people still buy wii's, these smaller chips will make manufacturing cheaper and with the price staying the same it will print more money than ever.

My Wii is kinda going retarded. Getting an updated one might be in my best interest.

..and I'm sure these "changed" Wii's will mysteriously be unhackable and Twilight hack useless. -_-

typical..

I doubt that happening and most important, the DVD Drive still would make noise which infact, is the biggest noisemaker on todays consoles.

of course because no previous console could exist without fans could it?

it wont cost them millions of bucks because nintendo know how to make hardware that works.

I've heard of wiis already overheating with their current build on the market. Granted its nowhere near rrod levels, but it's happened with fans already. Hopefully the 65nm process will work out and that nintendo is right, but its a gamble, I'd be gun shy about risking it if it was me.

Well considering the power of the Wii is not more than the budget rangeprocessors you can get from Ati and Nvidia, and those don't have fans on them so it should be fine.

So Nintendo finally move to 65nm technology, the last one to do so, and the easiest to impliment the process for.

Oh well hopefully this means price cut, but somehow I oubt it, there are still too many idiots with more money than braincells out there so basically more money for Nintendo for each console sold.

Must be jsut a revision to ban hackes,a nd chips... the no fans is jsut a bonus...:o

They have waited so long to do this that they may as well go 45nm. To my knowledge that will give them 4 times as many chips per wafer and make them barely require a heatsink, let alone fan. Most chip manufacturers test the smaller processes with their weaker chips, what weaker mass production chips are there than those in the Wii?

The whole thing will likely mean massive savings for Nintendo on what is already far and away the most profitable console. What does the UK get for so many years of devoted Nintendo support, a £20 price increase

I think the £ devaluation is the problem here, I dont see places using € got any problem... yet!

Are you serious? If this is real do you really think Nintendo would not to endless testing to make sure that it wouldn't cause problems down the road? They have absolutely no reason to rush anything out, unlike MS did originally with the 360. Nintendo is basically the defintion of hardware quality control.

i dont think a fanless system would happen, even though the chips are smaller and lower temperature, they still create heat and with so little space in the wii, it would still need some sort of airflow, if however they could use air from the dvd drive, that could possible work. I dont think its worth the risk, the fan must cost virtually nothing to produce and doesnt add any noticable running noise.
