I have been following the hacking scene for the PSP for quite sometime, just popping in to see where it was going. I finally jumped in and got a psp-2001, blue madden with FW 3.95.
From what I know of so far, I can mod this with custom firmware. What I really want to do is just be able to download games from the internet and play them via the memory stick (more the old ones than new).
In the simplest terms, what do I need to do, to make this happen, or is it alot of work just to get the ISO's to run from the memory stick.
Thanks,

Piracy is against Maxconsole rule.
Okay, what if I'm doing a backup of my games?
Custom Firmware is piracy, and you guys have whole threads about those, and using backups (ISO's of the files), just all the mumble jumble doesn't click right now because its new to me.
What I really want to do, is just be able to put custom firmware 5.00 m33-4 on my psp, but do I need a pandora battery or what?

Hi i am not a noob with the psp BUT i am a noob on these kind of Q&A sites, never used em other than to read from , never posted in 5years UP UNTIL NOW!!!!
I know im in the wrong place BUT maybe someone can help...
I want to store all of my media ( mp4 iso's cso's mp3 ) on my apple macs external HDD ( usb2.0 )... and have it all accessible direct from the XMB I have a G4 PPC mac running 10.4.11 TIGER with a slim psp and a phat psp BOTH of which i can pandoraize to ANY supported CFW, so CFW version is irrelevant to this as i can just change it ... i also have a SKY WIFI router ( uk )..
I have already tried the following.....
-----NethostFS gets me an error saying this....
Last login: Fri Dec 26 14:36:59 on ttyp1

PenGUInHOst 0.5 AND 1.02 ( seems to be working but no idea really )
___________________________
on the psp end i have tried Hostcore ( all versions on all CFW's phat and slim )
And IR shell....
IR shell cant find server and is quick about letting me know , its almost an instant error as if it didnt even try connecting
and HostCore freezes as soon as i activate the plugin with note..
I REEEEALLLY want this as i always go to my neighbours to hang out n play games n watch movies but i HATE having to go back home to call my mate back up and list the movies or games i can bring over AND THEN wait for them to copy to the MS.
I WILL DO MOOSE STUFF TO HAVE THE ANSWERS
( also please tell me where i should have posted this... im a forum noob sorry )

ahm an old gamer with a new psp 3000... just wonderin' why i can't modify it into a pandora batt...
then, i've found out it has a protected service mode...
i've learned about the lite blue batt...

Won't matter if it does............There is still no way to put CFW on a PSP-3000 but this does represent a step forward.
There's a whole thread explaining why here

Lol, I knew this would happen right after Christmas. Why not actually play the game you got and invest in another game? Trust me you'll enjoy it a whole lot more.
If your only reason to install custom firmware is to play downloaded ISOs then I hope no one helps you out. It is just completely wrong what you are doing.
Peace \m/
P.S really love your first sentence "I have been following the hacking scene for the PSP for quite sometime, just popping in to see where it was going" made you sound so believable.

Custom Firmware in and of itself is not piracy, nor are emulators.
Step 1 read the forum rules. This site doesn't condone open piracy discussions.
Step 2 DO NOT UPGRADE your official firmware
Step 3 Read the tutorials on this site to find out what you specifically need to do for your PSP. You may need to use a game exploit, I'm not sure (read and find out). Be mindful of the TA Motherboard situation. You may or may not need Pandora (again you've got some reading to do)

I made my console modified by someone with M33 software. It was working fine for a year and so with memory stick.I never used it with UMD. Lately I bought a UMD and I used it with this console. It was working with the UMD game for a couple of times then suddenly the key pads stop working. Even if I use the memory stick games still no success. The screen just hang and not responding to any button. Only the volume buttons are working . I know there is no hardware problem because when I reboot it in recovery window the buttons are working. Help me please.

FW 3.95 means you don't have the TA88v3, you probly have the TA88v2. You definitely don't have an unhackable mobo, because the unhackable mobo's can only run 4.00 FW and above. To mod your PSP, there are some steps that you need to go through in order to put CFW on it, then you need to find a place to get your games from (or just make the ISO of your games yourself, but it can be more of a hassle than just D/l ing ones already made and compressed and such).
I wrote this guide as a response to another forum user that didn't know how to mod his psp, so I'll post it again here. This should explain pretty much everything. Any more questions just post in this forum and I'm sure people will be glad to help ^.^
First things first. One of the best methods to modify a PSP's firmware is to use the 'Pandora Battery' to put your PSP into service mode, then with a special memory card (can prepare a regular MMS to work for this purpose) it will boot the coding that loads the custom firmware.
1. Pandora battery
Pandora is a type of nickname that came along to a battery that could put the PSP into service mode. Essentially, Sony made the PSP so it would boot into service mode if the battery has a serial number of 0xFFFFFFFF. The PSP reads the serial of the battery on bootup, and if it reads the serial as 0xFFFFFFFF, it attempts to boot up from the memory stick, and if it successfully boots from the memory stick, it allows writing onto the internal PSP memory where your XMB (PSP OS) is stored.
There are multiple ways of getting a battery that will boot your PSP into service mode:
I. One method is, of course, buy a Pandora Battery from an online site.
II. Another method is 'softmod' the battery so the Serial is actually 0xFFFFFFFF. This method requires: A. an already modded PSP to do, and a specific model of motherboard that allows writing to the battery OR B. a thing made by Datel that can change the serial of an existing PSP battery, which they call the "Battery Service Tool".
III. Another method is to 'hard mod' your battery. The process is essentially to disable the battery's memory so when the PSP attempts to read from it, all it gets is FFFFFFFF, and therefore goes into service mode. With a PSP Slim battery, you need to open it up, pull the board back (to look at the face of it with all the chips and such), and take a sharp blade (like a razor blade) and cut the trace right next to the #19. Since you have a PSP slim and lite, this should work on your PSP battery (though some battery versions are impervious to the old #19 trick as I found out with one of my PSP's, so if you want to be safe, use options 1 or 2).
2. Magic MMS
A Magic MMS is basically a memory stick with coding on it that your PSP will load on bootup into service mode, and usually these memory sticks have custom firmware that can be installed from them. Making a Magic MMS isn't too difficult. There are some automatic tools for doing this, one of my favorite is Rain's MMS. I don't have 10 posts yet, so it won't let me put it as a clickable link yet, but you can copy and paste this into your browser.
Rain's MMS------- psp-hacks.com/forums/f118/release-rains-simple-mms-maker-v1-0-full-t224166/
Original PSP firmwares (needed for Rain's MMS) ---- psphero.com/download_official.html
Pretty straightforward usage of the program, it's basicly automated, just follow directions and you'll have yourself a Magic Memory Stick.
3. Actual PSP modding.
Now that you have a Pandora Battery and a Magic MMS, let's get this show on the road!!! Pop in the MMS, and afterward, the Service Battery. There should be some activity on the MMS slot light (without you pressing the power button), and if you made the MMS correctly, you should see a menu. Select the option to install your custom firmware, and wait for it to finish, making sure not lose power to your PSP during the process!
When it's done, put in a normal battery (Or fix your Pandorized hardmodded battery into a normal one again by soldering back the #19 trace on the board)
You should see what looks like a normal PSP screen. Go into system settings, and look at System info. If you're PSP has a firmware version that has M33 in it, then it was a success. Now you can run ISO and CSO off the memory stick!
4. CSO/ISO
An ISO is an image of your UMD disk. A CSO is almost no different from an ISO, except that the CSO is compressed to save space. If you get an ISO/CSO from online, you don't have to make one yourself, and it may be better quality than if you did it yourself also, though they take a while to download, so actually making your own might be the way to go if you don't want to wait so long.
DAX UMD Dumper ---- psp-homebrew.eu/hbname.php?id=801
Once you have your ISO of your UMD disk, put it in the folder on your memory card named ISO. This should make it so it shows up on your PSP when you go to Games - Memory Stick. Run it from there and VIOLA. UMD without the disk, and with faster read speeds than 1.1 MB/s (unless you have a REALLY REALLY low quality memory stick.)
P.S. Downloading PSP games from online is NOT piracy if you own the original UMD disks, or have already purchased the game on the Sony online store prior to downloading them from another place. Running games off a memory stick with CFW on your PSP has benefits to it, and as far as I know, is not illegal, unless you don't actually own the game. Some of these benefits are as follows:
1. Faster loading times (UMD disks only load at ~1.1 MB/s, whereas memory sticks load at rates usually ~7MB/s and above!)
2. No need to lug fragile disks around in your pocket, just your PSP.
3. If you somehow forget your sony store info and can't find it, and you have issues with your Mem stick and lose your purchased games, there is a way to get them again - CFW.
Also, CFW allows you to emulate other systems, thus eliminating the need for them to take up space in your living room! I recently put NesterJ on my PSP to emulate my Nes games (and yes - I own the cartridges AND the system, so it's perfectly legal) and now I don't have to wear down my vintage Game console, or let it unnecessarily take up space in my room. It now sits in my closet, in a box, perfectly maintained for future sale to a collector! Not only that, but I can now take my Nes with me on trips! It can very well be used legally, but there are so many people that don't, that it is a common misconception that CFW is thus in and of itself, illegal.

Thank you for not reading into my post too much, and believing I am not in for the pirating, you nailed it on the head that i could make ISO's of my own games which is what I wanted to do.
My only other questions would be.
Can you still access the Playstation Store with CFW?
Can I upgrade my Firmware right now (official) and still be able to change it to CFW in the future (next couple of months).
And if i upgrade to CFW will I lose all my saved data that I have now? ( now thinking its probably stored on the memory stick.)

1-Yes
2-Yes, if you have dc8, a magic memory card and battery
3-No, CFW does not interfere with save files.
Good luck

1: Playstation store is still accessible with CFW. I have CFW and access it for Demos, and haven't had any issues.
2: You can upgrade your firmware to whatever you want, as it doesn't affect the modding process. In modding the PSP the way I explained, you actually gain access to the internal memory and overwrite it with CFW, therefore eliminating any old firmware. Much, much older hacks required that you had an earlier version of firmware as they worked off a different principle. It was essentially exploiting flaws in the already existing firmware so that CFW could be installed. Thus, if new firmwares were installed (where the flaws were patched?) the exploit couldn't be applied anymore. Don't worry, update away ^.^
3: Gamesaves are all on your Memory stick. If you make your memory stick into a Magic Memory Stick with Rain's MMS Maker, it will erase your Mem stick, and any game saves that may be on it. Just make sure that before you erase the stick, you have all your stuff backed up somewhere else.
Happy modding =)
