PRESS RELEASE: amBX ANNOUNCES TOOLS AND MIDDLEWARE LICENSE FOR PLAYSTATION®3

Redhill, UK – amBX today announced that it has concluded a Tools & Middleware License agreement for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) with Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI).

<center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/ambxxx.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/ambxxx1.jpg"></center></a>

Originally conceived and developed for the PC by a UK team within Philips Research, amBX is a technology that delivers real-world sensory experiences - using light, colour, rumble and even air flow - through licensed amBX peripherals, to the virtual worlds of video games, music, movies, Internet and TV entertainment. The Tools & Middleware License agreement with SCEI will allow amBX to develop its ambient experiences technology beyond the PC market and into the worldwide game market.

“This is a major milestone in the development of amBX as a ubiquitous standard for entertainment sensory experiences,” commented Jo Cooke, Chief Marketing Officer, amBX. “amBX has already proved incredibly popular and successful within the PC games, music, movies and apps markets and the Tools & Middleware License agreement with SCEI will allow us to bring amazing light, rumble, sound and air movement experiences to game users.”

amBX has already licensed the technology to many content developers and publishers in the gaming sector and the amBX developer program has recently launched a new, free SDK to allow many more hardware and entertainment developers to add this innovative technology to their products. A support forum also provides advice and best practice information as well as a complete toolbox that will unlock the most advanced features of amBX at www.ambx.com.

I remember when this stuff launched for the PC. Apart from grabbing peoples attention in demo's why would anybody want this?

It's just like the dumb Ambilight that Philips thinks everybody should have on their TV's. It's neat to see it in the store, right after you hang your TV on the wall, or to show your buddy 'look what my tv can do'. But for actual movie watching it gets shut off.

I like how on their site it says "The very first amBX hardware devices are from Philips Peripherals & Accessories. Other amBX hardware manufacturers are soon to follow". This stuff launched like 2 years ago, odd that nobody else cares about it besides Philips.

And how is this supposed to work in the console (living room) enviroment? It made a little sense on the PC because of the close quaters on the desk. Where are you supposed to sit the fans/lights in your living room? Just what I want to do before I play a console game is to set out my 'traffic cone' lights all over my room. Dumb.

I have to completely disagree with that, it never gets switched off on mine.. Ambilight does make watching tv/films easier on the eye and it actually reduces eye strain. No additional lighting needed in the room so no glare from a table lamp on the screen.

Its a very cool concept, but i think it will wear off fast and just collect dust.

Well bud, I have to assume that you're in the minority here. While I was installing home theaters I would show people the Ambilight feature, they would all go, "ooo, that's cool". Then they would say, "it's kind of annoying though, how do we shut it off?".

I fully understand the effect that dim lighting can have on your eyes to reduce strain. But I can accomplish that with a side lamp if needed. I really don't want my room lighting to be constantly changing colors, it's a distraction to me.

That being said, I'm glad you enjoy it. That's all that matters. At least now I can tell people that I know of one person who likes it. ;)

It looks very good, but how about gameplay?

Uncharted 1 was an okay platform shooter, and i do actually think U 2 will surpass the first one. I might even buy it 1st day..depending on reviews.
