Punchjump report Nintendo DS retail sales are at six million units in the U.S. and Japan compared to Sony's PSP at 4.26 million.

Nintendo recently spoke to media outlets at the UBS Global Media Conference to discuss company strategy for the console and handheld market.

The pup simulator Nintendogs has sold 950,000 units in the U.S. and carries twice the female purchase rate than traditional software.

Nintendo currently owns 72% of the handheld market, with Game Boy Advance at 41%, Nintendo DS at 31%, and PSP at 28%.

Nintendo DS sales began to surge in Japan months ago on sales of untraditional games like Nintendogs and Brain Training for Adults. The hardware continues to outsell all other consoles in that region.

Nintendo dropped its new online game service, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, in conjunction with online games Mario Kart DS and Activision's Tony Hawk's American Sk8land on Nov. 15. Players can log on via a wireless home network, at hotspot locations, and at any local McDonald's restaurant.

In three weeks, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection has logged almost three million connections worldwide and nearly 200,000 unique visitors on Mario Kart DS.

Well of course the Nintendo DS is in the lead because it came out sooner than the PSP. Same thing with the XBOX 360. It's going to be in the lead over the PS3, For how long.... Dont know. For sure the Nintendo Revolution is not going to be near the XBOX 360 and PS3 sells.

Err I don't think so, it's because of the great games that have took advantage of DS capabilities. Releasing console first doesn't always mean uber sales.

Sorry, but that's not exactly right. The DS has been outselling the PSP for the last few months in North America, Europe and Japan. DS sucked when it first came out. It's doing well now because it finally has good games. PSP might want to put out some good games too. I'm not going to spend $250 USD for a handheld when there is only 2 games on it I want to play.

There isnt a competition between the two. I own a PSP from its release and have enjoyed the thing. Granted there are few good games but those that are good Kick ass.

Recently I baught a DS as the machines unique features are being more utalised (sonick Rush) Pac man game thing) (mario and L... partners in time etc are great examples of a few.

I love and respect them both. Burnout on the DS is a joke, but on the psp is great. However, mario, and other nintendo established games are sick, and play great. Of corse I prefer the eye candy of the PSP, but Nintendo is showing that it knows the market.

I don't agree with you on that... If Sony can't compete there won't be another PSP.

I purchased my DS when Castlevania was coming out. That was a game I had to play. I have two friends that bought their DS for the same game. Now I own a number of DS games such as Mario 64, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing.... What I'm trying to say is that PSP needs more games that a worth buying the system for. I'm not going to spend money on a system that plays console ports. When or 'IF' the PSP gets those games I'll be in line at the store to get the game and a PSP.

Please no Burnout DS bashing... I can bash plenty of PSP games too.

To be honest when the DS and the PSP were announced I laughed at both of them. I couldn't understand the two screen, touch screen idea. And the idea of a spending a fortune the portable PSP so that I could buy my movies a second time to play them on it didn't and still doesn't sound like a good way to spend my money. Nintendo has shown that they know the market. But not just that, they have shown that they can bring new customers into the market with DS.

the psp is sonys first handheld and what a device it is. They have not just thrown everything at it and hoped for the best. I mean a simple psone handheld would have been good enough but this has future developmental capabilities ans its possiblilities are just being touched.

At the same time the DS is now demonstrating the dual screen possibilities with games like trace memories, pac n roll, touch and go, touch golfM&L prtners, sonic ruch and I am out of breath for the list is almost exaustive. I am eagaly awaiting the Resident Evil release (assuming its up to the usual Nintendo quality).

They is room for two consoles great in their own right. I guess alot of people own both. However because people will continue to compare them, dosnt mean one must and will kill of the other. I choose to celebrate their inginuity :) TWO sick console and not just two similar consoles with similar games as in X-box and PSX :D

I think you meant:
There is room for two great handheld consoles in their own right.

And.. yes, there is room for two great handhelds. The NDS and the GBA. I do see the GBA being taking out of that picture sometime soon. But not by Sony and the PSP, but the Gameboy Advance 2.
