View Full Version : KillZone 2 dev: We have pushed the PS3 hard

A Killzone 2 developer has commented that Killzone 2 pushes the PS3 hardware very hard, and that the game itself has also surpassed the vision that the team had in some places. They also denied reports that the PS3 is more difficult to develop for than other consoles.

Mr Hulst insists that the game has surpassed that vision in some places.

"We've delivered in most areas on the vision we set out. We have pushed the machine hard. The vision was about the graphical fidelity we were creating, and the other thing was the intensity and chaos around the player - there's plenty of that in that game."

The game certainly stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the most graphically rich titles released on any gaming platform. It also boasts 7.1 surround sound, making the most of its atmospheric audio design.

He adds: "If you analyse down to the nitty gritty, there are some areas to improve.

"But in some areas we have pushed it further; the weapons look better in game than they do in the target trailer, for example."

Guerrilla has had the PlayStation 3 hardware longer than most and claims, contrary to popular belief, that the machine is not harder or more difficult to develop on than other consoles.

Killzone 2 is set in the future and pits humans against the Helghast

"I'm surprised by how much room our technology producers have squeezed out of it. We were reviewing some levels and thought that 40 or maybe 50 dynamic lighting elements were possible in one particular level at a time.

They've developed 4 modern games inc KZ2 since 2004 and got bought out in december 05 they likely never even touched another modern devkit, how can you say its not more difficult to develop for when you've not tried the other devkits for the same generation?

I've yet to try the KZ2 demo but will once i finish watching from hell. Can anyone tell me if it has full kb/mouse support?

Well, not like they spent long developing it eh? Like GT5 - FFS, release it already; are they competing with Duke Nukem For(N)ever for the prize for the-longest-hype-of-what-is-actually-going-to-turn-out-to-be-a-sh1t-game?

i've only played the k2 demo and didn't see anything on offer i hadn't seen done better before.

that being said, i usually avoid playing fps games on console and stick to the pc for them. maybe that's the reason.

just tried the demo, don't like the blur when i move the right stick, was expecting higher graphic quality too. keyboard and mouse doesn't work!
other than those minor points i liked it, if they enabled kb/mouse support in the final version i'll buy it, if not i won't touch it :D

Wow, a Sony owned developer says the PS3 is easy to develop for, crazy. What's next, the Gran Turismo guys saying the same thing?

Development is development. The easiest is whatever you happen to be best at. Computer language fluency is similar to spoken language fluency. I bet if you're Finnish, Finnish is easy. To the rest of the world, it's one of the most difficult languages to learn--but even then, that's not because it's intrinsically more difficult; it's only because it's so different from other languages, which are all more similar to one another. Most languages have common roots...like Latin, Greek, or Chinese. Finnish is its own thing.

Of course, that might be beg the question: Well then isn't it better to make things similar, so that they're easier to pick up?

I'd say there are pros and cons to that. Keep things similar, and you will speed up adoption. But when you do things from the ground up, that's when you have the chance to make some real strides and innovations. The Wii "kept things similar" and it's probably by far the easiest console to develop for.. The cost of that is that it's barely different from its predecessor at all.

My coworker thinks it's easier to develop web apps in Cocoon/XSL/XSLT.. I think it's easier to use Ruby/Rails/Perl.. Are either of us wrong? No. If I had to do a Cocoon app, I'd stare at the wall for hours trying to learn it. If he had to do Ruby/Perl, he'd be in the same predicament. Easy is subjective.

Um, right. I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or not. But I think we're saying the same thing.

Of course a Sony owned dev team is going to say the PS3 platform is easy to develop on, because like you said they have nothing to compare it too. But basically every other team that does multi-platform development has said the PS3 takes a lot more work to produce the same results. Because Sony felt the need to buck the normal trend.

Sony does this all the time, and have been ridiculed over it for many years (Beta, Mini-disc, Memory Stick). Even if their way is technically better or more powerful the one that's easier or more popular has been the better choice. Blu-Ray aside, but Sony dodged that bullet by throwing an obscene amount of money at it.

Please nobody take this as me being anti-Sony or anti-PS3. I own a PS3 with many BR movies. And I have no problem with Sony TV's (aside from their unwarranted price increase compared to the equal Samsung set ;)).

Well you didn't seem to understand the pros of going in a different direction as he explained them. If everyone just follows the same path there's less room from growth, or at least growth won't be as drastic. Now the wii again shows us that while technologically it might not be as innovative, the way in which the technology is applied, according to many, is innovative. Anyways, even those multiplatform devs that you mentioned are usually partial to the "easy" platform because that's what they know, or it's what's most similar to what they know, so again, as sigma tried to say it's easier because it's what they know.

Well I guess for all intents and purposes the ps3 is really more difficult to develop for just based on the majority of opinions, that's really the democratic way of looking at it, but if you really think about it, only an up and coming dev that hasn't constantly been working with the same platform for years is the one most suited to say what's easier or not since they probably have the least bias (well that would be ideally, being that they are basically tied to sony they do have a bias).

Anways, to sum up what I think about this "You can't teach an old dog new tricks"

If you're using a USA PS3.

Simply create a new PSN account, set the region to UK. Then you can download Killzone 2 demo, even though you have a USA PS3.

I did this weeks ago. It works.

For as 360 owner Gears 2 does look damn good. But you can't denied K2 looks amazing. They are not using the same engine and environment doesn't works the same, so you can't expect everything to look good. Sure some textures on K2 might not look the same as the rest of the game. But damn they sure have covered that with some fine looking game and with amazing sound effects.
I will sure play this game so hard when my brother pick it up. To bad I was hoping using 360 controller instead of Ps3. Don't get me wrong. Ps3 d-pad is outstanding but when it come to FPS I prefer 360 pad. Anyway looking forward to this game! HELL YEA!

I was not one of them but this game did not impress me at all. The demo was ok at best. The sound was great but the rest was not even close to what i had hoped for. It does not look anything like the prerecord video at the end of the demo. I hope the full game looks and plays better then the demo does. And it has to load over and over the full game better not do that crap. Just in that 5min demo it loaded 4x. I have seen games 2 years ago for PC look 10x better then this.

Hell my movies freezes all the time and shuts off for no reason this is my 3ed PS3. I am about 2 sec from selling and getting 2 bluray players in its place. I am so sick of sonys crap. PS Killzone2 demo killed my HDD i had to reformat it. I would DL the demo then install. And it would not show up on the list of games. The demo pretty much is the trailer except its cut and it doesn't look as good as the video even with the recolor. 720p 30fps and motion blur is nothing to brag about, its good but hardly next gen ownage.
That said i like it and want it and think its about 50% as good as the two years hype made out (thats a whole 40% higher than halo 3 btw) but unless they embrace keyboard/mouse support its near unplayable for me even with deadzone adjustments.

I still don't get why devs aren't doing this. Personally, I like my gamepads, but I'm not an avid FPS player.... Ok I basically hate the genre, but it seems that anyone (or the vast majority at least) that likes the genre prefers kb/ms over a gamepad, so what's the deal? the ps3 (and 360 right?) recognizes mice as input devices, so are they just being stubborn, or is there some technological hurdle that I'm not aware of here?

I played the demo and didn't think it was anything special. I can tell its a quality game but I just can't get into it. I thought Crysis Warhead was a better FPS. The controls feel like they're lagging and sluggish, making the game feel slow to me. I'm kinda on the fence with this one.

usually it tends to be the case to help equality. If somebody with a KB and mouse goes up against somebody using a Pad there will be a disadvantage however in KZ2 it may be because of SIXAXIS support for things like the sniper rifle where a steady hand means a steady sight. That clearly will not be possible or supported with a mouse and keyboard. I don't know what the problem is though it's not like many FPS support KB/M on consoles with the exception of UT3 on the PS3.

Well I don't agree with the unfair advantage part, if you (not directed at you just in case) don't want to suck then you better do what you can to make your chances better. I would use a gamepad, but if I'm getting my ass handed to me constantly then I would use kb/m if I thought that might help me. They could maybe make it so that kb/m and gamepad players can choose if they want to play against each other if it really bothers people that much.

That motion sensing bit with the sniper rifle sounds cool, nice implementation of motion sensing if you ask me. While not many consoles FPS support kb/mouse that should change already, the consoles that we have now are capable of doing it, and it surely is a step forward any way you look at it.

hard does not equal max, and not everyone is a graphics whore, or need I point you to the wii and 'til just recently the ps2? I rather play an old school SNES game than a lot of these new shinny and pretty games. Whoever is worried so much about graphics should just stick to PC gaming, in my opinion this would be better for them.

I agree and at the same time disagree with you. I'd rather use a KB/M for FPS's but if I played with a pad and got my ass handed to me I would not go out and buy peripherals, though I already have a KB/M some don't and it would put them off the game rather than make them want to go out and buy the gear to level the playing field. At the end of the day a level playing field is what matters most. surely the pad is not hard to hold it's just the precision with which the reticule moves and if everybody else has to use a pad then I see nothing wrong with it since I know that anybody else who gets a headshot had to put the same effort in as me.

say an athlete says "I think everybody should be able to dope so that we can all get faster times" I would say "what's the point?" all they have done is made it easier for everyone, yet harder for everybody to compete because now some may not be able to afford steroids.

what I can agree with though is perhaps the option but again you are dividing the online community which is a very bad thing when it comes to matchmaking as a whole.

So while a dev can support KB/M to make it easier for users to get headshots you have to live with these disadvantages which IMO make it not worth the trouble for new IP.

Well as you already know I'm not the most avid FPS player out there, so I don't really notice the big difference between kb/m and gamepads.... well aside from my hands cramping up when I play a few minutes using the keyboard. I really have no idea how people with big hands can handle playing on kb, in all honesty I have chick sized hands and it's a pain in the as... err hands.

That said I wouldn't exactly compare kb/m to steroids; most avid FPS fans are, or at some point were, PC gamers and I doubt anyone on the PC would use a gamepad over the combo, so it's not like they are doing anything wrong by wanting to play as they are used to. The way I see it anyone who is truly serious about playing FPS will have their kb/m, or wouldn't mind getting them (if only they knew that their consoles would support them) in order to play the best they can.

Well as you already know I'm not the most avid FPS player out there, so I don't really notice the big difference between kb/m and gamepads.... well aside from my hands cramping up when I play a few minutes using the keyboard. I really have no idea how people with big hands can handle playing on kb, in all honesty I have chick sized hands and it's a pain in the as... err hands.

Very good point about the "what they are used to" which was why I mentioned new IP and is IMO the sole reason UT3 (PS3) supports it. However avid FPS fans (I assume most of them) will not use a pad over a KB/M simply because of the precision of the mouse which makes it easier to get headshots and for consoles it will just be another thing you would need to buy to compete (hence the comparison) it tends not to be because the KB/M is more comfortable; after all a Pad was designed to be exactly that, more comfortable than a KB/M. So the main use of KB/M is to make the game easier over Pads. Anyway, each to their own I guess but I know that in my case if a console game supported KB/M online it would put me off the game not make me want to buy or hook my KB/M up just to compete.

Jeez, you're an arrogant little tw@t!

And you offered nothing to the thread but to attack someone in both posts, one of which was trying to help with tech trouble, whos the arrogant twa@t now :D Go try it on kotaku, or on the street face to face enjoy your beating. BTW google images is full of non-source images and bull shots maybe you should stop being so blind arrogant and compare the real thing but im sure you have your head so far up a corps (that cares for money not the gamers) ass your eyes will lie too.

Its all about an opinion of fairness, yet when you speak to most gamers on official sites and make a thread such as "don't allow kb/mouse please" most people will stand up and say that some gamers are awesome on controllers some are awesome on kb/mouse and it doesn't matter about the differences. Its about time they closed the gap at least the DC had an official keyboard and mouse which worked with UT.
You would think ms and sony would be desperate to take away more of the pc market and sell extra overpriced items that they can lock to only their own brand or licensing system.

You mean my fully shielded speakers, center and side channels. With a about 1 feet of space on the side and 2 feet in the back to the wall. And my Directv, wii, PS3, 360 and receiver are all open top and back to keep vary cool. I do not see why you mean?
Indeed, i was just trying to find an answer for your technical issues, trying to be helpful at least, you did your research on the speakers while i do not even know which brand so i assumed they're being blasted with static or crapping out from a magnetic field, i once saw a pc mod where a guy placed a speaker and a static ball inside his pc case and killed his setup despite warning from the community, also i wasn't aware of how much room was behind the setup it could of been right against the wall starving the consoles of fresh air for all i knew.

Actually Sony are all for standard USB KB/M support leaving it up to the developer to decide as is evident in the fact that UT3 on the PS3 has it. KZ2 does not since it uses sixaxis as an integral part of gameplay but for other games you would have to ask the devs why they don't support it and I suspect you will get an answer about fairness and needing peripherals as you rightfully presumed.
