View Full Version : PS3 HDD decryption tutorial
We've been informed of a new tutorial on how you can decrypt the retail PS3 HDD, apparently this provides a great way to study and analyse data on the PS3 HDD. All the details are available at Haxnetwork.net.

Uhm Where is the utility?.

1.) Make a dump of your PS3 HDD (connect to your PC via SATA)
2.) Plug HDD back to your PS3
3. Copy a large-dummy file to the HDD
4.) Unplug HDD from PS3, and plug it back into your PC
5.) Dump the HDD image again
6.) Compare the two dumps you know have, and locate the encrypted dummy data (use HxD or any hex editor to do this)
7.) Replace the encrypted dummy data with sections of the data you want to decrypt
8.) Place the HDD back into your PS3
9.) Copy dummy data from PS3 to external media (USB drive/flash drive)
10.) Inspect the dummy file on PC from USB stick/flash drive.
get Hxd from here (http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/)
Anyone tried it yet?

Retail PS3 HDD decryption exposed as a FAKE
http://ps3.qj.net/Retail-PS3-HDD-decryption-exposed-as-a-FAKE/pg/49/aid/129175
tut your four days behind everyone else :p
While some sites were quick to falsely label the recent discovery of HDD discovery “fake”, a tutorial is now available on how to decrypt your own Playstation 3 HDD (yes retail). Just to shed some light on the confusion that has been spread around the scene of this “discovery”; This method was discovered a while ago but was never released publicly. knightsolidus stumbled upon this during his research and brought it to the public’s attention.

It ain't fake but is pretty useless (unless something else happens) the files are still encrypted just now one layer has been broken on the HDD

hey mr know it all i read that crap 4 days ago aswell
its fooking fake (involving swapping blocks of known encrypted data for unknown),
fook all has been decrypted which makes it fake
read this all of it especially the bit about clueless masses
which includes you
and when you have read this go here and read my post

its about as good as your Sources tutorial

THE FACTS BEHIND THE FAKE PS3 HDD decryption
The PS3 HDD getting decrypted is starting to become quite the joke of the week for anyone not blind in both eyes.
At first, it seemed like there was some truth to it and many of us were quite excited, as the files looked legitimate.
The files were infact, real. Unknown to many (including NDT) at the time, they were just from the PS3's flash filesystem that was accessible with a PS3 TEST.
As we dug deeper, we found out that it was all a web of lies, and what little research was done was stolen from knightsolidus by DemonHades.
Uninformed sites are posting a "decryption" How-to Guide that is nothing but a false proof positive. Said method (involving swapping blocks of known encrypted data for unknown), was used by many of our DEVS including NDT and ggparallel months ago with no success.
So far, every file that was released has been taken from a dump of a Debug firmware, and posted (without permission) in attempt to be played off as something from the PS3's hard disk drive. Why bother.. for attention?!
Now, if this was any true decryption there would be information about the crypto algos, the key lengths, among other things present - but are there? Nope! And there won't be, because this method will not lead to those at all.
The "method" is simply being used as a stopgap to try to soothe the clueless masses after those involved were called out on said crypto algos (for being wrong) and the keys being missing.
Rest assured, if the PS3 HDD is ever actually decrypted you will hear about it first right here!

Your source is from ps3news which is known for bull ****. ps3news is the reason it was called fake in the first place.
Your right in a way no files have been decrypted all the information is still encrypted and this method does not change that, all it does is remove the HDD layer encryption but all the files are still encrypted so it is useless (for now) yes but fake no.
As far as I am aware nothing was stolen from knightsolidus, he is still posting on www.demonhades.org and on haxnetwork about this I will ask him if he is online later.
I won't rise to your name calling bait it gets no where and i'm above idiotic name calling.

Well lets just argree to disargree I have no intention of aruging with you if you want to beleive what you have read fine, i'll beleive what I have been told by people who know what there talking about.
Like I said I'm not going to argue and this will be my last message on the subject, I have no reason to convince anyone if its real or fake and unlike most people on boards i'm not going to force my opinion down peoples throats i like to think i'm more mature then the usual forum user.

thannks AJ :)
Your welcome. Here is some more info from someone else who as tried it
I've managed to decrypt start blocks (86016bytes - 0-4 first data blocks, just for test) of my hard drive with this method. I can confirm, this is working solution, thanx to DemonHades.
I have wrote some simple utility to find differences in two hard drive images, and get some statistics to text file - this greatly simplifies finding destination offset for data to decrypt.
Main problem there is, that ps3 splits dummy file to many chunks on filesystem (3Gb of dummy file my system have split into ~67Mb chunks), so you can't decrypt all data at once, only chunks, you are interested in - it would take a lot of time to decrypt full partition.

I usually would NEVER want to be the "I told you so" guy but bobit came across as idiotic and this is to funny not to hear so now I just HAVE to post this.
SO when this all came out ps3news.com jumped on it calling it fake and people like bobit beleived it was fake despite the proof (because he probably doesn't know anything about the ps3 he just talks ****)
Now that people are starting to see its real what does ps3news do? DO they stick to their guns and says it fake? do they ignore it and hope people will forget?
NOPE they say they knew it was real all along but pretended it was fake so people would'nt post about it on the internet thus alerting sony to its existence
LMFAO what a bunch of idiots! I'm sure now bobit will say he knew it was real too lol.
Seriously some people are stupid I think this will finally prove what a bunch of fakers the guys at ps3news.com are

Keep telling yourself that. I don't know why you can't see its real, real or fake it won't lead to anything so its pointless arguing but watching you defend it like the holy grail is funny. Oh and just because i'm in manchester doesn't mean i'm form there i'm not a northerner:p suppose you will argue that i am now just to give you some extra posts and something else to moan about.
Oh and stop the insults or i'll get your account banned.
